  1. Little video some friends and I shot a while back of our boozy rendition of the catchiest tune every to blow out an ocarina. Accordion, guitar and washtub-bass. And the version I recorded to submit to OCR, on accordion, autoharp, toy piano and pokemon card on tire spokes. https://soundcloud.com/worldsbestgrandpa/soggy-carousel-song-of-storms Decided to finally sub it today after a year of thumb-twidling. Please enjoy!
  2. I teach English in Japan right now and play this song on accordion during games of hot-potato : D and so far only one JHS student has recognized it My only *groan* with the writeup is being categorized as "bluegrass". Next sub will be sure to point out this is in the "Old Time" or "Appalacian String Band" tradition!
  3. Hi! I play in an oldtimey folk/punk band called Folk Y'all. Here's a short video we shot for fun. We play the windmill hut theme just about every set we play! You can find more of the band here: http://facebook.com/folkyall
  4. This is the band I play in, Folk Y'all. And we like to sing about Pokémon(and wizards and bongs). Hope y'all like puns. Here's our song, "Pokemon Blues" http://soundcloud.com/folkyall/pokemon-blues
  5. This is a short bathroom recording with a single mic. Might not be OCR sub worthy but I really like it. Hope you enjoy! See you at ConnectiCon? https://soundcloud.com/worldsbestgrandpa/tanooki-rag Any feedback on the recording and playing is appreciated
  6. Hey y'all! The folk band I play with, "Folk Y'all!", will be at CTCon playing game tunes on the banjo, accordion and various crusty acoustic instruments. Hope to high-5 some of you OCR fans! Check out this video from CTCON 2012 :3 Obligatory social media: https://www.facebook.com/folkyall Dance all stoopid!
  7. Here's another remix on cruddy old instruments! This time it's the pokecenter theme on banjo, accordion and some flatfoot dancing. https://soundcloud.com/worldsbestgrandpa/polka-center Let me know what you think!
  8. Thanks for the feedback! The autoharp is definitely the most problematic in the EQing. I'll try to tweak this and up the toy piano before I submit this song to the judges. I'm working on a whole vgmusic cover album with crusty old instruments. Probably won't sub most of them to OCR..
  9. Latest recording: https://soundcloud.com/worldsbestgrandpa/soggy-carousel-song-of-storms This version has some creaks and the spinning card is buried deeper in the mix. Stereo micing on the accordion and some panning on other instruments. I also went ahead and added light compression and some EQing. Let me know what you think
  10. Thanks for the responses! I'm re-recording it now in a MUCH smaller room using 2 mics this time to get some stereo sound, which is new to me and actually pretty fun. It's definitely a lot "closer" and more full sounding. The only drawback is that now you can hear every little creak and click of my crumbling button box, but maybe that will just add to the charm. Hopefully the card on bike tire will blend it all together. I really wish I had something more creaky - there's a really noisy old door in my apartment I might try using. Added some heavy stomping in the new recording, but that will probably be it for percussion. Also trying variations on the toy piano but it's barely playable! Every time I'm in nyc I always hit up union square, the bedford ave stop on the L, or on st marks right near a cool game shop. Once the weather is warmer, I'll be out there a lot more. I'm just waiting for the day I see someone with an OCR shirt while playing a game cover! I should have a new version of this song in a day or two. Thanks again for the crits!
  11. [EDIT] NEW VERSION HERE --> https://soundcloud.com/worldsbestgrandpa/soggy-carousel-song-of-storms This time I'll post here for feedback before I submit to the judges The crowd favorite, "Song of Storms", on autoharp, accordion and toy piano with some pokemon card on a spinning bike tire action... https://soundcloud.com/worldsbestgrandpa/soggy-carousel Everybody seems to love this tune even if they don't know it's vgmusic. I play this tune every time I go busking with my button-box accordion (NY/CT/MA areas). People that do recognize it usually do a triple take. If you've ever given me a dollar, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! No compression or equalization - just mixed down. I'd really like someone's opinion about mastering this song. I'm using a Shure Beta57A microphone and the Tascam DP-02 portastudio. I'm worried my first sub might not get accepted because of some compression issues, so I'm trying to do it right this time. Any feedback would be helpful, thanks!
  12. Yeah, that's pretty much it. I figured it's a melody that's been beat to death so it would be more fun to just have fun with harmonies. Especially with the harmonica. I was going for some sort of chicken vibe, not much of a songbird.
  13. Haha yeah there's no real lead instrument, but all the instruments contribute to the perceived melody. It's definitely about the oldtimey charm. Check out This is the "jam" sound that you'd here if you went to a fiddle or banjo festival. Thanks for the response! I did use the compressor on my recording unit. I'm not much good at that sort of stuff.
