Back on track! Thanks for all the kind birthday wishes, everyone. Anna left today for Roanoke to take the Virginia State Bar, so wish her well, too - it's been a long road through law school but the light at the end of the tunnel is visible! This solo piano Castlevania mix from Dhsu is another cut off the Bad Dudes' freely available concept album Jingle All the Way, which focused on some of the shortest bits of VGM ever penned. Mr. Hsu writes:

""You Gon' Get Whipped" is somewhat of a personal milestone, as it's the first time I've produced a track entirely on my own. Normally I only record the MIDI data and have to ask someone to actually add a piano sample and render it for me, but this time I decided to take Reaper for a spin and do it myself. Granted, it was more out of necessity due to putting it off until the night before the deadline (big thanks to SnappleMan for telling me how to use reverb plugins at 3:00am), but it's nice to be a little more independent.

I have to give The Bad Dudes a lot of credit for my musical development in general -- each track I've done for them has given me a chance to experiment with something new. Multi-track recording, punching in, and sequencing entire arrangements were all firsts for me while working with these guys. It's definitely an honor and a privilege to be in the company of such talented and downright awesome individuals despite my comparative lack of musical know-how. I can only hope I reach their level some day."

Oh, the humility ;) Cool, though - always great to see folks learning and expanding their horizons. There's a strong offbeat here, and stylistically it sounds like something the Addams Family might have on in their parlor. It certainly accomplishes the goal of fleshing out the extremely brief source material into a full composition with both clarity & panache. Vinnie writes:

"Great to see dhsu starting to put together tracks entirely on his own (and sounding just as good as his other tracks on this site), and also great to see another remix from Jingle All the Way that meets the site standards. Listening to the source, I was pretty baffled how someone could turn this into a full-fledged song, but this keeps the source going almost the entire time, with some chord/note tweaks to give the song a direction. Very nice ramp-up into a chorus of sorts halfway through - it's excellent to see so much done with so little."

Well said; enjoy this thoughtfully-embellished arrangement from Dhsu!

Sounds extremely classy and very artistic in the way the piano seems to carry out the tone of the ReMix. Nice. The fake ending would have gotten me if I didn't know better from watching the video.

Nice classical elaboration on a what was originally a handful of notes. It's a sweet, brisk thing that obviously expands the material into a sustainable form.

Definitely didn't sense that it was a very challenging mix to make; I'm a fan of Dhsu and believe that this arrangement would be achievable for him while comatose, but not every piano rendition needs to be Shnababula levels of intricacy, particularly of a source of this simplicity. The little touches like the spacing between notes make it worth it.

This is fairly non-descript territory to be sure, but its always good to hear the ivory played well.

This is amazing, I love how you took a very short track and extracted so much substance out of it that it allowed for a variety of in depth exploration. Great job on this!

I love the schizophrenic tempo swells throughout the mix

Same here.

I particularly like the fake ending around 2:00.

I'm seriously considering proposing marriage to you, Dhsu.

I love the Amelie-esque take on the Castelvania theme.

Brillant work, as always, excellent job.

Cheers.

My girlfriend and I just watched that movie about a week and a half ago. I think it's a fairly good comparison to this piece. All it needs now is some accordion

I like it. It has subtlety, while still being accessible. I'm also fascinated whenever someone can take a short tune and turn it into something more, eh, feature length.

Also Dhsu does good pie-a-no stuff.

One of my favorite Dhsu pieces! Thought this one was arranged especially smartly.

Great stuff!

Always a track that I listen to when it pops up in my mixlist.

I won't be downloading this version since I have Jingle All The Way, but it's a beautiful track and well done.
