What, you thought we were done?

One more mix for Friday, marking five straight amazing mixes & an excellent start to December 2016! WillRock rounds out the business week with his compo-winning arrangement of SMB3 that pairs chiptune & Sonic-style FM funk with the "World 1 Map" & "Athletic" themes.

This was part of the Gamer's Rhapsody 3 and OCR-sponsored ReMix contest, Super Rhapsody Bros. 3! Thanks to OceansAndrew for organizing everything, as well as him, DragonAvenger, Arrow, AND FenixDown for judging the entries live at the event. With his win, WillRock earned a quick mixpost, so here we be!

"I ripped off PROTO·DOME.

0:20-0:26 - "Athletic"
0:27-0:31 - "World 1 Map"
0:32-0:36 - "Athletic"
0:37-0:42 - "World 1 Map"
0:43-0:47 - "Athletic"
0:53-1:03 - "Athletic"
1:19-1:24 - "World 1 Map"
1:25-1:45 - "Athletic"
2:01-2:06 - "World 1 Map"
2:11-2:17 - "World 1 Map"
2:38-2:59 - "Athletic"
3:00-3:25 - "World 1 Map"

If you're wondering what parts the "Athletic" bits are, it follows the same structure as the original."

OCR judge AND compo judge OceansAndrew writes:

"This is a little bit different than Will's usual style and it really works nicely. What really brings the mix to life is the attention and expression in the lead writing. There's a solo too!

The other entries brought some good arrangement ideas, but this one demonstrated the cleanest production and had its ideas in a very concise package. There was very little excess in this mix, and it demonstrated a lot of creative ideas, combining multiple themes. The overall mix had an extra layer of polish as well that helped set it apart."

It's a relatively liberal mix, so at times you might feel like you're listening to a remastered version of a Sonic OST and not an SMB arrangement, but it's all in there, and I can confirm that the lead writing is, in fact, dope. Beats are funky-fresh, bass is sexy-sick, and production is squeaky-clean, among other hyphenated adjective pairings. Thanks to all who entered, thanks to WillRock for a slammin' entry, and thanks to Gamer's Rhapsody for having us back & for continuing to grow and represent VGM in the mad-brisk (read: COLD!) twin cities area!

Reminds me very much of the old Demo scene days. Lizardking, Purplemotion...

Particularly PM...this is some strong chip tune work here. Really digging it.

WillRock with a swing groove! Very nice. How much.

As usual with Will things are never repetitive and ideas always seem to building off each other. The solo at 1:58 is so wild and almost dizzying. Another great one.

I really had to laugh and agree when I read this, because I had JUST thought the same thing while listening to this ReMix. Even though it's not the same tune, musically and feeling-wise, I got a Casino-like vibe off this mix. The switching back and forth between the World 1 map and Athletic was done extremely well, and even without the breakdown I could hear both sources, so great job on taking this in a new direction while maintaining the originals so that they were recognizable. Not the typical Willrock style that I know him the most from, but still a fantastically funky mix with tight production, good writing and a clean, cool sound. Definitely putting this one on my Ipod.
