Long after the events of the classic ''Mega Man'' series, the ''Mega Man X'' series highlights the exploits of Dr. Light's last creation, known as '''X'''. Sealed in a capsule in an underground lab, X is unexpectedly unearthed years after Dr. Light's death by an archaeologist named Dr. Cain. X is the first robot with the human capacity to think for himself and make his own decisions. Once Dr. Light's design notes were found, this ability was soon built into every robot thereafter. Some of these Reploids — so called because their design was effectively "replicated" from X — chose to rebel against their human creators, the most aggressive among them bent on eradicating the human race. Guiltstruck and led by a sense of justice, X makes it his purpose to hunt and destroy these "Mavericks" in an effort to protect the peace.

Like '''[[OCR Mascot 006|Mega Man]]''' before him, X has the Variable Weapons System; this allows him to copy a defeated Maverick's weapon into his X-Buster and use it against his enemies. Added to his arsenal is the ability to wall-jump to facilitate exploration. X may also find capsules left by the late Dr. Light that, piece by piece, upgrade his systems into full armor. Joined by fellow Maverick Hunter '''[[OCR Mascot 161|Zero]]''', X tackles the wave of robots led by the head Maverick, Sigma.
