Arranging the music of one song...

"Gau"

Primary Game: Final Fantasy VI (Square , 1994, SNES), music by Nobuo Uematsu

Short but sweet - similar to the beautiful Back to Towne arrangement that I think I liked a little better, McVaffe's arranged version of Gau's Theme is nevertheless definitely worth the listen, as he has mastered piano arranging so that the original song, which was rather quantized, plays with an excellent and very human flow. Great stuff - I wouldn't mind hearing the whole great soundtrack done, if he can keep up THIS level of quality ^^ (no pressure, man! ^^)

Short, sudden ending, so on and so forth, yes, there are things that people can pick at with this mix and I would tend to agree, but for what is in this ReMix, I do have to say that I liked the piano work and the flute didn't bug me as much as it could have. A nice mix, but that's all. McVaffe certainly has better in his collection, but this is a nice bite-sized piece.

This is very pretty, but I'd be tempted to call it just a cover with some additional parts thrown in. The playing is nice, and the sound quality is good, but between this and the FFIV piano collections version, I would go with that for some more intricate background material. I will also agree with others that the flute added doesn't really gel with the piano as much as compete with it for dominance.

It's nice, but not as much of an arrangement as a cover.

This one doesn't grab me as much as "Melodies of Life" or "Back to Towne" but there's still a lot to love here. Very melancholy and emotive, and the strings in the background were really subtle, but a nice touch. I don't have a problem with the flute, but I do agree that it's pushed pretty far back so whether you love or hate the flute, it doesn't do that much one way or another. This definitely would have benefited from a stronger ending, too, but overall I don't think I was as bothered by some of the issues that others are pointing out.

I can never get enough McVaffe piano :-)

I never really liked this one - there's a piano rendition in the FF6 Piano Collections that is more intricate, and this doesn't deviate at all from the original except make the lead melody a piano, and with backing strings a flute put in the background.

A little short, with a somewhat abrupt ending, but very nice work. The flute was far back enough in the mix that it didn't really detract as much as other are saying. I think the weakness here is that the song is pretty much verbatim, and needs a good deal of additional material. It's been personalized for sure, but it could use some more. It is nice that it's such an early mix, but the sound quality is there, Usually when I see a mix with an OCR number of less than 400, I just think of tinny synths, but this was smooth and well produced.

So sweetly melancholy... the piano arrangement is just what this song needed.

Gau was such a sweetie too... "Mr. Thou!!!" *giggles*

"Draped in monster hides, eyes shining with intelligence. A youth surviving against all odds..."

This is Gau´s profile, the original track gave away that feeling of a lonely child without parents and home, but Vaffe enlarged that feel with this mix, piano and flutes are very good instrument choises. This makes me wanna cry.

I really like this! It's a peaceful, beautiful rendition of one of my favorite FF themes. I myself didn't find the flute an issue. Maybe it was off - I wasn't paying SUCH close attention - but I thought it was a nice touch. Either way, this is great stuff :)

This song is great, but lose that flute. It's out of tune (and it shouldn't be because of vibrato, okay? The flute has an air vibrato, not a tuned one), and it just made the song about ten times less enjoyable.

Every other element really makes the song shine, though. Great work.

Gau's theme is my favorite song in Final Fantasy VI, mainly because it's a touching melody. McVaffe is one of my favorite remixers on this site, mainly because his talent is incredible, and I became hooked with his Ryu (Street Fighter 2) remix... Also, I love the simplicity of just putting a great game song to piano melody (Shout out to Spekkosaurus on his Earthbound remix)... So, I'm sure you can see how much of a review I'm going to give this piece... This is one of those rare songs that I feel is an extention of what the original composer had in mind... Gau's theme does not fit techno music, and to put it to techno would be revolting...

The song is a bit short though, but this is a song that works perfectly well just to sit and put on repeat for an hour or two, it's that great...

10/10 on this one definately.

McVaffe definitely has so much talent yet untapped, and this is proof. Every piece of work I've heard by him is very well done, and I must say this is one of them. But I also know that there's so much more he can learn to make his music even better. 8O

Final Fantasy VI 'Gau's Lament'

The intro of this reminded me of those church piano songs they play when everyone's walking in (ok, I won't talk about that anymore). Mostly a straight piano solo affair here, but we've got strings and flutes which come in near the second half. Not too long like most of McVaffe's piano arrangements, and the quality is as good as always. If you're a sucker for this stuff then you'll get sucked in. Good work by the big M.C.V.A.F.F.E.
