ReMix:Final Fantasy VII "Sector 7 Hath Wrought the Angel" 5:06
By Trenthian
Arranging the music of one song...
"One-Winged Angel"
Primary Game: Final Fantasy VII (Sony , 1997, PS1), music by Nobuo UematsuPosted 2004-01-27, evaluated by the judges panel
Trenthian gives us a One-Winged Angel ReMix from FF7, featuring the original vocals over his own new arrangement with some mastering assistance from compyfox. The ReMixer writes:
"OWA - Everyone's favorite it seems, yet wholly underrepresented in the bajillion and one ff7 remixes on the site. I got bored with just OWA, the main theme needed love too! Like the monkeys! ... (actually maybe the monkey's needed a lot more than love.... like a hammer... and their heads...and bashing.) Playing around with some serious song crossing, I found inspiration to further mess around with other more musical parts of OWA. Having never done a peice with a heavy focus on the 70's Club sound, i thought I'd relive some of the good old days of the hand clap. I also wanted to mix electronica with my own brand of orchestral interpretation. (the oboe owns you.) I dont even want to think of how many OWA mixes you guys have had to listen to, and I dont really feel great about throwing another one at you, but I had fun with it. Hopefully you can enjoy it as well. "
Honest enough - don't really know what that bit about the monkeys is, but fortunately we don't reject submissions based on ReMixers' tendencies to randomly incorporate simians into their accompanying mix descriptions. There was some debate amongst the judges as to whether this ReMix relies too heavily on the original vocal samples, or for that matter whether the piece can be effectively arranged without said vocals, as they are quite core to the piece and would be difficult to recreate or replace with alternative instrumentation. If you haven't heard "Ave Satani" or any of the soundtrack from the original Omen (which won an Oscar if memory recalls), you should check that out, as I wouldn't be surprised if it was part of Nobuo's inspiration on the original. Trenthian's done a good job of updating the original with a good beat, varied augmentation, and a comfortable piece that wraps itself around the vocal samples and sounds very natural with them on top. Good stuff.

to be honest, i was pretty underwhelmed for the first half of the mix. Once there was some vocal slicing and such, and more than just the in-game vocals, + drums, I felt a little better about it. Really, I think the first minute or two should have been chopped off, and things taken from there. Decent, but not awesome.

Ah, boy do I remember this. This mix was the shiz for me back in the day that it was still just a WIP. I remember thinking that if the judges voted NO for it, that I would leave OCR . The choir from the source is a really cool idea. It almost makes this a mashup in a since, but your ideas are all over the place. The orchestral samples are a little better here than your first mix. The drums are great! The percussion adds sooo much to this mix! Like your first mix, there is a little over compression/clipping that I hear when things get especially dense. Once again, the arrangement is really where this shines. Trenthian's attention to dynamics is a shining example to us all! It's how you make a 5 minute track not feel like 5 minutes. Phenomenal!

Quite honestly, it's my favorite remix on the site so far. Not to say that there aren't other good mixes, by any means! Just that it's been stuck in my head for a little over a month now, and I'm still not tired of it! Not many songs receive that kind of praise from me.
Keep up the awesomeness, and I'd love to hear another OWA remix from you, Trenthian!
And by the way, Trenthian...yours is the first remix I've reviewed. It's one of the first to be worth it!

Personally, I think it's cool! Once again, you've got that perfect mix of that haunting chant in Latin with a beat. It may be just plain strange to some of you, but to take a musical leap like that deserves priase and appreciation. Good work, Trenthian.

Sorry for reviving a fairly old review, but I had to say that this is my favourite remix on the site. An excellent remix of an already great piece. The vocals are done well, and I especially like the tune at 4:30.

Just me personally; I hated it.
It is hardly a tribute to the original One Winged Angel. I'll be honest, I hate this sort of stuff (rock, techno) but it had some really bad parts.
The think I hated most was at about 3:06, the bongo drums were a poor choice.

I really love this ReMix! The lyrics from the original retain their coolness, even with the altered pacing and timing. The new sounds give the song that 80's feel, but the clap makes it sound more ancient -- in a good way! Plus, with the fast beat and the pausing at key places, this has become my favorite song, period.
Also, for my WRT 102 class in college, we were assigned to explicate (review and research) our favorite songs in an essay. Guess which song I explicated? This one. And, despite a couple of marks for incorrect word choice, I got a 100% on it. And my instructor is entirely ignorant of Video Game Music. That shows you how good the song is!
Yay! My very first post. XD

Another favorite of mine on this site. To this date, you are the only person I have found who attempted to remix "One-Winged Angel" and pull it off with a spectacular performance! I'm a big fan of FF7 and dedicate myself to finding any sort of One-Winged Angel themes I can find.
This song is a welcome swap from the super-serious end-of-the-world uberscary origional.
It actually makes One-Winged Angel somthing you want to dance to.

This is...different. I always thought that "a one-winged angel" was OK, but what´s this? A funked up version with some sort of asian drums and some serious beats together with electric bass at the end. It gets actually real good at 3:48 when it´s ready to make a great final showdown. Somehow I like it, good thing that you didn´t remove the choir in the back, that´s what making this song special. Interesting job Trenthian.
By the way, isn´t this the music to "legendaryfrogs" minigame in "FF7-Random Battles"?
