Arranging the music of one song...

"Light Is Green"

Primary Game: Halo 5: Guardians (Microsoft , 2015, XBONE), music by Kazuma Jinnouchi

Posted 2016-11-21, evaluated by the judges panel

Our FIRST EVAR ReMix of an XBONE game comes courtesy DusK (Dustin Branscum), who offers up an epic symphonic metal arrangement of Halo 5:

"Have you ever heard a piece of music that just haunts you? Something that just seems to follow you long after you heard it? "Light is Green," for me, is one of those pieces of music.

Needless to say, I had to remix it. Keeping the "epic" feel with an orchestra, I added my own touch of metal. This remix was a freaking blast to make. Metal always is, but I always feel so much more accomplished when I can successfully blend metal with other elements and genres, especially one that I'm so new at.

Hope you guys like it too. :)"

Glad Dustin had fun with this one, because the result is a blast, too - high octane metal, some synth components, cinematic Thomas Newman-style piano, and energetic orchestral writing all combine for an engaging & exciting listen. DaMonz writez:

"The adaptation and expansion over the original is well executed, and the arrangement has plenty of highs and lows to offer which keep things very interesting all the way through. And great guitar playing!"

Judges had some shared production gripes surrounding mechanical sequencing on the strings & general crowding of the soundscape, but the consensus was that neither detracted too much from the overall. Neither bothered me much, personally, and I dug the momentum and mixed instrumentation and especially the lack of repetition, with new ideas being introduced and strong development pushing things forward. Great to see more from DusK, very cool to have our first XB1 mix on the site, and of course the Halo franchise has an amazing musical history which, in spite of the mistakes that were made and the drama that ensued, continues to enthrall under new composer Kazuma Jinnouchi.

Strong haunting opening riffs with some bouncy moments with the piano and looming synths. Will definitely recommend this song to everyone!

Orchestra meets metal, the classic combo. Yes, I'm a sucker for strings and a drum kit and overdriven guitars. The atmospheric intro gives no indication of the rock that's about to hit your face, and that's good...when that build up goes through and the storm breaks on multiple occasions, it's great. There's some echo between piano and guitar that works really well too. But the thing that gets me is the synth bass...I would say that this is what gives this track its distinctive character and makes it memorable.

I'm not familiar with the source, but this remix rocks. I love the build up, and resolve at the end.
