Sweet elixir soup, eh? Beats a fruitcake any day; Ridiculously Garrett (Garrett Mandeville) makes his OCR debut with this funky, jazzy, & eccentric wintry soul revue arranging "Outset Island," from An OverClocked Christmas v.XI:
"This is a remix I made for another OverClocked Christmas album, vol. 11. Whoah. I figured, hey, why not submit it? I'll run my chances. It's a fairly simple track. But it's pretty jammin, you know?"
I do now! Garret oscillates between styles in a sort of (tasteful) lounge act fashion while staying on the same broad wavelength of warm, comfort-infused R&B groove meets mellow jazz meandering. Or something like that? It's unusual and less simple than he lets on, but it's goooood. Liontamer writes:
"Loved the very involved Outset melodic variations that Garrett used throughout; it was slowed down and there were a TON of grace notes, but nothing that broke up the melodic structure when you listen carefully; nice work and a fun Xmas treat! Been waiting to finally get Garrett posted as an official OC ReMixer, and this one's gonna make it happen."
It's a slick, memorable debut which really shows some depth - there are isolated piano bits that even wax classical, and the piano/ep/synth/clav/string+ palette is used wisely - in addition to the the confidence to make certain transitions, take some time widdit, and do something peculiar & transformative but also familiar. NutS likes the Soup, too:
"Beautiful. The soloing is sweet and attention to detail is top notch. The structure is kinda broken up by the pauses, but they add a really nice touch to the arrangement. The harmonies are woven in really well to complement the melodies. This was super enjoyable, and fans of songs with jazzy sensibilities will enjoy this greatly."
I dig the grit & dirt on that synth lead, the funky little stage left clav part, and yeah... while it wouldn't work in most mixes, the longer pauses here feel right, at least to me. Stylish way for Garrett to make an official OCR splash & a superb addition to the album; definitely looking forward to what's next...

I think Ridiculously Garret is going to be my new vernacular to describe things in life that defy logic. M'friend this is your day job.
