Huey Lewis had a lot to say about the Power of Love, but today's all about the Power of Mom, as we celebrate Mother's Day with this chippy, funky take on Phonetic Hero's Wargroove OST, from Lemonectric (Benjamin Hoffman):
"I've done several collaborations with Pete/Phonetic Hero, from Mega Man ReMix competitions to both of our debut original albums, and it's always been a treat. He's also helped me out by being a second set of ears, sending me information about projects I might be interested in, etc.
At some point, we'd talked about doing a project that involved writing original tunes and then arranging them. Well, here we go, I guess. He wrote an original tune and now I'm arranging it. Listening to the soundtrack, Tenri's theme ("Dancing Crane") stuck out the most -- the instrumentation and writing both hooked me, and I had a pretty clear idea of the direction I could take it. The ReMix was definitely influenced by The Messenger, which I was playing at the time.
Thanks for all the support you've given me over the years, Pete. I hereby confer upon you the title of honorary second mom."
Collective awwwwwww ensues :) This isn't the first time a mixer mixed another mixer's OST, but I've been looking forward to posting an arrangement of Pete's Wargroove soundtrack ever since it came out. Mission accomplished; Hoffman chips it up in style, with NES & MD/FM timbres, crunchy & syncopated/varied drums, and nimble, bendy/modulated leads. Rexy evaluated:
"How do you transform the source and keep it recognizable for over 90% of the time? Your answer is writing something like this. The foundations behind Phonetic Hero's original writing for Wargroove ended up with various re-arrangement techniques - rhythmic alterations, melodies on top of established rhythmic riffs, colorful harmonies, additional backing instrumentation, and some drastic chord changes within the second half. If Pete's original motifs weren't the forefront, the koto riff in the source would be the idea drawn out - and it's astounding to hear Ben keep things very well preserved while doing some very creative twists at the same time. Throw in a clean production with some very well-manipulated synth/chiptune tones, and what we have is an engaging homage for someone Ben looks up to - well worth the showcase at OCR!"
S'great stuff; glad to feature it & Wargroove on the site, props to Ben for the mix & Pete for the tunes, and mad, undying respect to all the moms out there, who perform amazing, love-fueled feats of kindness on a daily basis!
