ReMix:Streets of Rage 2 "Sega FM Drum and Bass" 2:51
By Parker Walker
Arranging the music of one song...
"Spin on the Bridge"
Primary Game: Streets of Rage 2 (Sega , 1992, GEN), music by Motohiro Kawashima, Yuzo KoshiroPosted 2023-11-29, evaluated by the judges panel
Piggybacking on Charles Cornell's one-part analysis, one-part musician crush on Yuzo Koshiro, we continue the co-sign celebration of the greatness of Streets of Rage 2's score! After our initial SoR2 mixpost, it's time to move out the "house" of stage 1, as Parker Walker puts his own kinetic, frenetic DnB enhancement of Streets of Rage 2's stage 2 theme!
"My remix of Yuzo's classic "Spin on the Bridge", in my opinion one of the best video game songs of all time. For this remix, I wanted to push two facets of the original to the max: Sega FM elements and the DnB-style frentetic energy. At the same time, I wanted to keep the main theme intact to not alienate fans. I would say this isn't a radical remix, but rather the original and more. Besides one tape-stop effect, this song was made ENTIRELY (drums, everything, effects) with Plogue's Sega FM emulator chipsynth MD and I am still discovering what the synth can really do. I'm going to give SOR2 a rest for a while and perhaps do some SOR1 or other stuff. Let me know what you want to hear. That's all there is to say - I hope you enjoy and thanks for the judges' consideration. Sorry for the uninspired title. Thanks for listening!"
Hey, there's nothing wrong with a title that tells you what's in store! Beneath the surface though, Parker takes a tune that was high octane to begin with and just totally rethinks the sound palette, appreciated in a huge way by judge prophetik music:
"the variety of synths in the opening alone is just great. tons of creative noisy stuff going on all at the same time. 0:49's where it really gets going, and there's a ton of craziness going on in. i really appreciate the commitment to just getting dirty throughout.
1:40's shift is great - getting an extreme-g vibe from that hat sound, and the continued energy through this section is great. 2:15 does repeat the synths from earlier, but with different drums, so i don't mind the recap."
I'm so on board. :-D The moment things ratchet up at 1:14, it feels like this went from a stage theme into full-on Bare Knuckle boss mode; I just love how effortlessly Parker took this to the next level with a denser sound followed by grimier energy 1:39, showcasing some very dynamic shifts! Man, another great spotlight on chipsynth MD too, which led to judge Emunator opining:
"You've got some seriously squelchy sounds going on. The sound design is off the charts. For as insane as your mix is, you manage the levels and balance quite well. Crazy stuff."
With Parker looking to pivot towards SoR1 in the future, if this is Parker only scratching the surface of chipsynth MD, we certainly can't wait for him to be fully unleashed on Koshiro's seminal beat-'em-up soundtrack! :-)

This remix is definitely a VIBE. It is very distinct and flavorful, like that one licorice flavor that really stands out.

Bit of a tough listen at first because of the thinness of the PWM bass until 0:45. Then it's pretty sick bass work paired with the TB303-like kick.
