This piece would have also made a great Mother's Day feature given the game's plot, but when you've got something even more on the nose, it can't be helped. :-) Here's a lovely piece arranging a pair of themes by Canadian superstar Cœur de pirate from Child of Light, arranged by French ReMixer Bluelighter alongside an intimate ensemble of performers:
- Bluelighter: arrangement, mixing, piano
- Bowlerhat: flute
- Dewey Newt: trombone
- Ian Martyn: acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, hand drum (bendir)
Despite quite the sad story, Child of Light being a dream adventure title was a mood Bluelighter intentionally attempted to preserve even while adapting the airy themes to new instrumentation:
"Here is an acoustic arrangement of "Aurora" and "Down to a Dusty Plain" from the game Child of Light, composed by Cœur de pirate, with some rock sonorities. The whole game marked me by its dreamy atmosphere, with some sadness in the OST. I've tried to keep this spirit in my arrangement.
I've made a first attempt some years ago with piano solo. But I didn't get something promising enough to advance.
I've restarted later by playing some piano arpeggios, trying to imagine melody by other instruments in the same time (part 2). I only thought about flute and trombone at this step. I integrated other parts that I've yet thought with the piano version (parts 1 and 3). I yet wanted a culminant point at part 3. So, I integrated guitar, bass, and drum to make the rhythm.
I developed like this. And I conclude the arrangement by a dreamy part similar to the intro.
I'm grateful to all instrument players who have collaborated with me. They really helped me to get this mix as I wanted! Enjoy!"
This piece was improved with a resubmission that tightened up the production, yet for me this was a super easy call to begin with. The structure's melodically conservative, but the performance of our four musicians is nicely personalized, summarized succinctly by judge prophetik music:
"the arrangement as a whole is still really fun - there's great interweaving of the lead instruments, the piano work is excellent, and the ensemble works better in ear than it may on paper (flute and trombone is a surprising combo!)."
Good interplay with the woodwind at :26 doubling the melody, followed by the arriving bendir at :38 adding a relaxing new dimension. There was an excellent textural shift around 1:34; I particularly appreciated the way the drumming and its timing lent movement and verve to the piece until 2:24 (and again at 2:39). Sweet finish at 3:09 as well, where the ending felt like it resolved and then resolved two more times with what felt like the final note or flourish. :-D Though I chuckled at the quasi-fakeouts, there was nothing wrong with it, and I tip my metaphorical cap to an technique that most wouldn't even attempt let alone succeed with. Wonderful job by Bluelighter, Bowlerhat, Dewey & Ian in bringing these lovely themes to life with their unique acoustic palette!
