Primary Game: ToeJam & Earl (Sega , 1991, GEN), music by John BakerPosted 2025-02-24, evaluated by the judges panel
ToeJam & Earl are funkified further by ChapMan & Joe (and PF, and Ian, and Ronin) delivering some OverClocked Genesis that might leave you incredulous! ;-) Alright, let me introduce the elements:
- Zach Chapman - arrangement, mixing, mastering, bass
- TheManPF - guitars
- newmajoe - saxophone, vocals, lyrics, beatboxing, bonga, tambourine
- Ian Martyn - keyboard
- Ronin Op F - percussion
Part of Dwelling of Duels' Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Month in April 2024, it's extremely difficult to go wrong with ToeJam & Earl as one's music choice. Naturally, judge prophetik music's first comment out of the gate was...:
"TJ&E has such great soundtracks.
fun beat right away, you can tell this is going to have a fun vibe. bass sounds awesome right away - 50-second bass opening? yes please! - and the beatbox stuff is great! what a fun idea.
band sound comes in at 0:53. [...] joe sounds fantastic on the sax throughout this. vocals are hilarious. some great rhymes and well performed.
more bass and groove at 2:48. [...] sax solo at 3:27 was excellent, and props for mastering it differently so it sticks out of the mix better than the parts from earlier. the wah effects are fun too. [...]
overall this is a gem. tons of character throughout and a really fun idea executed well. [...] this is definitely over the bar."
What else can you say when the rhythm is just groovin'? HEY, 4:42, I see what you did there, Joe! I could check the DNA, but I'm a lousy geneticist. /shakes fist :-P Hearing the sick flowin' and fit funk feel, judge Hemophiliac was gettin' what they're playin' at:
"A strong arrangement, with fun solos, and solid performances all around. The source is well represented and the solos all feel like the right vibe for this track. The beatboxing was a nice touch and something we don't get to hear much of around the community. [...]
The vocals were mostly handled well [...] Oh and I would be remiss to not mention the bass with this being TJ&E. Excellent usage of the bass and letting it shine out when it's time for it to, like the intro and the middle section before the solos."
Excellent comping & vamping throughout, and Joe on beatbox was indeed a great touch. Let these guys cook all day! My excellent intelligence demands no further evidence: what a nice job by Zach and his Funkotron homies. :-) It's the real deal, so don't keep this on the DL!!

It's the real deal
We keep it on the DL
We got sick flowin' and a fit funk feel
You courting controversy, I'm the in-house polemicist
My drive's more Mega than an overclocked Genesis
How do I do it? Is it born or bred?
I could check the DNA, but I'm a lousy geneticist
But either way, yea, it must be said
Yo, my rhymes is so funky, gotta call a hygenicist
It's just the emphasis I place with such an eloquence
My excellent intelligence demands no further evidence
But if I sense the listener has got incredulous
I got a chorus, let me introduce the elements
You just don't know what we're doin'
We locked in the rhythm, the rhythm is just groovin'
You just can't hear what we're sayin', uh
But you gettin' what we're playin' at
Got a chorus, let me introduce the elements
You just don't know what we're doin'
We locked in the rhythm, the rhythm is just groovin'
You just can't hear what we're sayin', uh
But you gettin' what we're playin' at
Just don't know what we're doin'
We locked in the rhythm, the rhythm is just groovin'
You just can't hear what we're sayin', uh
But you gettin' what we're playin' at
