Arranging the music of one song...
"Title ~ Stage 2"
Primary Game: Sky Shark (Taito , 1989, NES), music by Tim FollinPosted 2025-09-27, evaluated by the judges panel
Hey hey, some Tim Follin today! :-) We can argue forever about who belongs on the Mount Rushmore of VGM composers, there's lot of deserving names, but my personal favorite has always been Follin, so it's a treat to have Tim Follin's shoot-'em-up soundtrack to Sky Shark supplemented with Spanish spices by tibonev! I was at VGM CON this past spring voting in the Tornado of Solos compo this was from as part of the DoD panel audience, so we're proud to have tibone's updated version, now sounding its best:
"This arrangement was originally done for Dwelling of Duels special Tornado of Solos competition. It was a required source, to be re-interpreted as desired. This song got me 2nd place. :)
My approach was to try and play it as a classical guitar meets shred bits piece. Kinda inspired by Al Di Meola style. I'm not good enough to call this "flamenco", so, acoustic Spanish-inspired it is.
The title of my arrangement literally means: "The Great Timothy Falling" (which kinda sounds like "Follin", which was the joke). [...]
The entire mix and arrangement was done in a minimalistic style in order to put all the focus on the lead guitars. Every element (including the percussion) was performed live."
prophetik music led the call for tightening this up when it initially hit the panel, though he was quick to praise its authentic sound, and he was also first to co-sign tibone's tweaking of the timing for this revision:
"opening faster runs at 0:12 still rush a bit, but it's not bad and makes it clear that it's live [...] the faster clapping section around 1:06 really sounds great - it's timed just right to feel like a busker or street performer. 1:27 is oodles better than last time around, and the solo section sounds great. the octave section at the end is a great ending to the track. [...]
very easy vote. nice work!"
After praising tibonev for how novel his arrangement was the first time around, Emunator was glad to see this improved so quickly and thoroughly:
"Like I've come to expect from tibonev, this is a clean resub that does a diligent job of addressing all the points raised in the first round of voting! [...] this tightened up the timing across the board without making the song feel robotic, and makes some subtle tweaks to improve the dynamics across the rest of the track just for good measure :) This is how you do it!"
Based on our prior experiences with tibonev, he's always been amenable to feedback, so lucky us that the end result transforms this higher-energy schmup theme into a wonderfully intimate & earnest acoustic experience! You'll be Follin in love with tibone for this one! ;-)
