Arranging the music of 2 songs...
"Kraid's Chamber", "Norfair Area"
Primary Game: Metroid (Nintendo , 1986, NES), music by Hirokazu TanakaPosted 2001-04-15, evaluated by djpretzel
AmIEvil writes: "I feel sorry for the motherbrain, it just sits there in its jar until it gets blasted by a chick in armour. Therefore, I would like to dedicate this remix to... the motherbrain." Damn thoughtful of him, in my opinion. After all, look at things from her perspective - she NEVER gets out, has a terrible living quarters, and 'Fatherbrain' is nowhere to be seen, the lousy bastard. But I digress. This has a cool whistling intro that reminds me of 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' (Metroid the western?), a slow deliberate pace, and some lovely fret noises on the guitar that carries the latter half of the track, which is actually a medley of several Metroid tunes. AmIEvil really does a great job of both fast-paced, action-packed ReMixes and more laid-back, dramatic material, and this is certainly the latter. I especially liked the emphasis on the ride cymbal that accentuates the 3/4 time signature - good shtuff.

Great use (and mix) of the source tunes that still holds up. As others have said, it could be longer, but this remix creatively displays some of the ambience of Samus's journey within its short runtime.

Even having listened to the source material, I don't know where the 1:32+ section comes from. All I know is it reminds me of 'Nerevar Rising' from Morrowind.
Anyway, good remix.

Using decisive notes from the sources, this mix maintains the sounds and moods of each while granting the arrangement some simple but colorful exploration space. That's why I covet the uplifting tangents at 0:38+ and 1:32+. I also like how 1:02 sweeps away the bustling action to reveal the gently swaying core, which could rock an infant to sleep. The mix encounters no dead ends and traverses no uneven ground as it slips in and out of the sources, finding and expressing all it needs to.
It feels like the "old west" whistle in Norfair is deliberately succeeded by the "high noon" bells in Kraid's lair. Perhaps the Mother Brain is anticipating a smokin' quick draw with Samus. The machinery hum and rapid blips at the start sound like mini-alarms, as if foreshadowing the doomsday explosion should Samus win the shoot-out. Or maybe they represent the activity of her life-support system, along with the timely exhalations that could pass for her breathing.
...Yeah, Mother Brain's life sucks. But this mix sure as hell doesn't.

This was Actually the first OCR song heard. And Might I say it's one of the best I've heard so far. AmIevil Did a great job with this one. It's a pity that he hasn't done more.

It takes some real skill to make Metroid listenable for me, and this is very listenable. There is a distinct starcraft vibe once things going, but there are a ton of creative elements throughout that make it unique. The whistling at the beginning is great, as is the layered guitars with some thick delay added, making each scratch on the strings echo on for a long time.
Great stuff here.

Even though the song's length is a little short, to me it fits the way the remix is played. All the different sounds go together smoothly, its like a remix that you don't mind having it stuck in your head. Its one of my favorite metroid songs remixed.

This bit of genius comes in 2 seconds short of the 2 minute mark. I like the brooding that starts to build and eventually breaks out into the hallmark sound of Metroid.
Nice touch on the whistling to set things off. I don't think it is too short since most remixes I've downloaded on OC can't seem to figure out where to end it.
This one is going into my iPod.

Sixth Flying Man is right, I noticed a lot of great tune that are so short . This one is the best remix for Metroid! Yes, I have to admit everything is perfect except for it's short T_T. Also, I wonder if some1 would remix the song when u fight with Mother Brain in Super Metroid. It's darn scary and cool, makes u want to fight Mother Brain all the time while he eye-lasering you. Gotta love Super Metroid !!

Okay... I can't really pick out any of the original tunes, but... Screw it. It's good. I can't say why. Download it. Only downside is, it's too short for its own good. Two minutes is not enough.

Great song, I gotta write this one to a cd. AmIEvil strikes again.
*looks at reveiw above this one*
Uh.... Do you ever read the comments from Djpretzel? He said that AmIEvil wrote the he felt sorry for the motherbrain as she sits in a jar until she gets blasted by a chick in armour (wow, i remembered the "Metric" u in armor) so he would like to dedicate this song TO motherbrain.

Why is it that the older remixes, no matter how good they are, never get many reviews at all?
I think this one is really good, yet no Mother Brain related songs are used. The songs used in this one are Norfair and Kraid's Lair.

The Vigilante says: listen to this mix, NOW!!! its a little bit of interpretative genius. you've never heard kraid done this way before. the piece is haunting, the whistling is fantastic.
you've never heard norfair done...at all before. for those out of the loop, the NES metroid norfair mid was a TERRIBLE dissonant, aharmonic, arythmic mass of beeps that sounded like an 8-bit merry-go-round on crack. it even had an understated oom-pah thing going on...
this pitiful midi, which AmIEviL starts this mix with, is COMPLETELY redefined. he salvages the melody and completely reworks the harmony. it sounds terrific, the drop-D tuned guitars are very moody. i dont know where he pulled this stuff from. its a shame we havent heard anything new from AmIEviL for quite some time, because i think that this is hands down, THE best mix on the site.
listen, NOW, and show AmIEviL your undying gratitude.

AmIevil made a very good job on this one! the "SpaceWhistling" sounds or whatever you could call it are PERFECT, and then there's a medley of a few songs with a sweet style and tempo. One of the best Metroid OC ReMixes IMO.
