IT IS TIME TO GET UNBELIEVABLY FRESH...
How fresh? I *just* told you: unbelievably. And funky, too. This month is the 29th anniversary of Bobby Brown wrapping up production on his career-redefining new jack swing album Don't Be Cruel, AND the 31st anniversary of New Kids on the Block's self-titled debut album. So what, you say? Well it JUST SO HAPPENS that we've got a completely dope & thoroughly nineties vocal new jack swing arrangement of Dracula X from the newly-formed & destined-for-greatness DoD Music Factory. Ringleader & renowned Greek SnappleMan writes:
"So it was MAGFest time in Dwelling of Duels, and the theme was DANCE MONTH! Which basically meant submit a song that people can dance to. As usual, I waited till the week before MAGFest before I even started thinking about it.
I figured I wanted to do some Bobby Brown-sounding new jack swing, and I knew I wanted Chuck on vocal. I went to coda and told him that I wanted a verse and chorus in A minor, new jack swing style. He had that bit tracked out in 20 minutes - we laughed at how silly it was. Then, I sent it to Midee and we laughed at how silly it was, then Midee started doing what Midee does (making incredible music). So, we worked out the song and got it sounding decent. Then, I sent it to Chuck and gave him some subject matter to write lyrics over, which he did, and then he sang and recorded them too. I worked out the rap section and all that, then I went to Yusef and asked him for a guitar solo in A minor, which he gave me within 10 minutes. Then I sat down and mixed the song, submitted to DoD and etc., etc.
We kind of lost the Bobby Brown vibe early on, but it turned out being an homage to early-90s hip hop/RnB/NKOTB, so that's good enough for us. Enjoy."
They got the right stuff, I'll say that much. The beats have that obviously-sampled 8/12-bit grit to 'em, the orchestra hits are served in generous portions, the swing is lively, and just the smooth, I'm-gonna-sex-you-up vocalizing on the intro alone should persuade you. Did I mention the ubiquitous sampled "Whoa"? It is here. Sweet vocals delivered with that kitschy, earnest passion, and what's THIS? We even get a rap? And it's.... amazing? And it segues into a kickin' guitar solo? Flexstyle smells what the factory is cooking:
"Oh sweet mercy YES. This song right here. I actually ended up placing just behind this one in that particular DoD with my XPRTNovice collab, and I couldn't be happier - this is everything good about the early '90s right here... It's polished, that rap breakdown is completely ON POINT, the source usage is all over, Yusef kills it on the solo...yeah. It's a complete package that manages to punch me in the nostalgia feels and keep me on the dancefloor at the same time.
YES YES YES YES YES"
OA arguably goes one step further:
"This is and was the best DoD song ever. Sorry everyone before and everyone after, but you are just aiming for second place now.
The vocal is expressive and not overly treated, and the arrangement is basically a best-of showcase of the entire New Jack Swing genre. All of the references to other songs and motifs of the era are both clever and fun, without being too damaging to the 4th wall. The beats are varied and danceable, the solo tears it up, and the progression of the track is great."
And Palpable is on board as well:
"There was some changing of the Opposing Bloodlines melody so that it didn't fit exactly, but almost all of it was drawn from somewhere in the melody, enough that I felt the whole section was clearly arranging the song. There's also a background synth that doubles the original melody even when the vocals deviate.
Damn, what a jam. I toyed around with some New Jack Swing Sonic remixes several years ago, but this completely nails the style. The vocals had the perfect delivery for this, and the bridge literally made me laugh out loud, though I would have been disappointed if it didn't. The early 90's were the epitome of corny raps."
It's epic stuff, no if's, and's, or but's. Achievement thoroughly unlocked; to whatever extent this is a "joke mix," the punchline is that it's completely badass, a musical motherlode of yesteryear jamz, delivered with confidence, poise, and an uncompromising need to express abundant inner freshness. Speaking of freshness, we just updated the site with some new layout tweaks I've been working the last few months on, and I'm very happy that they're going live on the same day we're posting this juggernaut of a mix.
Singular, brilliant, & infectious; highly recommended!

.......WOW!!!
This could have been SO corny and cheesy but amazingly EVERYTHING works!!! The vocals are totally credible for a 90s boys band, the rap is AMAZING, the solo is on point... I am floored!!
This should be the official anthem of an 90's music comeback!!
I will be blasting this in my car this summer thank you very much!!!

Fair enough; to each their own, I say.
And hey, I'm open to vocal remixes...I still listen to all of the new releases to give each a chance and judge them on their individual merits, and in this case, that openness was rewarded. LOVED this one
Great work all around. ::thumbs up::

Just now, cortjezter said:Whoa, whoa, whoa.
First, I never said hate. I just said they're not really my thing. I also don't like modern country music. So what?
Second, labelling someone "dumb" for their musical tastes is unbecoming for a community leader, immature, and just not very nice in general.
I didn't label you dumb, I labeled "it", i.e. hating vocal mixes, dumb. It's dumb. I'm glad you clarified you don't feel that way; that's good, because it would be a dumb POV.

I'm getting sort of an 80s, early 90s vibe, which I'm really enjoying. The lyrics are amazing, which is saying something, because I'm not really a fan of lyrics thrown into video game music that didn't originally have any. I also feel like if you took this to a club or wherever, it wouldn't immediately come off as sounding like a video game remix. Great job!

Dang it, this would have been perfect for the CastleMania album. Wish I'd known this was in the pipeline. Oh well.

[Intro]
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oooh, oo-oo-oo-oo oo-oo-oo-oooh
Girl
We known each other
For so long
And all I wanna do
All I wanna do
Oooooooooh
[Verse]
GIRL!
When this was new
All I saw was you
I thought you'd be true
But now, baby, we're through
Thought I could be strong
But I guess I was wrong
Girl, how did I go on this long?
Got to come clean
You were my dream
I was naive
Thought you were the one for me
(You just led me on)
I couldn't see
Now I'm the one payin'
(So I keep on sayin')
[Chorus]
You stepped on my heart for the last time
It's time to go my own way
Get you off my mind
You treat me like nothin'
So I gave you one last chance
Now all I wanna do is DANCE
[Verse]
(Aaaaaah, girl)
Guess we had our fun
But now that we're done
I'm just tryna get past the memory of you
You try to be bold
But you're so damn cold
Now that I'm outside your control
You were my queen
You looked so serene
I was so naive
I thought we were simply meant to be
Now clearly I see
That I've got to pay
(But you'll still hear when I say)
[Chorus]
You stepped on my heart for the last time
It's time to go my own way
Get you off my mind
You treat me like nothin'
So I gave you one last chance
[Bridge]
Baby, though I said we're through
All I think about is you
Should have thought this through
When the love was true
There's still hope for me and you
Baby, don't give up this fast
We could make this last
And we could put the past
In the past
We could stop all of this fighting~
(BUST IT)
[Rap]
No more o' your weak stuff up in this humpy-bumpy
But I hope that you still will allow me to bump thee
Kickin' it, baby! The stereo's pumpin'!
Spin it for your friends and get the whole place jumpin'
I'm FUNK'N you
Man, I doowutchyalike
Walked in like a pimp, 'cuz I'm magic on the mic
We're gettin' STUPID.
Got the time? Pandemonium!
I gas on the mic when I step up to the podium
I don't front, now, baby, DON'T BE CRUEL
To a lyrical gangsta of the old school
I'm cooler than cool, matta fact, I get RIDICKALUS
And when I bust a funky rhyme, you know that I get sick with this
Stick to this deliciousness
So get down with my sick-a-ness
My viciousness malicious, I'm ridiculous quick-witted
This ain't G funk, we're on a whole new level!
(THE RHYTHM IS THE BASS AND THE BASS IS THE TREBLE)
New fool in town, got nothin' to lose
Got a dope-ass fade and two hunnid dolla shoes
Heated when I'm callin' dudes OUT LIKE CHUMPS
Let the beats bang and I let the bass bump
I never start static and I'm all about style
In the dictionary, I'm the definition of fly
Stay calm while I pull ya fools outta this trance
I'm steppin' out
All I wanna do is dance
[Guitar solo]
[Verse]
This feeling in me
I'm starting to see
I've finally broke free
I'm learning to live life without you
No longer torn in two
And after today
(You'll still hear me say)
[Chorus]
You stepped on my heart for the last time
It's time to go my own way
Get you off my mind
You treat me like nothin'
So I gave you one last chance
Now all... (yeah-eyah-aay!)
[Chorus]
You stepped on my heart for the last time
(Go! Go! Go! Go!) [x7]
It's time to go my own way
Get you off my mind
You treat me like nothin'
So I gave you one last chance
Now all I wanna do is dance
