Arranging the music of one song...
"Spring Yard Zone"
Primary Game: Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega , 1991, GEN), music by Masato NakamuraPosted 2018-01-24, evaluated by the judges panel
- Q: How much SANIC jazz/funk is TOO much?
- A: What are you even TALKING about?
Following the big bang of Bowlerhat's big band Sonic 3 jam from yesterday comes not one but TWO Sonic funk/jam masterpieces from Leandro Abreu & company; we lead with a crisp, funky sextet taking on "Spring Yard Zone" with monster bass, crunchy drums, shiny brass, luscious EP, and searing guitar. The studio chops, they are killer - Leandro writes:
"I would submit some new remixes. There are two songs, Spring Yard Zone from Sonic 1 (Mega Drive), and Chrome Gadget from Sonic 3 (Mega Drive). These two songs I invited others friends to record. The only member of Abreu Project is the trombonist, André Pastore. I intend to make an EP with only guests musicians."
Spring Yard Zone:
- Guitar, Arrangement - Leandro Abreu
- Bass - Leo Quintão
- Drums - Helton Lima
- Trumpet - Marco Lima
- Bass Trombone - André Pastore
- Keyboard - Thiago Quintino
This was basically a no-brainer for the judges, save for the exaggerated panning in the original submission, which DragonAvenger identified early on:
"This is pretty sick, playing is casual and fun, the arrangement is on point. The ONLY problem I have is the hard panning on the instruments. It definitely sounds a little weird on headphones due to it. I'm cool with giving this a pass, but it might be worth to go conditional to see if we can soften that up a bit. Let's see what the other J's think."
The other judges agreed, but it wasn't an issue since Leandro tweaked it a bit - good, since everything else is firing on all cylinders and sounds amazing. As Deia mentions, there's a casual/fun vibe going on, but that comes with practice, time, & talent. The arrangement makes excellent use of the players' respective abilities, everything blends nicely, and you've got a funky, clean, & polished machine; no nits to pick, after the panning fix - enjoy!

So freakin cool. If Sonic 1 ever got remade, this needs to be on the soundtrack. I like the little improv section too

Wow. Groovy, smooth, funky. Gonna need to add this to my travel playlist, because I could listen to this all day.
