Our first featured ReMix of Christopher Larkin's score to Hollow Knight comes again from Rebecca E. Tripp, following yesterday's Secret of Mana opus with a dark, enchanted atmosphere filled with bells, drones, harp, mystery, & myriad plucked textures:
"I recently discovered the game Hollow Knight and I'm really enjoying what I've heard of the OST! Greenpath was one of the most enchanting levels I've seen in basically anything! I decided to take a slightly more minimal approach to this piece since the original is so busy and lush. :) I pictured a kind of serene, vibrant, walled up garden where people rest in contemplation, drinking tea and wearing both Victorian-esque and Indian style clothing and patterns. I hope this sounds warm, fresh, muggy, and glistening. ^_^ The original track was composed by Christopher Larkin.
This song was mixed/mastered by Gabriel Tripp. My brother helped me to mix this, so if it gets accepted, please credit him too. ^^"
Those Talented Tripps :) The mastering does differentiate this from Rebecca's other work and gives it a wider dynamic range & presence; not sure if the same approach would work as well for her other material, but here it helps create a darker, more immediate sense of space due to bumped levels & compression. Extensive use of drones and what sounds like a dulcimer gives this an exotic flavor; it's less narrative and more about setting an enveloping, pervasive vibe. Chimpazilla writes:
"The mixing is definitely more bold here than usual, which I think is a step in the right direction. The glock is a tad on the loud side. I love the drone. Another very well done piece!"
Great to see & hear more modern game soundtracks getting some attention, and I like that Rebecca did something different with this track and looped her brother in; the game & OST are distinct from where she usually focuses, and it makes sense that this ReMix is similarly distinguished. Transporting, vivid stuff!

That drone was living rent free in my cranium. This is one of those multi-faceted remixes that is somehow both calming and unnerving. It has a mystical peaceful soundscape with some trepidatious undertones. Excellent job on this remix! :)

Having just completed Hollow Knight this hits home for me! I've been looking forward to more of Rebecca's work since adding Tales of Phantasia "Magical Forest Medley" to my playlist.
