Arranging the music of one song...
"Gwyn, Lord of Cinder"
Primary Game: Dark Souls (Namco Bandai Games , 2011, PS3), music by Motoi SakurabaPosted 2019-05-09, evaluated by Gario
Stacatto, legato, tremolo, pizzicato, sottocenere al tartufo, marcato, sul ponticello... only one of these is a truffle-infused, ash-covered cheese. The rest may or may not show up in this Dark Souls chamber arrangement for five cellos by Ophanin (Mathieu Deltour), which follows JohnStacy's eight-horned Chrono Trigger piece. It's a good week for closed consorts:
"Here's my remix of "Lord of Cinder" with 5 cellos, my tribute to Dark Souls, because the cello is the best way to transcribe the melancholy and the poetic of this game. I've made it with rich harmony and little variations of the original melody. Hope you'll like it. Best regards!"
Very cool, dramatic, and immediate, and uses a considerable spectrum of what the instrument can do, including some percussion bits, as Gario notes:
"Holy crap, this is gorgeous. Rich harmonies, recognizable handling of the source (particularly the melody), solid performances. This arrangement goes through the gamut of what a cello is capable of, having a great emotive range and utilizing some great techniques to keep things interesting. Great use of tremolo and pizzicato... and are those harmonics at 3:10? Very tasteful, and very well executed - those aren't easy to keep in tune. Great work!"
As a bonus, you've got a Twin Peaks-referencing title, and as a go-to piece for illustrating the texture & role of different string articulations, you could do worse. Beyond that, the piece sets a tone both suspenseful and solemn, never moving too much for too long, varying both intensity and rhythm/pulse. Distinct, striking, and an excellent homage to the darkened catacombs of the game!

This reminds me of the Game of Thrones soundtrack, and that's a big compliment! This was delightfully intense in some areas, very good use of the tremolo strings. I loved the meanering strings that played with the chords and key starting around 1:34. Great job on this!

This is a gorgeous arrangement.
Also, excellent reference in the title, since this piece could easily fit right in on one of the Twin Peaks soundtracks.

Through the darkness of future's past,
The magician longs to see.
One chants out between two worlds...
"Fire Fade with Me."
