Arranging the music of one song...
"Boss Battle"
Primary Game: Jet Force Gemini (Rare , 1999, N64), music by Alistair Lindsay, Graeme Norgate, Robin BeanlandPosted 2021-06-22, evaluated by Liontamer
More from Jet Force Gemini: Mizar Attacks!, as PirateCrab (Daniel Woodyer) takes on the "Boss Battle" theme with a raging, intergalactic wallop of symphonic metal:
"I immediately knew I had to turn this into metal the moment I heard the opening melody. I instantly had a ton of groove ideas in my head and just had to give it the special sauce. Chug chug!"
Love the alternating pan on the intro guitar licks, almost like a call-and-answer with... itself. There's a searing solo circa 1'35" that melts face (and continues some of the panning jumps), and while this is first & foremost a bangin' metal track, the symphonic/orchestral elements are excellent, varied, and he even works in a flute trill run at 2'22", plus some nice choral touches. And of course, big ending with drum rolls & triumphant ending stab = fire. It's just over three minutes long, but since you're traveling at light speed & having your face melted off in the process, at the end you'll be at least a month older ;) Liontamer evaluated:
"Respect to Daniel for taking Robin Beanland's chaotic original piece and ratcheting it up, all while smoothing out the time signature to 4/4 so that a non-musical neophyte like me can actually follow along with it. Everything PirateCrab touches turns into INTENSITY!"
The JFG OST is, at least in my estimation, one of the more challenging soundtracks to arrange, so props to ALL mixers who contributed to Mizar Attacks! for turning in some creative, visionary stuff. We talk about this from time to time, but symphonic rock/metal is one of the trickier hybrids to produce; mixing/mastering either genre independently is hard enough, but things get cluttered FAST when you combine them. PirateCrab somehow avoids that pitfall while still writing some pretty elaborate orchestral accompaniment for all those chugs & that mean, sinister lead guitar. The result is galvanized, high-octane, epic symphonic battle metal that truly conveys the existential, planetary stakes. Badass stuff from PC, and another superb selection from Mizar Attacks!
