Newcomer LXE (Alexis Gelinas) brings us a spicy but chilled take on the Koopa Junior BGM music from Super Mario World! LXE set this one up like a date with Christina Applegate at a club, saying "Jazz flute? I dabble..." A very loose and carefree flute floats over the top of the bass and piano accompaniment, with slick hand percussion including güiro! Judge Emunator notes:
"Hahaha, I was struggling to figure out what source this was at first, but once the lead flute came in, it was such an epiphany. That's actually genius, I don't know how you came up with this. Really brilliant adaptation. The backing instrumentation ranges from serviceable (the piano) to pretty darn good (the drums). At the end of the day though, the lead flute really sells this concept..."
I had the same reaction on my first listening, once the flute flies in, it was apparent to me what the source was. On a subsequent pass, I was able to more carefully discern how the bass comes from the original with a modified rhythm suitable to the style, and chords comping in on occasional beats to fill in the space with a jazzy and Latin feel. Judges had some issues with blocky piano chords and fade-in and fade-out but were swayed by expressive flute performance, including prophetik music:
"fun idea for a remix. the fade-in wasn't my favorite and the initial piano is indeed blocky (try reducing the sustain on faster passages to get a cleaner and tighter sound). flute sounds fantastic, the off-beat stuff at 0:47 is great. some nice drum fills around the 1:10 mark. the original's melody isn't particularly over-memorable but you do a nice job of picking up what makes it unique and relaying it. i certainly wasn't a huge fan of the fadeout with all the clear rhythmic content you had going on.
the overblown sections sound fine. i think at least in the later one there's some vocal content in the flute tone or at least some flutter, which is why it sounds a little weird. it's just because the sound comes out of the instrument differently when you don't focus the airstream at the tone hole the same way.
this is a neat idea, subpar start/end aside. great playing."
I agree, the flute performance is fantastic and really showcases some of the lesser used techniques in this performance. Minor execution improvements aside, this is a fun Latin jazz-filled debut entry with lots of creativity, and all packed into a neat little package.

What a fun romp! A nice pleasant remix that would work great as some lobby music :D Definitely a unique take on the source!

What an interesting and nice take on the boss theme from SMW. The latin flavor really shines through and the piano sounded great, same as the flute. Small nitpick on a weird bit of flute playing two-thirds of the way in, but nothing that completely soured me on this one.
