As much as I enjoy going out to conventions, it's also great to be home! When I arrived home from VGM CON and my daughter uncovered a handmade Vulpix plush by DragonAvenger, I definitely scored all-important dad points. :-D That wasn't the only cool thing to be found at the convention; the great music was flowing and I saw elenty billion OC ReMixers in person. One person we'd love to eventually have at one of these gathering is Brazilian arranger & performer tibonev, but we'll have to settle for tibonev's mellow rock rendition of EarthBound's classic Twoson theme, replete with electronic influences to keep you guessing, according to the artist:
"This was originally arranged for Pixel Mixers' EarthBound album, PM Rockin'. My idea behind the arrangement was to make it a fun, bouncy, clearly 80s-inspired version, but implementing different elements, like clean electric guitars, distorted lead guitars, lots of synths (backing and bass, for instance), basically making something that on parts wouldn't be out of place in a club in Europe in 1987, but also, sounding unique enough to be completely out of place in that same environment.
The name means "For Sale", because I always found it funny that you can buy a "for sale" sign in the town of Twoson. Also, it ends up being a shallow reference to The Beatles, which influenced the original OST."
An initial rejection had tibone revisit things, and he showed up in spades by re-recording and re-balancing several parts, as well as minorly updating some of the writing, and now it's shining that much brighter. After being self-admittedly "flip-floppy" the first go-around, judge prophetik music was successfully converted thanks to tibonev's improvements:
"opens with some spacey stabs and eventually a nice meaty bass tone. melody comes in on the guitar at 0:41 [...] and then is passed to the lead synth with some rhythm guitar underneath. the first break hits at 1:22 and i especially like the tone of autopanning arp here. there's one more short recap of the melody in a middle voice at 2:02 [...] and then we get some guitar solo work. there's a bit of a bridge which works well to mix it up a bit, and then some more handing off of the melodic content before some outro content [...].
i think this is a lot more cohesive of a package this time around. the variety of drums especially really helps each section take on a voice of its own, and the 'fixed' chord elements allow the track to speak cleaner."
I too enjoyed the transition at 1:20 to just the melody, later accompanied by some cool countermelodic wackiness over the top of it. I appreciated tibone's sound design and instrumentation changes for a constant playing around with the textures. The mixing felt cohesive the whole way through, even stronger this time around, and let's not forget the handdrums at 2:09 providing a noticeable Yoshi/Super Mario World energy, a nice Easter egg if that's a part of your nostalgia backpack. :-) A much different take on "Boy Meets Girl" than both djpretzel's folk journey and Steven Melin's traditional piano, the way this rocks out feels like the soundtrack to an innocent 1980s teen romance/coming-of-age flick. Nice work from tibone, who I'm sure is "for sale" if you want to hire him for your high-quality gaming projects! ;-)
