As a franchise, Goemon's criminally overlooked on this side of the pond when it comes to its incredibly catchy soundtracks, so it's a shame that the album concept didn't take off for the project this ReMix was intended to be a part of. That said, before we even get to this one, you owe it to yourself to scope out the other series coverage we've previously enjoyed for some funky fresh stuff, whether it's from Palpable, Red Tailed Fox, or jnWake, because now joining that lineup, we've got timaeus222 giving Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon's temple castle theme a funk-filled glow-up! timaeus put this together back in his more studious days, as he also enjoyed being (vicariously) athletic in his downtime:
"Who says ninja warriors don't have time to relax? Goemon apparently does! To celebrate the new season of American Ninja Warrior 2016 (premiered June 1), I told myself to finish this funky, atmospheric ReMix! I think you can tell, but one of the particularly exciting parts to write was the aux percussion. If you listen closely, besides the congas/bongos, you can find some snaps (and spoons), rides, and thips (EX: 1:06, 2:15)... and rimshots for good measure (2:32-2:44). There were also some neat behind-the-scenes stuff:
- The funk keys synth was gated to create a "choppy" feel while still retaining a reverb tail
- There's an "electrical" bass synth backing up the... actual electric bass. Both of which were a blast to write.
- I thought of 2:15-2:44 while in my lab doing some programming work for computational chemistry research. By the way, it worked out pretty well... turned into a paper. :)Now, I don't personally know Goemon (who does?), but he sure throws one mean beach party!"
Never let it be said that timaeus ain't a brainiac; we're just thankful he puts those intellectual impulses to good use both inside and outside of our community! The word "atmospheric" was floated by the ReMixer here, and you're there with the dropoff of the beats at 1:41, with dark synths paving the way for hand perc and crystalline piano until 2:14. I was equally impressed with the very gradual rebound back into the funk as things slowly filled in further from 2:15, messing with the time sig and shifting toward a chippy lead at 2:44, with excellent supporting writing making that last push into higher energy at 3:01. Judge Gario was swept up in timaeus's textures, awarding full style AND authenticity points:
"Nice change in style, source is easily recognizable, production is impeccable. I'm loving how the synths balance with the percussion, and the aesthetic just screams 'Goeman' while giving the source a complete makeover.
Can't say too much about it other than praising it, so I guess I'll do just that."
Ah, the good ole "nothin' bad to say"; you love to see it, and it's the triple truth! :-) I've got a twinge of regret that timaeus isn't a full-time musician, because with the experimentation, creativity, and catchiness he consistently brings to the dance, the world's only missing out on more & more hits like this that get the body movin' and groovin'. You'll just have to explore timaeus222's catalog for even more upbeat jams (AND other low-key gems)!

Oh man, this was a blast to write for sure! I think I spent the leisurely year to write this, actually. I definitely had to take my time to get the treble mixing just right amongst all the aux percussion, the "electrical" bass, and electric bass all potentially competing!
