Argle's been back in the zone lately, and he's been pretty productive! But before we eventually get into his newest works, he's got an oldie-but-goodie that actually let's us celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.! From our Super Mario RPG: Window to the Stars album, Argle adds reggae flavor to Yoko Shimomura's arranged version of the legendary Mario overworld theme! Argle felt like he had some explain' to do:
"Is there, like, a statute of limitations on incredibly old tracks? If so, I apologize for wasting your time. So, yeah, I don't actually know why I never sent in this back in the day. Felt weird to send two songs from the same OCR album, I guess? That's a stupid reason, LOL.
Anyway, I'm getting back into the swing of things after a really long dry spell and figured I'd toss this one out there. It's a reggae dub version of the file theme, which is itself just a take on the classic Mario theme. And I'll be damned but I actually have a WAVE file from the distant past! That's good 'cuz there's a zero percent chance I could open the project now without a ton of missing VSTs. All in all, is this a low-effort way to get the Argle name back out there? Who can say?"
For the record, there's no statute of limitations for submitting something to OCR, send in all the album tracks you want, and, no, it doesn't waste our time, so please submit your older VGM arrangements, all of you VGM arrangers out there -- back catalog material's ALWAYS welcome. Be like Argle and shake the cobwebs off! :-) Panelist prophetik music provided his pleasing play-by-play:
"opens with a very percussive electric and some bass, and a SUPER loud drumset comes in right away.
the chord progression from the original starts at about 0:19, and the melodic content comes in at 0:33. there's a bit of a transition at 1:12, and we get a recap with a bit more personalization. [...] 1:55 is a break section, and there's some interesting bits and bobs in this section as it builds back up.
2:21's a great recap, probably one of my favorite parts of the track. there's a lot of fun stuff going on, and more personalization in this section than anywhere else. a short outro and it's done. [...]
i think there's some charm in this one that isn't immediately obvious - there's a lot of creativity in the melodic approach especially near the end, and i really like the overall shape of the track and how it gets where it's trying to go. the natural feel of most tracks from this OST is just so genuine, and you don't get in the way of that."
Musical earnestness wins out! proph's dead on about this sounding like an agreeably authentic half-step from the feel of the original Mario RPG music, beaming with positivity all while staying pretty chill. Fellow judge Hemophiliac gave his nod to Argle's anxiety-reducing approach: "The personalization is there throughout the track, it's just subtle. People will enjoy this for being simple and it still feeling a lot like the source tune. [...] It's a fun little track", while paradiddlesjosh swoped down [sic] to comfortably close our vote: "Short, sweet, lots of fun, really dig the play on expectations with the ends of the melodic phrases." Co-signed in triplicate by the judges, this one's indeed fun, as well as catchy, groovy, and calming, so kick back and relax with Argle's arrangement of an arrangement! "Don't call it a comeback?" No, please do, as Argle's got a handful of diverse ReMixes in the hopper that also we're excited for you to hear. The man's full of range, and we're glad his talented takes are back in the saddle, ready to go -- stay tuned! :-)
