Wizards & Warriors

DJ Crono proves that his initial, unique + excellent (even if the rapping wasn't him) Final Fantasy 6 debut ReMix wasn't just a fluke with this excellent follow up from Wizards & Warriors. This is the oft-mixed main theme, so expectations were already riding high in my mind as we've seen several quality iterations of this theme over the years. Fortunately, Crono's is distinct enough to carve its own niche - actually "distinct" may be an understatement as - love it or leave it - Dj Crono himself raps to original lyrics . . . in Japanese. Now that there's something you don't see every day. The vocals are mixed a little loud, but to me it was passable and mad props for even attempting something of this nature have to be given. Check out the lyrics + translation to see what's what. On to the music - LOVE the bassline here: elastic saw overtop a pounding house beat, extensive vocal samples in addition to the actual rapping (which is actually layered with singing too, btw), monoglide and thin, isolated piano, with lots of other synth textures and rhythmic vices appearing, and some brief solos as well. I think you have to get into the general atmosphere of being slighty goofy (i.e. the shouts of "DJ Crono!!" and the "Give it to me" bits) and just having a lot of fun to appreciate the entire package, but the music itself is on the level. Crono is definitely doing his own thing, in more ways than one, and I think that's great, esp. for source material like this and his FF6 Terra mix, which are both songs that have been covered up and down and (arguably) don't need "yet another techno" mix. I don't know, this'll probably be a love-it hate-it mix for a lot of people, but I had fun with it and I think the lyrics are pretty dern respectable. Recommended, if you've read this far and are still on board :)

I actually played a little bit of Wizards and Warriors this past weekend, so this is certainly timely. The theme is a good one, but all the voices grate on me, and not in the cool "housethe" way. :/
Sorry dude, you are a talented mixer, but this one didn't work for me.

My #1 guilty-pleasure mix. My favorite mix to run to. This song was playing in its full bass-heavy glory when my upstairs neighbor banged on my ceiling and screamed "people are trying to sleep, here!" It was 9am, he should have been goddamned awake, and this song is goddamned awesome.
Congrats to Jovette on his work outside of OCR!

This is for anyone who is interested in JPOP.
Japan's #1 boy band, KAT-TUN, is releasing their new album "Break the Records - by you & for you -" this month on the 29th.
I wrote the bonus track for this album. My song is entitled "MOON", it's track 16. It's a heavy metal / classic Japanese shamisen song.
You can hear the "leaked" version of my song here (if you're interested)

And for those interested in purchasing the album itself, here are some helpful links. It's on pre-order now.

this song doesn't work very well for me. It becomes very repetitive (and calling this a style doesn't change that) and the voices aren't really fit for either amusement or serious song support. Unfortunately, they get increasingly important as the track develops- which it actually does the way it is supposed to (that is, by switching parts of a loop on and off and adding new things once in a while). At around 2:20, when multi-layered voices set in, the weakest part reveals since the parallel singers fail to make a unity, so it feels like a croud of drunk party people. Well, that might be intended :< but sober it's not much of a treat.

This would be a hit at a karaoke with one's friends. Funnier if lyrics are displayed in hiragana or katakana, with some kanji.

I liked this mix, but only after half of it was over. I'd definitely have it as a favorite if i didnt have to listen to the first half of the song. There's only so many times I can hear give it to me before I start flippin out. Great mix though, the lyrics at the end rock.

I LOVE U, DJ Crono!! ^_^ All your ReMixes are awesome! :o This is in the top ten of my OC ReMixes :D But maybe... the lyrics start a bit late.. but just a LITTLE!! I love J-Pop too, and VGM with lyrics. I've never play da game, but it matters? of course NOT. I really enjoy with this ReMix, and........hey, that's sound like a DDR (Dance Dance Revoltion or Dancing Stage) song, isn't it??

... how about the next time you decide to write a song in a different language, you make sure you speak it first? that's always a good idea, don't you think? on some of these parts, the translation isn't even close! stick to your native language, sweetie, until you become fluent in others.

I can't get the lyrics to work, either. I get bits and pieces of the lyrics, but not enough to make much sense. Kono Sekai De, I think means 'this world' or 'of this world'. I'm a little rusty, and I haven't had much practice, though. Lyrics or not, I like it. Good beat, good mood. Good Stuff.

First, let me say that, since I can't get the lyrics link to work, I have no idea what he's saying.
Nevertheless, this song has single-handedly made me into a DJ Chrono fan, almost specifically for the originality (Like the "DJ Chrono!" shouts).
I was surprised that one could do something so original and fresh with such a simple theme. True, OC Remix has seen several choice renditions of this piece, but most of them lack the sheer unconventionality of this remix, which is why I adore it with all my heart.
There's so much to say that I can't make up my mind what to write, so I should probably just stop right now.
Stellar work, Chrono. Keep the foreign language tracks coming.

Very cool remix. I've never played the game, so I wouldn't've heard it had not a friend sent me the mp3 and demanded I listen to it.
To me at least, the parts of the song with lyrics sounded very much like a Korean style, like what you'd hear on games like Pump It Up. This isn't a bad thing, but it just amused me to no end to hear Japanese lyrics with a style that I normally associate with Korean songs.
