Phantasy Star

It might be brief, but it's Phantasy Star and it's analoq and for some of you, that's all you'll need to know :) This is a shortish, two-and-a-half minute techno jam piece that just exudes attitude. It may not vary all that much, but it's short so this isn't exacerbated by several iterations. Introing with a great, delayed, effected sync synth, then bringing in gradually some piano and pads, things kick in with a tasty acoustic drum pattern that's got a touch of funk to it, alongst with a tres nice lead synth that pulls off some crafty delay tricks (clue: listen to the trail and how it pans across and comes right back in) and ties everything together. Sorta has a sneaky, James-Bondish "spy" feel to it, with the chord progression and what not. A wah guitar comes in towards the end with a little riff that well complements the lead synth, and things end appropriately with a delay trail. Good example of a shorter mix that nevertheless takes a quality, brief theme and gives it a good makeover. Great to see some material from the original Phantasy Star getting such treatment, too. Recommended.

It's all about the synths (isn't it always, though). Nice driving beat and some super energetic arranging has made a very danceable and poppy song out of what I thought was a pretty dull original.
This is a pure celebration of fun and funk with an addictive quality to it. Amazing instrument selection and variation injected into the sequencing. High marks go to the fact that the groundwork for this was done in a day. Seriously good stuff.

Great stuff, extremely addicting and catchy beat. Although i've only played Phantasy Star 2,3,4. I can't really say i know the source material...but does it really matter when this mix kicks ass? Only thing i gotta say is, and in no way whatsoever is it a knock on da mix, but the tune doesn't resemble your sterotypical underground/dungeon music... all in all, worth a listen and more!

:D This OCReMix is extremely catchy and fun (as are many others from analoq). All of the effects are great and everything goes together perfectly.
And it may be short, but that's why we have repeat for awesome OCReMixes like this one. One of my favorites.

Want a Fanta? OK.
It began very dark, but it got a little lighter when the piano decided to sneak in. Since this is a remix of the Boss dungeon theme, I expected that it would be something like this, but when the other lead synth came in at 0:38 it just turned the table up-side-down and gave this arrangement a completely new style. I like it, I want it, and now I have it. Awesome remix analoq! B)

Hoi mi goish, one of my top 10 fav songs. Wish it was longer, It's addictive for me. Have to listen like 3 times a row before I'm satesfyed to change to another song. X3
Reminds me of Daft Punk techno.
Gawesome Remix. :3

this is awesome
from the name i thought it would be some faster, louder, harder dance type song but turns out its not
this is really good, although its a bit short
great job, analoq!

I was talking to analoq on IRC the other day, and I asked him what I should listen to that he remixed. This is what he pointed me to. GREAT choice. Man, as was said already, my head was bobbing up and down the entire time. I've been finding some really good stuff on OCR the longer and farther I dig.

Heh, the intro vocoder reminds me of this one scene from Scary Movie 3... Anyway. I really like this mix, and I like all of your other mixes too, I just didn't realize it until I sorted my playlist by artist. :)
This has a nice, electronic feel to it. A good download for anyone who likes this kind of stuff.

Greetings,
Just wanted to say that I put this track on my iRiver, and it has gotten more playtime than any of the other 56 songs. Incredibly funky, and much like the situation where you go to comment on how sound your cousins newborn baby is sleeping and you realize that it is the definition of the phrase "sleeping like a baby", so is this track "music to my ears". One doesn't even have to like Phantasy Star or know what ocremix is, as shown by several of my friends (one a hip-hop DJ) who also enjoyed it very much. Great Stuff!
Sincerely,
TastEPlasma

I really like this one. I recently downloaded most of the ReMixes on the site (just before the damned torrent file, too...), but I hadn't listened to this one yet because I'd never played Phantasy Star before.
ranting
Well, a week or so ago, I was at my boyfriend's house and we were playing it. It was on an emulator :( My initial reaction was "Holy f*** this kicks Nintendo's ass!" And so I've been playing it for the past week with a passion.
Could someone please tell me how they made those dungeon tunnel things...? I still don't get it.
So...with my hard drive beginning to get a bit cluttered, I decided to put all OCReMixes on 6 CDs. While organizing them, I was trying to decide which Mixes I should keep on my hard drive to listen to on a regular basis.
Since I started playing Phantasy Star and never heard this Mix, I thought I'd better give it a go.

Anyway, back to the actual 'review'...
Generally, I'm not a fan of fun-kay music unless I'm watching 70s black-sploitation films, but wow this ReMix is an exception.
Everything just seems to fit. The synth strings, e-piano, bass, the lead...thing all work really well together. Without hearing this mix, I'd never think those instruments could complement each other so well. I love the lead...whatever the heck it is...über-distorted guitar.
The drums are just great. The percussion is really what makes the song as good as it is.
Someone, maybe DJP in his write-up, said the mix was short. Perhaps in comparison with the rest of analoq's mixes it's short, but I think it's a good length for the song, personally. Erm...actually the "Medusa" VGM file is the exact same length as the mix, therefore it fits (<=corrupted Lauren logic) ^_^
Plus, there would be too much repetition in the mix if it were any longer, unless a break were added in or somethin'.
Hm...I don't quite think it's as particularly good as some of analoq's other work, though, since the mix gets a bit repetative after a while. I mean after several listenings, not one time around. 10 times repeatedly would be a bit much for me, but to each his own ^_^
It doesn't lose its groove, though.
I still have yet to play far enough into the game to hear where this music is, so I don't have an area association for the song yet...I have the VGMs, though. Am I mistaken, or is the intro supposed to resemble the "Cave" music? I know the actual song is the "Medusa" VGM, but I can't put my finger on the intro...
Since my overall message is rather convoluted, I'll revert to the ol' ?/10 grading method.
This mix is a 7.5/10
The only downsides from my point of view are the ending and the repetative nature of the piece. Both of those things are probably a matter of my own tastes, though, since I can't really provide any reasoning to back up either statement. :?

Yes, this is an oh-so-happy and funky version of the Phantasy Star Dungeon theme. The resemblance is there, but I'll be damned if analoq didn't do a good job of covering up the mood of the original and setting his own touch to the piece. One my favorites ;)

- KyleJCrb on October 17, 2003
I seem to recall that it was supposed to be the Phantasy Star dungeon theme. I can kind of hear the resemblance...
Anyway, this ReMix is a little on the short side, but oh so much on the sweet side. I really hope to see more of your other stuff show up on OCR (Sonik Metro, in particular). Nice work, analoq. :)

Maybe I missed something, but could someone tell me what phantasy star song this is? I beat it fairly recently (beat it a few months ago on GBA in Phantasy Star Collection), but I don't remember this track.

- DJ D-Rek on May 1, 2003
Heh...hearing this song brings back memories...Phantasy Star was the first RPG I ever played, and it's still one of the best, in my book. This ReMix certainly does honor the memory :D. It is Greatness with a capital G. It's catchy, well-played and overall a very enjoyable melody.
Aaaah...just closing my eyes when listening to Wanta Phanta gets my mind to exploring dark caves, fighting Owlbears and Werebats, and finding cake shops in the middle of those same dark caves :).

If there was a 'Best of OCR' album, this- with no doubt- would be on it.
Need I say more?
