The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

"I spent a fair deal of time mixing this track while at work. So I kinda like got paid to make this remix. At 0:50 I am tributing beej's "Fragments of Gold", because it's like one of the best remixes EVAR"

A one-hit wonder (to date), but a wonder indeed; going back and listening to that mix (from 2002) and also reading Drew's comments on the thread, it definitely all clicks and makes sense that it influenced him, given the style & overall aesthetic. halc's first mix of 2010 brings us our first coverage of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures for the GameCube, although the source is basically LttP. Lovely chip drums blend with some chippish and less chippish synth textures as well as strings and flute, after lofi organ intros into the familiar 'Dark World' theme. I especially like that Mr. Wheeler plays with tempo a lot, and the descent-into-static ending is nice. It's not just white noise, it's specifically the type of static you get when something's breaking up... interesting, glitchy effect that actually confused me the first time around. CHz writes:

"Arrangement mostly takes the expansive approach, but it checks out. The melody and chords are changed in a few places, the slow section is good, and there's a lot of original material in there. Pretty close, but I'm okay with it. Production is pretty crisp, not a whole lot to complain about. The flute does get a little lost in the synths in the louder sections, though it's not so bad, and the overall sound of those sections is nice. I liked it."

Panel agreed it was a good, solid mix - not necessarily halc's most innovative or best-produced track to date, but definitely up to his high standards and embodying the trademark elements of his sound, effectively mixing chip and other textures into enjoyable sonic chimeras.

I started playing the track, opened the review thread, and happened to read this comment right around 0:15, when a chippy percussive swipe sound comes in. Now I'm picturing Links slicing up tufts of grass to the beat.
Nice use of LttP strings. And you called this a Four Swords Adventures remix. :whatevaa:
The FSA-based flourishes are cool, though, and the remix does have a decidedly frosty feel. Looks like I forgot to download this when it came out, but that will be remedied.

I know what you mean! Something about the background arpeggios screams Kirby.
Great mix!

The first 13 or so seconds remind me of F-Zero.
Other than that, this is another very enjoyable mix by halc. His remixes always make me smile.

I know the tune, but I've never played the game...
And the remix...
It's just...
Wow.
I loved it from the second I heard it.
Great job! 5/5

lol.
Anyway... mix.
I love the touch of the lttp string sample in the intro.
So... this is basically dark world.
I don't think this sounds as clear as some of your other mixes in terms of mixing this time - its a little murky, but so slightly, I think some of the backing strings might be a little loud at times, sometimes I feel the leads get slightly lost.
That said, arrangement is tight, and it does sound great despite what I said above.
Willrock likey ^-^

This is a pretty straightforward take on the ALttP songs (I take it that a variation on them is found on the Gamecube title) in some ways. The melody is pretty much left untouched, and the instrumentation is where the creativity is found.
Nice nifty song!

Great stuff Halc. My favourite part is 0:35 to 0:50 other than that you seem to never disappoint me.

Wow. This reminds me a lot of Sonic Advance (1), it kind of has that feel to it, lots of liberal use of the plain 'ole Square wave that gives retro games so much of their feel.
Fun piece, I really enjoyed it. I need to go hear it with Bass now, these speakers kind of suck. ^_^ It's shorter than a lot of my collection, but that's a good thing-- it doesn't have enough time to get old or boring.

I kid, I kid. Put it this way, I knew I was gunna like it so much that I just downloaded it before previewing it. Love the Zelda 3 strings- retro awesome. Production is fantastic as always. Mix = win.

Another great mix, halc! The more I hear of your style, the better it gets I think and the more I like it.
