  1. Please don't get discouraged from remixing because of some negative, though constructive feedback. Believe me when I say I've heard a LOT worse than this and I can see you have definitely potential for improvement. The problem wasn't any inherent lack of musicality or talent, it's just that, as you have stated yourself, you can't do a lot with the rest of the source to fit your style, which really isn't your fault but rather because of the source/style you chose. Don't give up :)

Well, since we're on the topic... I've been at "this level" of musical composition/talent for a couple years now, and haven't been improving. Almost all of my projects end up like this one - I get a good idea, write something, and it ends up being about 30 seconds of actual "material". And then I get stuck. Usually it goes in the "work" folder and never gets touched again, but sometimes I decide to repeat things and change things to try and get length and variety out of it.

Sorry to just gush out like this, but this isn't, well, the first time I've gotten discouraged with music. I think part of the problem is that I happen to really like very deep, thick chords and part layering, with subtle changes, but I think I'm the only one.

But thanks for the encouragement, guys. You probably still won't ever see WIP #2 of this, but I still appreciate the listens.

  2. Thanks for the listens, guys.

Yeah, it is really repetitive. I just didn't really know where else to go or what to do with the song. The rest of the original piece doesn't really... fit, to me.

Ah well. You probably won't hear a WIP #2 of this piece... I just don't think I have the skills to do decent remixes.

I guess I can go back to listening to Fire Field from the Brawl soundtrack on repeat and wishing I was that good...

    P.S. I just realized I typed Touhou 5 in the title, not 6. Do'h!

  3. Hello all,

I'm a big fan of the Touhou series of games - the music in particular. One of my favourite themes has been the theme of Flandre Scarlet from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. (If you don't know it, you've probably heard a, uh, "remix" in the youtube video that's been floating around by the name of "Ronald McDonald insanity" or "Mc Roll'd".) So, I whipped up a progressive electronic...ish piece based on that song. You can find the actual original song here:

Note that this is WIP #1, so it is very rough. And I know the "solo" sounds, uh, not so good.

Also, this is only the "main" section of the song; there's approximately two others that I could include (if need be), but I don't really think they could work well.

    Please, listen and comment!

  4. Downloaded fine for me.

I think your main problem, as far as sounds go, is that your notes are too chaotic. There's no real cohesiveness between one measure to the next. However, within the measures themselves, everything's a little too perfectly on beat. A real orchestra wouldn't sound like this - at the very least things would be ever so slightly out of tune and off beat.

All I can really say is that you need to capture more of the "spirit" of the song. It sounds like you're trying to transcribe it a bit too literally.

    Good luck, and keep going!

  5. Correct me if I'm wrong, here's the source.

    ...

You need more source, I don't think OCR would accept this.

Yup, that's it. I know, it's rather far from the original. I'm not really sure at this point if I can bring it back to where OCR would want it. I kinda just posted it here to get feedback on the mix.

I think the snare is the culprit in your drum problems. Try replacing it with another snare.

    I think you're right. Thanks.

You also need more of a grande finale, or an ending where you're just toning it down - whatever, you need an ending, not just an end. There's also some choppiness you should try to eliminate.

I haven't written the ending yet, so yeah, it definitely needs to change in that respect.

I also didn't get much of a feel of its direction, you might want to work on making it sound like it's heading somewhere. It doesn't have to be working up to a big finish, as long as it's heading somewhere.

Well, the problem is that it doesn't really feel like it is going anywhere to me. It almost feels like I've just made a new loop to play in the background of some game. But I'll certainly try.

    But it's enjoyable. Good luck!

    Thanks for listening!

  6. I've been working on this electronic/minimalist (not really)/I don't know what remix of the Phantasy Star 1 Dungeon Theme. In Phantasy Star 4, the track is titled "PS1 Dungeon Arrange 2". However, this song has digressed so far from the original, I can hardly call it a remix anymore - it's more of a completely new song! I'm using a lot of e-piano sounds, changed the key to sound much more major, and chopped up a lot of parts to make new ones. It's a little repetitive, and the drums need work, but that's why I'm posting it here in the WIP boards.

Enjoy, and let me know how I'm doing!

  7. What I got when I downloadded was the same as I got from x-treme games music. Check the file and post again.

Check your internet and download again. The file at http://koiulpoi.googlepages.com/camanis.mp3 is remarkably different from the other one. Perhaps since they're both called "Camanis.mp3" your browser is duplicating one from the cache? There's no way they're the same file at all - I've never been to "x-treme games music".
