It was in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was a two-night charity event to raise money for gaming equipment for the local children's hospital. The first night was an all-ages friendly mini-convention type deal with some local vendors and a Nintendo rep giving out free promotional stuff like posters of recent games while letting people play Mario Kart 8. The Super Guitar Bros. played their set at the end of that.

Night two was in this bar in downtown Grand Rapids called The Pyramid Scheme that's a pretty awesome place, decked out with some interesting pop culture stuff and they've got roughly 20 or so different pinball machines at the front of the building. There they had six other VGM cover groups perform, including OCR-posted Knight of the Round. The other groups, which you may or may not have heard of, were Arc Impulse, Mail Order Monsters, Gimmick!, The Returners (the group Lauren the Flute is a part of), and Playing With Power! (the head of which is the guy who started GR8Bit Live). There was a Street Fighter V tournament earlier that they held the finals for during the event and members of some of the bands played Street Fighter music live during the match. It was a great time.

Wow, I wish I could have been there! Sounds awesome. I wonder if that sort of thing ever pops up near Houston or if I'm just not tuned in enough to catch it.

Curious thing.. compare Janet Jackson's "Together Again" to Bridge Zone from the first 8-bit Sonic. At least I get a kick out of the similarity of the first half of the chorus, with Together Again being from 1997. Was it perhaps picked just because of that, or is this just a happy coincidence? :)

Oh-- oh, you're exactly right! That must be why Bridge Zone sounds so familiar! The Jackson family tree is responsible for all this top-notch Sonic groove!

That was a fun episode guys. I've known of the Materia Collective but not a whole lot about them so this week's interview was particularly nice. I actually met one of the members you guys talked about, Lauren the Flute, last weekend during a VGM cover band concert called GR8Bit Live. Got to hear the Super Guitar Bros. play their Sonic Medley during the event as well.

That was some great lyrical wisdom this week as well.

That's really cool! Where was the concert?

And thanks-- I'm genuinely impressed with the sheer number of clever OCR references Mike was able to sneak in.

  5. Yo guys. I can't make the musics very good yet, but if I can help at all with this album, drop me a line. Obviously we'll cover it on the podcast when the time comes, but my unshakable enthusiasm for Sonic the Hedgehog music demands that I volunteer. If anyone needs feedback or help organizing stuff or what have you, I'm game! And definitely give me a shout before this thing goes live so we can plan for it on the show, hopefully along with an interview. :)

Great episode guys! I enjoyed the conclusion to the OCU interview and was fascinated with Laura Intravia's segment. With how large the Zelda franchise is, I was glad to see that the playlist managed to avoid repeating any one game in the series.

Great job guys! Had a lot of fun listening to the first half of the OCU interview, definitely looking forward to the conclusion of that. Oddly enough, my first time listening to the Spring Break album was also while driving in the car and I also almost finished it by the time I got back home. Andrew really was onto something with that album length apparently.

Thanks, dude! I have another fun car driving music story for a future interview, which I hope will happen before too long. :)

In case you were wondering, these flavors are canon:

Time Crush - Peanut Butter Fudge
DJ Snivy's Smooth Moves - Peaches and Cream
Jin's Tonic - Mint Chocolate Chip
Guitar Dragoon - Cookies and Cream
Wind in Your Hair - Orange Pineapple Sorbet
    Golden Flowers - Caramel Praline
Femmes Fatales - Cherry Chocolate Chunk
    The Witching Hour - Strawberry
    Semper Saltare - Cookie Dough

This makes almost too much sense to me. Time Crush is an intense, undeniably good twist on a classic. Golden Flowers is sweet and satisfying. Wind in Your Hair is tangy and fun. I CAN TASTE THE MUSIC

  12. I haven't had too much time to play it so far, but-- I REALLY LIKE Overwatch. :D Pharah, Lucio, and Winston are my go-to characters so far. I want to add Tracer and D. Va to that list, but I'm honestly pretty bad with those two.

Feel free to add me as well: Emblem180#1675

Any interest in putting together a game night or two? I'd be into playing with some OCR folks, even if our skills levels vary wildly. :P I'm on PC.

I liked it. As much as I do enjoy the interviews with arrangers and composers, it was nice to get a different perspective with this approach. Maybe it's because I can relate to it being a fan of music but not a musician by any stretch of the definition, but I like the idea of just talking about a track or a soundtrack that no one in the interview actually had a hand in making, while still just going into what makes it special or interesting to them. I do think making it shorter and more focused is a good idea, I can see it being the kind of subject that can go off in any number of different tangents that there wouldn't necessarily be time for in the show.

Overall, yeah I think it was great, I'm looking forward to the next one!

Cool, thanks for the feedback! I have a second one recorded which is a little more focused, and I have some ideas for future editions as well.

Excellent show guys, really enjoyed it. Don't worry if you were unprepared, it certainly didn't come across!

Perfect guest for the first ever "No Tune Unturned" section considering the support John's been giving over the years through exposure on Twitch/YouTube and Patreon.

Thought I'd leave my thoughts on the new interview style in case it helps to cement the format. I really liked how the music tied in to what was being discussed at the time, though I struggled to hear a lot of them as they were very quiet under the talking. Perhaps a segment of each could be cut into natural pauses in the conversation, so we get a chance to hear them for a while (30-60 seconds perhaps? Not sure how limited you are on time) before the conversation moves onto another topic. Perhaps a format similar to 'Desert Island Discs' could work here, in which the interviewee introduces a few tracks they picked out and the reasons they chose them.

Just a few ideas. I enjoyed it either way and look forward to seeing how it progresses!

Great point-- more frequent, lengthy music breaks would be helpful since we're not playing an entire song. I like the Desert Island Discs idea, too. Kind of a highlight reel to make sure we get to the good stuff. :) Thanks a lot!

I enjoyed the new episode guys! I like that you're branching out with different types of interviews, adds the right amount of variety to the format of the show. The One-Winged Angel arrangement I submitted in the playlist is even more impressive when you watch the video and see the percussionist in action. The rest of the Symphonic Fantasies encore that plays before it is worth listening to as well.

Thanks, dude! What did you think of the No Tune Unturned interview? We have another one lined up, which I made a little shorter and more focused-- but I like the idea of letting people go on about music they love just for the fun of sharing it. Curious to know if that concept is appealing to anyone else.

And I agree, the One-Winged Angel drum solo loses something without the visual component. I watched the whole thing completely mesmerized. :P
