Jago
I recently ordered and anticipate the arrival of the HP Pavilion HDX laptop: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4041 Some of the specs I changed during the ordering process, but the pictures give you an idea. It's a beast with a 20.1" screen! The specs are quite impressive, but not much is mentioned about its onboard sound. That tells me it's probably the usual chip (AC97, Realtek, etc.). My arrangements will be primarily with sample libraries, and I might record myself playing the clarinet. I found the thread that zircon posted regarding which sound card to get, so that'll be a good read, but I also wondered about ASIO4ALL (http://www.asio4all.com). Has anyone had success with it? Sole Signal
Dang, that thing's huge. Anyway, I used to do all my work on an HP laptop (using FL), and ASIO4ALL helped tremendously with latency and just overall smoothness. It's so stable that I'm pretty sure it comes bundled with FL now as the default. For recording, well, it depends on how high quality you want your clarinet recording to be. There's always something like the USB E-mu 0404 if you want to get really fancy, but you should be fine for starters.
