We end our FIVE-COURSE MARIO MEAL with breakfast-for-dinner, as Posu Yan returns to OCR after a 3+ year hiatus with his fifteenth featured ReMix and his FIRST ReMix with lyrics/vocals!
I haven't heard chiptunes paired with singing all THAT often, and I've certainly NEVER heard them in the context of a Super Mario Kart ReMix celebrating the most important meal of the day, but that's exactly what the unpredictable-but-always-impressive posu yan has cooked up. After a wake-up call intro we get a syncopated, fun, & funky chip groove with mellow, relaxed vocals that convey the importance of morning nutrition for any would-be racers. It's mostly a chip landscape, but there's some brass, EP, and a sweet acoustic guitar solo to spice things up a bit, and the artist did an excellent job with stereo separation, ensuring that each individual part is clean, fresh, and delicious. Liontamer writes:
"I wonder how many people will hear the buzz from :03-:11 in their headphones and think their phone is vibrating. Is it an elaborate troll? The buzz makes complete sense paired with the lyrics, but I get the feeling that the meaning will be lost on some people and we'll enjoy a laugh at their expense. :-D
In any case, nice work, Posu! Cool to hear a vocal take from you as well! Don't stop with these, this one is lots of fun. :-) Very intelligent piecing together of the vocal and chip lines to handle the "Mario Circuit" melody. The brief guitar freestyling from 1:31-1:51 was loosely based on the source and was a perfect break in the middle before repeating the vocals. Good use of the SNES-style brass starting around 2:06 to add another layer of energy that didn't detract from the laid-back feel of the mix, yet also kept the ideas from dragging out. While the lyrics have nothing to do with Mario Kart directly, it's impressive how their playful, light mood feels like a 100% comfortable fit. po! killin' it with relaxation here as part of a happy, balanced music breakfast."
Technically "cuz the race is soon" and "no way we can lose" llines DO create a general connection to the game context, but Larry's right in that the libretto here is primarily about stuffing your face with awesome food... in a responsible, sustainable, and even rather healthy way. I'm gonna have to throw some props in for NOT mentioning bacon, which (huge fan, but still...) has been a little overplayed in the last, hmmm... decade or so. Instead we get "bowl of phở with lime" which sounds about perfect right now... just hold the tripe, please. Mr. Yan didn't provide any comments, so who KNOWS what he was thinking when he conceptualized this mix, but I personally prefer to believe that a being from another planet used inception to plant the idea in Posu's head that he would only feel at peace with the universe if he expressed his love of breakfast in the form of a Super Mario Kart ReMix, as the first & very unclear phase of a plan for global invasion. Seems plausible; hopefully he can confirm/deny. Excellent return from Posu Yan that predictably evades predictability, nails a chip/vocal aesthetic in a way that I'd love to hear more of, AND makes me hungry; awesome stuff!

Haha, wow, man I love this. I'd love to use this as my wake-up radio alarm in the morning, because it's just so damn happy and catchy. It'd be a lot better than an annoying buzzing alarm. Really liked the combination of chiptunes and the jazzy feel with fun lyrics about the most important meal of the day. Just a ReMix that makes me smile every time I hear it, and if I'm being honest, Posu Yan has a nice voice that absolutely fits right in with this song. Just can't say enough on how much I like this happy little tune.

Happy breakfast indeed. This feels like the best of those synth-vaporwave mellow mixes (not in tone or sound, just how it takes itself seriously about evincing a certain ambient mood).

That's a seriously catchy backing. Chiptune + vocals is definitely unexpected as DJP said. That guitar solo is a nice surprise. I'm gonna have to say that this mix is bad because I was already hungry and have 90+ minutes to go. Solid stuff with a bit too much repetition.

This is quite a fresh and unique take. The chiptunes with the mellow and calm vocals fit really well together, and the lyrics further serve to illustrate the feeling of a relaxed, chill breakfast to get prepared for the day.

Last night seriously lead me to new eating habits after listening to this song. I dunno what caused the urge to change, but I have a feeling this song acted as a catalyst. Besides being just plain "sweet" (seriously I have no other word to describe it), this song features a really cool, yet simple layout of instruments. But it works really well, I can't get enough of it. It's addicting as chocolate...but probably healthier. \m/

Interesting take! The instrumentation itself is cool, but the vocals added something more to the remix -- love how chilly/mellow it sounds. The overall theme was funny, and the arrangement was quite clever. My only concern is that it feels a little repetitive and doesn't have a lot of variation, but it's far from being a problem. Nice job!

What just happened? I can't decide if I'm impressed, confused, or just hungry!
Props for a unique take!!

I love the use of chiptunes and the lyrics are quite fun and entertaining. I have to say this is my favorite of the recent 5 Mario-themed remixes. Well done!

the day will pass you by
lotsa things to do
strategies to think through
'cuz the race is soon
start the day out right
with some fruit delight
joy with every bite

yummy, so very
so relax, unwind
your overthinking mind
with a bowl of phở with lime
everything's just fine out in the warm sunshine
happy breakfast
so enjoy the view
fresh, breezy, ocean blue
at our table set for two
with our stomachs satisfied, no way we can lose
happy breakfast to you
so start the day out right
