Today marks the 130th (!) birthday of Nintendo, and we've got more from the JUST RELEASED album Songs of the Sirens: Link's Awakening ReMixed - specifically, PROTO·DOME (Blake Troise) hits us with a plucky, funky, jazzy chip-prog take on "Mabe Village":
"So, the Mabe Village theme is great -- one of my favourites -- but it's really short. There was a lot of extrapolating to do, hence the 7/4 prog-jazz nonsense. Here's a cool tip I learned while writing this: if you play the Lydian scale of the home key over a 9sus4 on the fifth (in this case, F# Lydian over C#13sus4, heard at 3:46), it sounds damn cool!"
It's got all the playfulness & chip/retro textures you'd expect & hope for in something from Blake, with an extra helping of theory & experimentation to stretch out the source and provide for 4+ minutes of sublime fusion. Album co-director WillRock writes:
"Blake is one of those people who constantly delivers, and as expected, he brought his signature jazzy chiptune stylings to the iconic "Mabe Village" track. However, this one goes a step further than the typical PROTO·DOME offering, throwing in progressive arrangement ideas, including an awesome 7/4 section, and some really creative change-ups, and even has an extended slowed down outro right when you think the track has finished.
This has everything that makes a PROTO·DOME track great, but pushes things up by a level by taking things in unique and cool directions. Great stuff."
Plenty of curveballs & creative transitions/variation make this a hot one for arrangement and theory buffs, but it's still accessible, enjoyable, funky, & chock full o' character. Enjoy it responsibly, and enjoy the whole album too!

That funky cool bass in the beginning definitely perked me up right away. This remix just oozes creativity. It is exceptionally cool and I really dig the style. Excellent job on this ?
