Some truly inspired sound design on this hybrid drum & bass ReMix of the opening theme from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, from Rockos (Roch Côté), who returns after a seven-year hiatus:
"This song is a personal demand from my wife. Not the style but the song itself. I know she doesn't like heavy electronic music. But after years of marriage and all the listens I made her do to Pendulum and Tantrum Desire stuff, I could hear her hum some of the stuff she heard. I didn't know how she would react if I took her demand and made it in that style...
Well, here you got it. Animal Crossing meets drum & bass-ish style. Inspired by the likes of Pendulum, Tantrum Desire, and Infected Mushroom, this remix takes the main theme of Animal Crossing and make it go through "Propane Nightmares" then to kind of infected glitches to "Showdown"!
Keziah (my wife) was involved while I was laying down the original song track before remixing. She knew the notes and transcribed it. Also, the ending chimes (from the original game) was her idea and I liked it. All along she gave me small feedback here and there. (Ex: She told me the intro should be longer. So I did.)
I know on OCR I am probably known for the dubstep tracks I made. This one is a bit different and more fast-paced. I like it very much. She likes it very much too. It's her favorite track of mine.
Also, we had a hard time finding a neat track name for this to send out. Well, we were inspired by the "K.K." naming scheme. "R." and "K." for our first name letters and "Nu Hrizons" for the song remixed ("New Horizons").
After years of silence, I finally make more music than ever and I want to share all the video games-related ones to you. Thanks for listening to this track. It was a fun journey for us. I hope you will enjoy this one as much as we do!
Made with love."
Always. First off, our thanks to Keziah for inspiring Roch to create this truly unique piece & aiding with the creative process; it eventually gets into a recognizably d'n'b groove, but the intro explores some neat crystallized lofi bell textures & the overall piece breaks into half-tempo sections and has some badass bitcrushing going on; Liontamer evaluated:
"Always a treat for more Switch representation here, and we're happy to post another husband/wife collaboration! Props for making this too, because "Happy wife, happy life" isn't just a cliche, it's a must for those of you out there with wives. The original New Horizons opening theme is full of Animal Crossing's folksy charm, so I recommend anyone check out the cool performance video Nintendo put out. Roch's approach makes the theme more upbeat while integrating the dirty electro style and beats of Pendulum and the inspirations he mentioned. The beats should have been denser/beefier, but it's no big deal. It's a short theme, so respect to Roch for expanding upon it so nicely; while the source itself tune is pretty short, it's nonetheless loaded with different ideas, with Rockos making sure to leave no stone unturned. I'm glad Keziah enjoyed her collaboration with a fun result, and I loved that chippy ending in particular. /chef's kiss"
Truth. Drums were a little sparse initially, but I was certainly happy with em' when the full drop kicked in; I love the textural contrast Roch worked into this mix, where there's a sonic evolution and everything feels simultaneously distinct but unified, and the ending is rather playful, isn't it? 2'08" highlights (in a more exposed setting) the cool filter & crush modulation going on, and the mixing/mastering resulted in a super-beefy lowend & kicks/hits that land with impact, which are key elements for making the genre click. All told, this is an inspired, creative genre application for a fun/catchy source that retains the lightheartedness but busts out some blazing beats, creative FX, and varied timbres. Great stuff!

The energy shift around 1:36 was great and really kicked this remix to the next level. This is an excellent remix for an Animal Crossing game, great job!
