MkVaff (Mike Vafeas) *finally* does Chrono Trigger on OCR! Get aquatic & enjoy this straightforward but still energetic & smooth dance take on "Frog's Theme":

"I was a bit torn on submitting this one because it's pretty straightforward and close to the original, but I thought at least the production and the feel of this one was good enough to at least submit to see if you folks wanted to feature it. I have more ambitious stuff planned for the fall, but I figured this was still worth a sub to see if y'all enjoyed it enough to share. Hope you are having a wonderful summer!! :-)

I can't believe that I have no Chrono Trigger songs on OverClocked! I can't believe I haven't made a Chrono Trigger remix in over 20 years! Although I can barely remember having played through the game itself in 1995, the music has stuck with me throughout the years, and remains one of my favorite game soundtracks of that era - if not of all time. I previously made one remix of "Sealed Door" many years ago for Project Majestic Mix, but I had yet to submit any songs from that legendary soundtrack to the site. I think it's one of the soundtracks that has always intimidated me with how perfect it already is, but I decided to give it a stab anyway.

"Frog's Theme" has always been one of my favorite pieces from the original soundtrack. I always found it so catchy and upbeat, yet at the same time fittingly orchestral and regal for the character. I didn't know if the triplet feel of the original would lend itself to a dance remix, but, by the time I was done with the track, I ended up keeping the time signature and I thought I struck a pretty solid balance between the wonderful song structure & melody of the original and my own take with more electronic-sounding instruments.

As always, please enjoy, and thank you so much for checking it out and listening!"

The fam & I are currently watching Amphibia after closing out Gravity Falls & The Owl House, and I think this actually hits differently since I'm in a more amphibious mindset. Yep. Sidenote: There are some BRILLIANT shows aimed at kids these days, but well worth watching for all ages!! Mike delivers a fun, smooth, and groove-oriented mix that, while it doesn't throw any curveballs or left turns, is still a rock-solid & enjoyable take on the theme; Larry writes:

"Thanks to Mike for suppressing the understandable desire to self-reject one's work. Melodically conservative arrangements do indeed have a place here, oh yes, they do. (Read OCR's Submission Standards, especially the Arrangement section, and send yours in! ;-D) You too can be posted as long as you ignore that gnawing feeling in your mind that we're going to reject it. :-)"

What he said; the play-by-play here isn't really necessary because it's MkV doing his classic thing, the way he does, and that's not to be missed. Deku, Froppy (especially!), Green Lantern, & Hulk are in good company as fellow protectors in green, but ONLY Frog's got a MkVaff mix on OCR :) Enjoy!

Certified bop! I was boppin my head along at one point. Great percussion/bass mix and very tightly produced. I like it!

What I love about MkVaff's style is how each piece has plenty of room to breathe, and I can clearly hear every single note on every single synth and every single drum beat. Nothing ever gets buried or lost in the mix. No clutter, just sweet sweet synths and beats.
