Platonist (Jonas Loman) hits us with a chip/lo-fi SFX-laden dance take on "Mako Reactor" from FF7:

"It doesn't try too hard, but I think it adds enough without taking away too much. I've been thinking about extending it or adding stuff, but I've decided to let it be as is, as it feels complete somehow, even in its obvious minimalism."

With the mix of chip & samples and lo-fi bits, some of this reminded me of my favorite TG16 OSTs, in a good way. It's not straight chip, but it kinda marries chip, mod/tracker, and lo-fi/bitcrushed sensibilities into an appealing collage. Liontamer writes:

"Fun stuff per Jonas's usual approach. Production-wise, it felt like some of the highs were cut, but it wasn't a big deal and we ultimately have a really good minimalist groove here. Really dug the little bridge from :45-1:00 with some original writing ideas before the chorus. I also loved the little Super Mario World-esque SFX that sounded like Koopa shell kicks, and when you listen closely, there's a lot of substantive ear candy behind the lead; you've got to pay attention to appreciate those smaller details. I enjoyed hearing such a different take on "Mako Reactor"; the theme's still dark and ominous, yet the beat moves it forward. Evil shouldn't be catchy like this. :-)"

Well, I mean, ABBA were catchy as hell, but secretly worked for Beelzebub, so... (I kid, and I even liked the Chess musical) - it's true, much of the sinister menace is gone via this treatment, but there's still a dark soul, it's just wearing some spandex and getting its groove on a bit more. As Larry points out, in addition to the fun arrangement, there's some subtle sonic detail going on that's worth listening for. Simple, fun, & good, but with enough craft and nuance to keep things interesting. Enjoy!

I am a fan of the Mako Reactor source, and I gotta say I really enjoyed this creative take on the source. I really enjoyed the bass and I REALLY enjoyed the leads and secondary lead instruments. Pretty much everything from 1:00 - 2:00 was music gold! Fantastic remix here! ?

What an intriguing take! Man, this just gains steam as it goes along. 100% leave your volume up on this one - you'll pick up all kinds of fun mix-and-match elements, particularly in 1:35-2:05. I think the remixer made the perfect call on the length, FWIW. Well done!!

Well here's something a little different. I like this take on the song. The style works particularly well with a track like this
