  1. First of all, I'd like to say that I really liked various posts made on page 15 by Bummerdude, Dagda, Kawaiininjakat, and Vig. It's good to hear that djp was an advocate of UnMod. I always figured he was a cool dude. It certainly does seem like many of those in opposition to it - whether they be Judges, Mods, or plain old users - are new to the site, while the old-timers have established a familiarity with it.

Can't imagine why it would be taken seriously, considering it makes it appear everyone involved was just having a big laugh over what would undoubtedly upset and anger a lot of people on OCR... especially considering who posted them. I have to admit to feeling a good amount of disappointment in, and lessened respect for, those cheery looking folks when I saw it.

Yes, the gesture was decidedly obnoxious. But since they prefer to believe everyone in UnMod is a poster of "abusive" fiction and child pornography, I can see how some derived such enjoyment from the act.

Haha, it's somehow unsettling seeing The Coop post about penetration and dildos. I guess it took a holocaust to bring it out though.

Will I be able to make silly threads accusing people of collusion with the Cylons?

    OUT THE AIRLOCK WITH THEM!

  2. I loves me some Castlevania. Lament of Innocence was a good game. Haven't tried Curse yet, but I sure would like to see a big-budget console CV in the future, with elaborate level designs fitting for a 3D environment. Imagine how great it would be to combine art direction by Ayami Kojima and enough money to get it as nice looking as possible. Castlevania is all about the atmosphere, after all.

Of course, the 2D games are still the best and always will be.

  3. Instrumentalists only need to know three things:

    1. Keep your muscles relaxed, tension in any part of your body will kill your playing.

    2. Approach your learning experience objectively. If your blender breaks down, do you just keep trying to turn it on until it works? No, you get inside it, find the problem, and fix it. Likewise, when you can't play something, the answer is not "keep practicing". Find out what's stopping you and train that thing individually until it improves, then try again. Maybe you will have to entirely reconsider the way you approach speed picking, for example, but becoming a good player is all about climbing those little hills one by one until your skillset is prepared to face what you're attempting.

    3. Try to push yourself with each practice session. Don't just play the same songs over and over once you've learned them, or keep playing the same types of songs. Expand your repetoire (yes, have a repetoire) and try to learn something a little harder each day.

Those three rules make lessons next to useless. Curiosity about any techniques or methods can be sated by reading on the internet and watching tutorial videos. #2 and 3 can be applied to visual arts training as well.

  4. I'm going to ask an incredibly dumb and simple question.

How do you add swing to notes? I know you can use the "swing" bar to add swing to just the step sequencer but I haven't found any way to add it to notes in the piano roll - and obviously drums in swing with a melody that isn't sounds really bad. After a lot of searching through the help files and any tutorials I could find I've found nothing about adding swing to notes particularly in the piano roll, something which I would have thought would be really easy.

Is there something really simple I'm overlooking?

I would like to know that too.

  5. You're still immensely wrong. There are countless games that have gigantic MIDI archives on Japanese websites which will never be listed on VGMusic.

The internet covers more than the USA, you should use the "Languages" search in Google before making such an incredibly wrong statement.

I am aware that there are many songs that are not available on VGMusic and must be obtained elsewhere.

But if it pleases you that I be wrong, I certainly don't mind.

  6. Anyway, like every SNES song ever has been transcribed to MIDI already. It's all there on the internets. Like at www.vgmusic.com.

....You're not only wrong, but extremely narrowminded if you think that is every SNES song ever. Dumbass.

I said "on the internet", and then proceeded to give an example of a popular site for game MIDIs. I am aware that there are many songs that are not available on VGMusic and must be obtained elsewhere. Very sorry to step on your toes.

  7. Commenting on V's WIP:

Nice delicate sound here. Piano sounds fairly well-performed albeit noticeably mechanical. Fairly straightforward but decent effects to fill out the soundfield, although things did feel sprase nonetheless.

Strings come in at :51 and sound REALLY lossy, the way a low-quality audio stream warbles. It really drags the whole things down whenever it's in play. Left-hand piano part from :51-1:02 sounds a bit too rigid and looped. Audio skip at 1:15; could be my file, who knows.

Woodwind synth joins in at 1:27. The synth sounds decent, but rather plain-jane. The overall effects meant to thicken the instruments are ok, but the track still manages to sound somewhat thin, like the reverb's simply there to overcome any shortcomings with the texture. More bass string writing in here might help fill it out.

2:16 rehashes the string writing from earlier (:54), which felt too samey since the texture and number of instruments in play isn't too much different than before. Harp brought in at 2:49 sounds a bit mechanically sequenced, but the writing is ok. Ending is rather sudden and anti-climactic. I see how you were trying to wind things down, but I don't feel it resolved very strongly.

Good ideas in place so far, and this is without comparing this to the original. It could simply be a matter of the samples chosen, but most of them sound pretty generic, and the processing involved doesn't really do anything to change the tones and create something that sounds more unique.

Tempo and style felt like an issue. If you're gonna have the tempo the same the whole way, the piece may need to evolve and change more drastically over the 3 3/4 minutes. Right now, the arrangement is promising, but it kind of drags.

You should really get some feedback from another available J just to get another perspective. I'll give some more comments once I have time to compare with the SPC.

It was weird seeing that without a big, bolded two or three letter word at the end.

  8. Dudes, I'm sorry. This remix just about made me vomit all over my iBook. I couldn't keep it to myself - I can't stand this remix. Technically, yeah, it's 'ok.' Is it different? Of, course. And that's good - people gotta express themselves and people need variety.

But, I'm not a hippy, I'm sorry. The acoustic guitar generally makes me want to vomit and this is no exception. Maybe I was beaten with an acoustic guitar when I was 2 or something... I dunno. Sorry.

Ooh, nice computer model name-dropping. You must be so cool, using your Mac thing. Well, I'm on a VAIO, so I M COOLER THAN U!!

Anyway. I enjoyed this. Nice guitar work from Taucer, and Dave's vocal work has certainly improved since we last heard it. Just wish it was longer!
