  1. PSX Comment: It just sounded very... Final Fantasy Tactics OST-ish there.

Crescendo: There is more to sound than just pitch, volume, and length. An effective orchestral crescendo also affects the timbre. If I hear the same exact sound simply getting louder, then it's plain and boring, and doesn't elicit any kind of emotional response, which you are ALWAYS going for with an orchestral piece.

I don't expect you to use EWQLSO, but with GPO costing ~$200, I KNOW there's more you can do to get a more realistic sound.

In general, the tonality of the song is a bit lackluster. See crescendo comment.

NOTE: I don't do any digital orchestration. I compose for a live performance ensemble.

I'm familiar with EWQLSO and have used it before (but I don't own it). GPO is great and you are right, I can do more with it. But that isn't a sample issue which is why I was puzzled.

I'm not sure what you mean by "tonality" in your final comment. It is clear you don't mean tonality (what key it is in), though. Maybe timbre? Just asking for clarification because I still don't know what you are trying to say there.

Thanks for the comments. From what I can gather most of your criticisms are on the lack of humanization, then? Does the arrangement itself (composition) appeal at all?

  2. NOTE: I'm unfamiliar with the source.

0:00 - 0:09 - The first thing that really sticks out to me, aside from the sample quality is the mechanical attack / release of notes

0:10 - 0:19 - The buildup is very... dead. The cymbal swell runs a bit harsh

    0:19 - Has a very "I came straight from a PSX" sound.

0:45 - This has turned into a renaissance Marble Madness on LSD feel.

1:24 - Making an effective crescendo is about more than just making sounds quieter.

There is a great lack of intensity and realism to the sound. Taking on an orchestral-type remix is very ambitious, as it's more than just putting notes down. That may work for composing, but unless you have the facilities in which to record a real performance group, you're going to need to spend a lot of time humanizing your samples.

And while we're on that note, look into getting better samples.

EDIT: Keep it up. I look forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Thanks for the feedback! I don't know what to make of some of your comments (especially the PSX one and the one that mentions crescendos are more than just making things quieter??) but I think I get you on the rest.

I do tend towards focusing on the arrangement instead of humanizing, so I can understand the comments about mechanical attacks. I'm puzzled by your comments about the sample quality, though. This was done with GPO, which I understand isn't the highest dollar sample library out there, but I think it is more than adequate. I guess GPO just rubs some people the wrong way.

I'm also puzzled by your comment about it lacking intensity in the sound? Is this related to it being mixed somewhat quietly? Can you be more specific about what sound you were hoping for and not getting here?

Incidentally, I loved the comment about Marble Madness on LSD. That is a very good way to put what I was actually shooting for!

    Thanks again.

  3. I think its heading in a good direction, but i do have a couple comments.

I'm not sure if your going for the classic 16-bit sound with this or not, but I think adding some stronger sounding drums might give the track some more power and emotion to it. And seeing as how you only have a bass drum and cymbals, you can use something like a concert drum.

Overall though, the arrangement is very good and all the instruments shine through. What do you use for your recording needs? Programs, instruments, etc.

Yeah I've been considering adding some more percussion. I probably will.

I use FL Studio 8 and Garritan Personal Orchestra and a few strategic soundfonts.

  4. Beautiful arrangement. The quiet parts are too quiet in my opinion, compared with the fortissimos. Overall, though, it is very fluid and respectful of the original track. Nice work!

You wouldn't happen to be the mind behind a particularly good Rygar orchestration I came across years ago, would you?

I did a Rygar medley in collaboration with Jago a couple of years ago, yeah. Jago followed it up with a much better one since then called Rygar Megamix or something like that. You are probably thinking of that one, but you might have mine in mind.

Thanks for the compliment, incidentally, and I agree with you about the quietness. I hope to fix that.

  5. Orchestra arrangement of main theme from Secret of Mana. Obvious problems with the production at this point that will be fixed, but overall this is close to what I'm shooting for. Not sure about the end, but the idea is close to what I want. Definitely want the contrast between the progressive harmonies and the traditional at the end, just not sure this is exactly what I want.

    Anyway, comments are appreciated. Thanks.

  6. First notes had a very synthy sound due to their weak bleating attack. The arrangement is pretty but empty at times, and makes a few too many stops on the way. Timpani rolls are also pretty abundant compared to the number of timpani strikes in the track. EQing is a little on the weak side, probably due to the samples.

I also got no sense of where the track was heading. It was heading up, and then it stopped, did something, and started heading up again. And stopped. Then it did something, and stopped again. And rose. And stopped. It needs more direction. there's also a bit of dissonance at aroun 1:45, but I don't mind that as muchy as the other issues I've mentioned.

I remember this source from somewhere, but it took me until the flute at the end to recognize it. That's about as much source comment I'll give you atm.

Either it's copy-pasted from source (which I don't know), or you've done some nice writing. Ending sucks, fading out orchestral works just doesn't work well. It also implies something about the source/interpretation ratio, but I'm too tired to care. Overall, it had an okay sound, and it could certainly turn out great, but it'll take a sample upgrade, a writing upgrade (such as transitions, wider range on the writing, counterpoint, overall more elaborate stuff), and a mix upgrade. Don't let that stop you, it's just one step of the way.

I stated in my original post what the source music is and that it is not fully composed yet. Obviously I don't intend to end it on a fadeout. There will not be a sample upgrade. These samples are fine. The writing will be upgraded, as I said I've not finished composing it.

I've worked on the transitions some and added a bit more composition, already. Here is a newer version, if you are interested. http://pwatts14.googlepages.com/dragonwarrior.mp3

  7. I could take the easy way out and just say you need to get Synth 1 for all your synthesizing needs, but I have a sneaking suspicion you actually mean Sequencer or DAW, not synthesizer. It wouldn't hurt to learn the correct terminology. Of course, if you're actually referring to a VSTi Software synthesizer (with oscillators, filters etc. etc.) feel free to ignore my bullshitting.

No, don't ignore. Get Synth1. That much was right. :)

Also, get Reaper for a DAW if you want free. Otherwise get FL Studio if you want good but still cheap. Otherwise get Cubase or Pro Tools or something like that if you want even better but not still cheap. Cakewalk, etc. are in there somewhere, too.

  8. There are 41? Everything I've seen says 40. What is probably the 41st stage I'm missing?

EDIT I think I found it. I don't think I have the Mario Bros. stage. Thanks Aninymouse.

EDIT Again, yep that did it. Thanks again. I counted 40 stages I had unlocked and all the guides say there are 40 stages (stinking liars). Thought I had them all.

  9. Serious question here, this one is really irritating me. My understanding is that there is a way to filter out some stages from being picked when you choose "Random" from the stage selection screen. Also, I understand you have to unlock this ability. I believe the requirements are:

    [X] All stages unlocked

[X] 200 KOs in VS mode

They are Xd because I have done both of them (I have like 2000+ KOs, so that isn't the issue, and I have 40 stages unlocked, which I believe is all of them?).

Now, how do I filter? I can't find anything that allows me to do that and I was never notified that I had the ability. Or do I still need to unlock this somehow? Missed a requirement? Frantic, persistent googling has been no help.

  10. I don't think that's what he's saying; I think he means there's no AAA titles on the console except for Nintendo titles. That said, I wouldn't say anything Nintendo's done on the console so far is particularly amazing. They're so afraid of trying anything new lately that I'd swear they changed their name to Electronic Arts.

I am unconcerned with what people consider AAA titles and whether or not people besides Nintendo have published them All I'm concerned with is that the games I want to play come out for the Wii at an almost 100% rate (I don't mean I want to play every Wii game by this, I mean that if a game comes out I want to play, it is almost always for the Wii), while the games for the Xbox 360 appeal to me at almost a 0% rate. There is no reason for me to purchase an Xbox 360. That is all I was pointing out.

To add to this, one of the biggest games of the year to me that is multi-platform is Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. It is far superior on the Wii over the other versions. I truly feel like what Konami has done with the Wii version of that game could revolutionize sports gaming on consoles (at least I hope so).

It doesn't bother me that some others don't share this view.
