  1. from what i'm hearing, people having the most problems are those who upgrade from XP to vista.

i bought a laptop with it pre-loaded and i beefed up the system just because i knew it was resource intense and because laptops can't really be upgraded (get my money's worth).

I have seen DJP's issue with files that don't copy and network file sharing doesn't seem to exist. but other than that it's done everything i need it to do. I had a few issues with running Java Netbeans but i think it was a bad program install because i re-installed it and it worked.

the real kick is, what have people who bought Vista Ultimate really gained by going ultimate? 80 something fonts! that's microsoft's big reward for that extra $100 or so you spent on Ultimate, congrats!

  2. i didn't have enough status to pull together a prank of any kind and i guess releasing a chicken in the cafeteria was the best someone ever came up with that i remember. but here's some ideas:

fill lockers full of packing peanuts, my high school on the last day opens every locker and dumps the contents into the floor, its usually a huge mess...but imagine if every locker they open along the way dumps out packing peanuts.

put a teacher's car onto the roof. (helps if they drive something like a mini cooper or a voltswagen)

skip a day where all the seniors go out and buy super soakers and water balloons and come back to the exits at the end of the day and douse everyone that walks through (my brother's old high school does that to the freshmen every year)

and trapical, your story is so good i almost can't believe that happened. that is fucking epic, props on that one

  3. I tried vista on my computer, it looked cool, ran so-so, but just had way to many annoyances to deal with. i have to turn off the cleartype font in IE7 when it came out in XP cause it looks blurry to me, but vista has it on for everything by default, i turned it off and things still looked blurry...games ran too slow, even turning off the Aero feature and the sidebar didn't get them running smooth, did help performance though, but just not enough.

aesthetically speaking, its great but processing wise, it over taxes my system like i thought it would. so i'll stick with my XP for now until i get a better machine capable of processing all of that at once.

also a few things that i found were really annoying, the Aero feature looks great, i like the see through windows and the translucent stuff, but why is it that my resolution is in 1024x786 and the icons look like i'm in 320x240? it does me no good having a pretty background to see through windows when my desktop icons cover everything up. also the compatibility list is way behind, but that's typical of the new beast...i'm sure it'll be remedied within the future, but when my printer isn't supported, and i need stuff printed for school at anytime, i'm going to have to go back to something where its supported. that and the norton anti-virus wasn't supported, symantec wants a serial number to upgrade, i don't have a serial number, i got my software free through my school ages ago...why won't it upgrade on its own damnit? to many little things to deal with right now. but i did like the 'gadgets' pane though, that's a nifty idea, having weather, news, time, processing stats, etc right there on the desktop. couple of cool other things i could get along with, but if i want to play games and stuff, like i said, i'll have to wait for a better machine to do it with

  4. i say everyone in major towns, get some friends together, go down to your local radio shack and buy LED lights, batteries, wire, and black protoboards. make some ATHF signs and hang them around your respective towns.

and i think i agree with the coke vendor at my store today, he said they need to go find the guy that called the police told them the signs look like bombs. i hope boston realizes everyone is laughing at them now.

  5. If you feel like paying for it, I think you might be able to transfer characters between accounts using Blizzard's paid transfer thing.

no, they said both accounts have to have the same last name, basically they have to be owned by the same person. since i'd be using my credit card to pay, i couldn't use his name, nor do i want too. regardless, nice thought though. besides its not like i don't know his password, i'll get what i need from them when i start a new character and go from there. i'm just enjoying the experience and learning the game play so when i do start my account i'll be ready.

  6. yea, cause you know the thousands of volcanos giving off tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide/monoxide everyday 24/7 for the last couple of thousand years has nothing to do with it. or that certain rain forests may even give off certain methane gases....nope, its all been the human's fault with their 100 years or so of burning fossil fuels, coal, and 40 or so years of nuclear energy...not to mention that we've drastically reduced the number of CFCs emissions in the last decade or so. yes we realized its effects of putting holes in the ozone, that's why we stopped using them.

here's why the earth seems so friggin hot, a few reasons, may or may not be correct, but i figure one of them has to be damned close:

    1) the earth is still coming out of an ice age, basically we are warming up again, look how close we are too the sun, compare that to how much energy we receive and how hot we should be. also consider the fact we are basing all of this on maybe 200/300 years of actual recorded temperature history, based upon civilization being around say 7000 years, and the earth a couple billion years. so you tell me, based on the time spans here, how the hell are we supposed to know what the temperature is supposed to be.

    2) i think the earth is slightly out of orbit or outta sync, basically our orbit year is slightly longer/shorter than a calendar year and the seasons are just adjusting slowly. lately december here's felt like fall from years ago and jan feb felt like december...its frickin freezing here now. it'll probably feel like spring into may and summer into august september again. this seems way outta season compared to years ago

    3) i've heard of a study that the clouds are actually more of a problem then greenhouse gases. and that years ago the earth passed through gamma radiation from a supernova exploding, the radiation caused the clouds to gather and it changed the weather patterns. or something like that

    4) its all in your heads

1 of these theories is right...or maybe all of them....regardless, quit your whining and except the fact that the earth is probably getting warmer. pointing the finger at humanity isn't solving the problem...

also, if you really want a solution, we can drop nukes on a few key countries and trigger a nuclear winter, that'll cool things down.

  7. This press conference had the potential to be very funny if they had rehearsed or planned this more.

yea, but a night in jail and their lawyer basically limiting them to what they can say, i think it was pretty amuzing for something probably thought up on the fly. how else would you get the press to leave you alone? annoy them and don't give them what they want, its fricken awesome!

  8. what a bunch of retards in boston. your telling me outta the thousands of people, probably hundreds of cops that saw the lights, not one of them, not a single one of them recognized them to be cartoon characters. i'm not saying they have to know what show or what their names are, but come on...give me a damn break people.

  9. My roommate got it for christmas and my computer is the only one that can run it. we've both been playing, but later when he gets his own computer, or i get a laptop, i'm going to buy the game and create my own account...it'll suck cause i can't switch my character over, but i figure i'll restart my BE Mage anyway, i've barely played her and instead been playing my undead warlock.

I play on Dunemaul, name's Alkaid, undead warlock. but judging by the first page, no one plays on Dunemaul...oh well, i'll play with my bro and my roommate and some of my bro's friends.

    PS: Oh and Horde ftw!

  10. PS - what are your specs?

    Intel P4 2.52GHz

    1 Gig RAM

    Radeon 9800 Pro-Wannabe

I'm pretty sure i have the specs, but i think its just barely. i probably meet the minimum and not the recommended. i usually prefer to have the recommended or better when it comes to running programs, but i can't control things like processor speed/power without having to go out and practically buy a new computer. from what crucial.com tells me, my system tops off at a gig of ram, so i'm not sure if i can put any more into it. its a dell, it was built to be a working computer, which it does very well. i'm happy with it, but later on when i'm rich and famous, i'll look into getting something a little newer when the time calls for it.

    "So pretty....like extra flowers...."

  11. Zero_Infiniti, I just want to clarify one thing about why I think using the GBA slot would be important; its not so much containing for holding space but for design limitations. I don't think the DS is designed to allow you to remove a cartridge that is being played while the system remains on.

I have my DS setup to skip the loading screen and go straight to the DS cart (GBA cart has second priority). For a while I was playing a GBA game but had a DS cartridge in; so I'd quickly eject the game while turning the system on (you have a second after you hit power to do this). One time I was a tad late popping out the DS cartridge and my system did not appreciate it.

The type of memory used for RAM typically cannot hold any information when a device is turned off (there are exceptions depending on the hardware used). And even then, I'd question if the system's loading a game wouldn't overright the save file.

i haven't attempted to eject a cartridge from my ds while its on, but reguardless, they'll have to come up with something. having to manufacture a gba memory card would be kinda a waste considering that it would only be used for one game (even though it'd be mad cheap to manufacture you know they'll charge 40 bucks for it). granted they could make it universal, but then that's only for games released after the card, and if they decide to use them. if the cartridges hold up to 1 gig, that's a lot of information that can be stored and i believe that covers a majority of games that nintendo or 3rd party companies want to produce for the ds. in addition its not like the cards can't hold up to 2 gigs or 4 gigs within the near future. we already have digital memory cards that go up to these values (and possibly higher). its just a question of whether the ds hardware is set up to read from them or not.

  12. Now, someone mentioned networking, and said it was a pain in the ass. Well, not in my experience. I've had to transfer some files to/from my XP laptop, and the only problems I ever had were on the laptop. One thing to note: vista defaults to using WORKGROUP as the network name, instead of MSHOME, which may confuse some. But I'd say the networking is the biggest improvement over XP so far, and I have no idea what kind of problems you might have with it.

windows xp professional i thought defaulted to WORKGROUP too...it seems like anyone with networking problems seems to be running xp home edition...

anyway, cool read pylon. though i can agree with others here that my system isn't requiring or desperately needing me to go out and pay $300 to overtax it beyond its specs (my comp's barely compatible). granted if i buy a new computer in the next few years that'll run it, sure i'll buy it with the machine. i do think that waiting a little while to see how it runs on the market would do some good too. i remember when xp first came out and my dad was so pissed cause things like printer drivers didn't install and other things didn't work correctly right outta the box. but now the thing runs perfect. i don't expect this OS to be perfect right away, but hopefully it will prove to be sufficient when they work the first few bugs out. i look forward to using it, whenever i get a machine that'll run it.

  13. yea there's definetely a lot of dead horse beating going on around here...

    but just to point out

I'll just make this one point, and that is that space and hardware capability are not a problem. FFVII was four cds, each cd is roughly 700mb so that is 2.8gb (roughly) that needs to be handled at the worst.

which actually each CD on the playstation was about 400mb (at least when i copied them to ISOs), take the fact that each CD probably has the exact same content on them except the few cutscene and i'm sure dialog changes (you know since [sPOILOERS]Aeris dies on the first disk[/spoilerS] so you don't much need her information or related dialog on the next two disks...not to say its not there, but in a coding perspective). compressing the game would be too easy.

Admittedly, the two cart sizes for the DS are 512mb and 1,024mb; but let us not forget the GBA slot. The problem with a multi-cartridge games has to do mostly with saves, so long as certain information is contained on a GBA game, information will not be a problem.

you do know that a PS1 memory card was less than 64KBytes right? if you put it into your PS2, each game save was only 4KB, i'm sure it could be easily stored on the DS cart, and transfered via RAM...

its not an issue of the game fitting onto a DS Card. the issue is whether or not Nintendo and Squeenix will do it. the simple answer, probably not. you hardcore FF7 people need to get over it. yes i'd probably buy it too if they did, but until they do, i'm spending that $40 bucks on food and bills and other important things.

and a MGS1 port would be awesome! use the touch screen to select items faster too...but speaking of psycho mantis, how will you confuse him by plugging the controller into the second slot, or have him taunt you by reading your other namco saves off the memory card...looking back, i never used that trick to beat him, and i can't remember what i did to take him out. i think i just shot at him until i hit him...something like that...

  14. Actually i could see improvements to be added to the wii. other than ripping it apart and adding new hardware internally, addons can easily be adapted for it. light-gun, that power-glove someone was talking about, hell i was telling my dad that it would be cool to add a vest type item which senses where a player is standing (like the police 911 game in the arcade). imaging boxing where you don't have to sway the wiimote and chuck, but you sway your body. the device is capable of supporting any bluetooth or infared device, so there are plenty of options there.

As for Sony and Microsoft, let them duke it out who's going to rape your wallet the hardest. i doubt we've seen the limits to either of their current machines and like all consoles of the past in about 5 years the best of the best will be on the market for them.

I do agree that games with online multiplayer functionality are practically becoming standard just to sale the game. take the DS, practically all DS games have some form of wireless multiplayer that doesn't require everyone to own the game they are playing. yes it limits the benefits to owning the cartridge, but everyone can still play. its the innovation of nintendo that "anyone/everyone can play" combined with new online "you can play with anyone" and Sony/Microsoft's "this will be the only console you'll ever need" approach that will be combined into the next generation of consoles.

  15. Characters are important to the success of a character driven show or universe. The original Star Trek used this, as did TNG and DS9. Voyager dropped the ball, and Enterprise never even tried to pick the ball up in my opinion.

"Shut up Wesley!" came to mind when you say characters being important in TNG...

but i liked the show, i just hated how G4 played them in random order. my friend's got all the seasons on his harddrive, i've seen a few, mostly wanted to see the borg episodes that i missed on G4, like "the best of both worlds"...classic

  16. protest, egg drops are inhumane against unborn chickens. or tell them you're religion forbids it. they'll have to give you an 'a'

or say screw it and roll the egg in a paper, and chuck it at someone you really dislike. followed by 'damn, i guess my design didn't work'

  17. sorry, haven't been a player much...someone pm me a schedule of when you're playing...i rarely check this topic anymore unless i see it on the front page...i'm usually around the forum when i'm bored, but if i have a schedule i'll jump on halo 2 sometime. my friend will play once in a while, his gamertag is Zero Silo. but we gotta see if we're going to renew his subscription in july. pm me when the next get together is, if i'm not working i'll be there, weeknights after 10pm est are best for me.

  18. require Win Vista

Current stuff runs on XP/2K, but nah, fuck it, let's make the next OS totally different for more fucking $.

    Yay capitalism.

probably cause the new OS will be running something similiar to UNIX for security standards and that will keep people from messing with critical files (which they'll probably install halo 2 to)...or something like that?

anyways, do we have an official clan night, shit i haven't played halo 2 in forever, i keep playing need for speed...

  19. sorry all, i've not been able to play xbox for some time, i was actually on last night for a while, but no one was there...but i'll be around a lot more this summer when i move back home from the dorms...hopefully in august a friend and i might buy a 360 when we move into an apartment...until then i'll be around after may 12th. at least i was able to score higher than a 6yo in slayer BR on relic (11 to his 10) on rumble training, man i hate switching from normal to wide screen tv, it throws my sensitivity off...

  20. i'm not very good at making things small and look good (that and i got this annoying thing in photoshop i can't get rid of and takes up about 20 pixels of the top corner...)

so i put in some pictures, possibly ripe for ideas

  21. damn i haven't been on in a while...guess i'll have to play when i get back to kennesaw for the holidays, unfortunately my roommates got 360s and gave the xbox to the one's brother. so now i can't really play on the xbox...guess i'll have to save my money sometime in january to buy my own...but i really don't want to buy an xbox just for friggin halo2...might have to pony my money to buy a 360 in the summer...
