  1. Whatever, guys. I already said I'm not going to push this anymore. You just must not appreciate a truly logical debate or discussion (seeing as I've been the only one here to present any logic or real in-depth proof, seeing as mis-quotes, and jpegs of incomplete information qualifies as non-sequitur and your assumption of "It's not larping, it's larping" is ad hoc reasoning. It's latin, look it up. By the way, never once said it's not larping, it's larping... I just said that you didn't have to play that way.)

It's alright though. I won't waste time pitying you for your lack of mental capacity or ability to logically debate; it took us Grecians centuries to perfect our logic, so I wouldn't expect any of you to be good at it, especially given current western culture.

I'm through with being cordial; it gets me nowhere. Post to your heart's content.

PS: For it being an "eyesore", you sure are wasting a lot of YOUR time in here, aren't you? I'm sure that says something about you, too...

  2. It took a lot of thinking for me to decide whether I was going to push this further; one of the things I hate in the world is hypocrisy... but I hate ignorance above all, so one more time. But I promise, this is it. After this, I am done. I'm not going to argue with you people, because you obviously get jollies out of trying to get me mad (and though you probably think you have been, because you can't dictate vocal tone through written word... you haven't) and that's not what I'm here for.

Once and for all, when people LARP, they assume a charater. They assume a role, and identity, and they follow that role to a T. No one here can dispute that. I certainly am not. But, I will not follow this formula, and many other people won't either, when I play TDL.

If you look on the Wiki, the name I use is either Jack Kieser or Phaze, depending. You may think, "Well, isn't that role playing? You're giving yourself a name and a character!" Simply... no, it isn't. I use these names because I don't like giving my real name out on the internet or to people I don't know. As I'm sure you're aware of, the world is filled with crazies.

Now, do I doubt that people WILL give themselves characters and act as those characters? No, I do not, and I have never once in this thread or any other said as such. However, this behaviour is not integral to the game itself, which is what I've been TRYING to tell you all.

The term 'Live Action' has been applied to this game for the sake of a (semi)accurate moniker to be used in short. Let me explain why. In the Magic TCG, if you lose a duel, you can ask you opponent for a rematch, no harm, no foul. If you lose all of your Life Tokens in TerraDrive, you are out of the game. You can't play anymore. Simple as that. You can acquire more life tokens, sure, but until then, no duels for you.

Further more, I am a faction leader. For the sake of tracking people and matches, people will be assigned to my faction. Additionally, factions will be tracked, and if a faction can assassinate another faction's leader, additional points will be awarded. So, in the event of a large-scale battle, I will be, as per my Faction Leader Card's special ability, be able to tap other faction members to fight on my behalf. I will (theoretically, we're still hammering this out) have the ability to micro- and macro-manage fights, assigning faction members to opponents as I see fit.

Will I be filling this 'role'? Yes. I will. Hence the 'Role Play' aspect of the moniker. However, and this is important, will I be yelling "YARR!" because the Crossbones Exchange is a band of cyber pirates, as per the Wiki? In short, no. I will not.

I will state this integral fact one more time: charater role playing is not an integral part of the game; it is allowed and, if you enjoy it, encouraged, but in no way is it REQUIRED to play the game, which is ALL I've been trying to say up to this point. If someone wants to sign up for TerraDrive just to try to get to the top of the leaderboards, then they can. They don't even have to join a faction. People can play the game however they see fit, so as to accustom as many people as possible, which at base is what the game is really all about.

Is TerraDrive, at it's core, a LARP? I think I have made my point clear. Can it be played as one? I never said it couldn't. But is it one AT IT'S CORE? No. It is a card game at its core. A massive scale one, but a card game, none the less.

I hope this clears up both the game and my position on this nonsense.

  3. It looks like you stay Zero Suit Samus until you die or something. That could be good or bad, depending on how she plays; if you are in a long fight and Samus tactics aren't working, then you have a whole other moveset with her to try out. Could be very advantageous.

    --Jack Kieser

  4. *sigh... again*

I'm trying to correct a misconception. You say that the (limited) knowledge you have now is good enough. That's fine, I guess; free world. It's just wrong, that's all.

I'm very content in the knowledge that I go to a school with people who wear chain mail and cloaks TO SCHOOL. I have nothing to be ashamed of, because I know what bad is, and I'm certainly not bad. What's just... disappointing, I guess, is the immaturity. As I said earlier, this is all for fun. That's what PAX is all about; gamers getting together to party. But everyone who came to this thread so far has some big deal, probably some problem with me (this thought based on an earlier post I read) that basically makes it impossible for anyone who is serious about playing at PAX to actually discuss the game.

Someone earlier said that if people want to discuss the game, they'll come. Well, thanks to this needless arguing, I wouldn't be surprised if anyone who did come thinks, "Well, screw that." Which is completely against every tenant TDL was created for, namely the most people possible playing.

Please, now. This is getting ridiculous. If you don't have anything constructive to say, then don't say anything at all. I have been nothing but cordial to you. You could at least show a margin of respect; if not for me, then for your fellow gamers who actually care.

    --Jack Kieser

PS, to DJTempora and all those other people who love to "quote": I like how you guys selectively quote to your hearts content. Really, like I said, read on, and you'll find what I mean. That DJT quote of me not liking how I didn't start things, totally out of context the way you quoted it. Nice job.

And Global-Trance... yeah, I totally agree with you. Ridiculous. Nice ASCII, btw. ^^

  5. You can sugarcoat it and try to bend the facts all you want, but your friend the wiki begs to differ:

    larpgo3.png

Now please, no more of this. Leave us. If someone is interested, they'll post.

    ...

I already dealt with this. Read on. Go to the Technomancer website. Go to the PA forums, where the CEO of Technomancer is ready and willing to answer questions.

I love how I didn't start this, either. The Damned did, if memory serves correctly. Yet I'm getting all the crap (btw, Damned... I'm looking forward to the Pkmn album. I hope all is going well with it. ^^).

As I said before, and as I will say one more time, the game can be played any way you want. You don't have to play by the wiki if you don't want to. Ultimately, the wiki is there to flesh out the cards; later on, Technomancer will release cards based on the Wiki info.

Now, YOU stop it. I see no reason why I should have to leave a thread I created for a purpose, while you can stay around to give me crap about something that should have been dealt with 3 pages back.

    --Jack Kieser

  6. Anyone else see a slight problem here?

If it ain't LARPing, I have a feeling the WA police are going to want to have a talksie with you. If you're not doing it for real, it's role playing. Live.

    gtfokthx

*sigh* Really, now. I know people are smarter than that. When I say "killing people", I mean getting into card duels. You don't have to do anything special to do that, do you? After all, I seriously doubt you call Magic or Wow TCG players LARPers, do you? No, you don't because it's a card game.

That is what TDL is, an organized TCG; the differences include larger scale fights, an organized structure, and highly simplified play, but it is a TCG regardless. The fight style allows you to go up to people and challenge them, which is where the live action comes in.

    That's all.

    --Jack Kieser

  7. Stop provoking him. He'll go off on another "it's not LARPing it's LARPing" rant.

You misconstrue my meaning, gentlemen. I'm not denying that indeed I am alive and that indeed there are people in prescribed roles. I AM, however, saying that this stigma that you are no doubt thinking of (guys with swords in chain mail yelling about spells and dragons) is incorrect; no one HAS to play the game in any set manner.

Yes, some people will want to follow the Wiki to the 'T'. Some people won't. Some people will get to the show and have never heard of the story, and will just want to get into some fun card fights. That's the whole point; play however you define fun.

And, of course, about the kill stations... you play online games with leaderboards, do you not? Yet, I hear nothing about that. The only purpose the kill stations, as far as I know, serve, is to track how many people are officially playing (for the record thing), track how many people are in each faction, and track who is doing well in their battles.

I honestly see no reason for you guys to badmouth so much... it's a game. You don't want to play, then don't. For those involved with the story and implementing the game itself, we have explicit instructions not to involve people who aren't playing. So, if you go and don't play, you probably won't even notice us.

Lighten up. Or at least keep the thread open for people who DO want to discuss the game, intead of filling it with off-topic banter.

    --Jack Kieser

  8. Listen, like I (and the site, if you read further) said, you can play the game however you like. If you just want to run around killing people, you can. Just walk up to someone who is playing, say, "I wanna fight you", and there you go. If you are so concerned about "LARPing", you don't need to risk it by playing more hardcore-style (btw: if you do play a little more in-depth, you will see the 4 factions will probably be engaged in turf wars around the Convention Center, because the kill log stations are going to be surrounded by the different factions).

And, again, like I said, the whole point of this is to try to A) have fun playing a simple game with lots of people and B) to try to break the world record, a noble goal in its own right. If you don't want to play, that's fine. But please don't trash-talk just because. It's all in good fun, after all...

    --Jack Kieser

  9. Personally, I betting that:

    A) the sound quality up on the site is not what will be in the game. Mr. Sakurai is simply putting up a MIDI version to give you a basic idea.

    B) because the theme to the game has that awesome live recording, but we've also heard that very not-live version in the trailers, not all the songs will be live orchestrated, if any really are.

    --Jack Kieser

  10. See, the thing is... it's not LARPing.

Like, at all. You can play it that way if you want, but you can also just run around killing people. The game is designed to be whatever you want it to be. If you want to be really in-depth, you can create a character and play as him/her if you want, but in no way is that a requirement for playing.

And, one of the big things about the game is that we are going for breaking the Guinness world record for largest live game in one location, which is really possible considering the projected PAX attendance of like 20k this year. Probably more, but who knows. Since you get the stuff you need to play at the door anyway, a lot of people can play just killing people. If you sign up, though, like register either at the site or at PAX, you get real-time kill tracking and a leaderboard. And you can win stuffs. Which is a bonus.

    --Jack Kieser

  11. now really, if you wanted people from here to be going to the convention, you should be telling them that the OneUps will be performing at PAX.

    nice fail at advertising :D

Just so you know, I don't have an official affiliation with the game; I'm just playing. But the concept is really, really cool. Which is why I wanted to spread the word, because people probably don't know much about it.

And yes, the OneUps ARE going to be there, which will be freaking awesome. Making an already good show better... :)

    --Jack Kieser

  12. To those OC fans who will be attending PAX '07:

Technomancer-Press is collaborating with Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade to attempt to break a world record for the largest live action RPG in one setting at this year's PAX. Named TerraDrive Live, this incredibly simple game will be open for all PAX attendees to play, as all that's needed to play will be given at the doors!

The catch, though, is that we need YOU to make the game first! Over at www.terradrive.net, you can sign up and edit the wiki that will be used to create the game itself; you don't even need to play at PAX to edit, either. If you wander by and have a good idea for the game, go ahead and edit away, and you might see TerraDrive game items in the future using your idea!

You can also sign up for one of the four color factions in the TerraDrive universe (go Crossbones Exchange!), or if you're planning on attending and want to head up your own, register your own faction and align it with one of the main four. Or, if you see a faction on the Wiki that you like, sign up for it. If you aren't sure if you want to play yet, you can also register for any of the official factions when you get to PAX.

The best part is, this game is totally free play. You can join one of the factions and get in on some turf war action, or simply play as a freelance mercenary and attack anyone you want! Who knows, you could also sell your services to the highest bidder...

So come on over to www.terradrive.net and join in on the fun!

  13. I liked the 64 DK rap, the one playing in SSBM sucks.

Several years ago, the kids section of the Chicago Tribune did a story writing contest. I wrote some godawful thing about Atlantis (which, at the time, I thought was the epitome of everything written ever). I lost, but was appalled to see that the winner plagiarized a large portion of the DK rap. I was furious, and wrote up a big letter to send in, pointing out this copier's dastardly deed. I never sent it though D:

Man, why not? That's a travesty (the plagiarizing, that is)... I wouldn't let that guy get away with taking stuff like that.

Besides... if DK ever found out, that guy would be dead. It would have only been right to give him fair warning. Watch, one day, he'll answer the door and find a 600 lb. fake gorrila waiting to jump his ass.

    --Jack Kieser

    Edited for non-double posting:

Man, I went back and watched the 15 second movie they gave us... Volt Tackle has some serious knockback... and damn, Fox DOES go really high. I really don't remember him flying that high with his UpB in Melee...

Now, with even more triple-post editing power!:

JESUS! That stage looks like fun. I can't wait to have K.K. Slider play during a fight!

  14. Wow, an interesting bit of trivia for anyone... interested.

According to Wiki (which, as you know, knows all):

"DK Rap" was the first-ever incidence of the word "hell" being spoken aloud in a Nintendo game. It ought to be pointed out that Rare is a British company, and in Britain the word "hell" is not viewed with anything like the opprobrium it is in the US. In order to avoid future controversy, when the Rap was used in later games, "hell" was replaced with "heck".

    Also worth noting:

The line "His coconut gun can fire in spurts. If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt!" was named the fourth worst game line ever in the January 2002 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Wow, no love for the Rap.

    --Jack Kieser

  15. Oh, that sucks, man. Yay for college; mine is so crazy intense, they tell incoming students that they are almost prohibited from getting a job. But, the school hosts launch parties for major games and systems, so it's all good as far as we're concerned.

I've pulled double shifts on launch days before, so I feel for you.
