  1. I could name a few games. Some of them are more obscure. There is yet to be any remixes of Mother 3 (as far as I have seen). Okage Shadow King is pretty obscure...I could think of 2 tracks in that game that could be remixed rather well. I think World of Warcraft (although very well known) has a few tracks...mainly the battlegrounds themes that could offer great fast paced and or heavy remixes.

  2. All I gotta say is, I imported Mother 3, played thru it 3 times, can't read a lick of Japanese. I used a translation at GameFAQs and pretty much got the jist of it.

Mother 3 is one of the greatest games I have ever played. The battle system is unique, the story is deep and dark. Blatent content that makes it instantly "innapropriate" for our censored American culture. I love everything about it.

Shigesato Itoi is a genius. Mother (series) in general is the most unique RPG series to this day. Most RPGs follow the swords and sorcery trend, but Mother stepped it up and kicked butt with a Baseball Bat, Psychic powers and Pizza.

Oh, an FYI, Mother 3's Rhythm battle system is harder on an emu cause of the sync time, never had a prob on my cart tho.

  3. Ok, I am looking to do a Mother 3 remix. And I'm considering using some WW2ish type sound effects, perhaps marching effects I am not quite sure but anyways. I was wondering a couple things. What is a good Synthesizer (or even Synth Program) to use and also what are some good Databases for SFX to look into? Would really appreciate the help. I want to make my first remix, a remix to remember.

  4. I almost put Metroid Prime on the list. I'll probably get to that too eventually, but it's not as high a priority for me.

Looks like KH2 and Katamari Damacy are winning out.

    SPOILER WARNING!~

KH2 definately would rock, especially the "Steamboat Willie World" Battle Music. And "Katamari on the Rocks" or (I don't know why but it cracks me up) "Fugue #7777"

  5. No. It does. She was inspired by the very creator of the game with that kind of a mindset and the entire game's plot was based fully around it. Also, the interesting thing about Aeris was not when she was alive, but when she passed on. She sort of lived vicariously in Cloud and was basically elevated to another level posthumously unlike many videogame characters who are more or less forgotten or don't have much impact on the story near the end the way Aeris did.

You can harp on how she is 'not inspired, not inspired, not inspired', but that's pure subjectivity. Personally, she is one of the most interesting additions that created a lot of controversy in an RPG as never before really. I admit she is a love it or hate it character and that death is still controversial today. I for one love Sakaguchi for having the balls to do that.

Also, I'm not sure she was perfect as it was that she was just incredibly meek even for an RPG character. In most RPGs, most characters at least put up an effort to live through things and not willfully sacrifice themselves. Even when they do, like Fire Bringer, the twins in FF4, Alys in Phantasy Star lore to Nei in Phantasy Star 2, they still went down fighting to the end. In a way, I think her passiveness and connection to the lifestream made her more of an avatar than a human character.

As for addressing "WHY ARE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME NOW" posts, it was 10 year launch anniversary for North American release like a week ago. And that Crisis Core game for the PSP got really good reviews in Famitsu. AND the FF7 trailer/remake news never stops. Never.

Yeah, I can agree that she was inspired by personal experience of the creators putting it into their story. Sure thats great. But typically (and I am not vouching for all gamers) most people who play RPG's want to play a story w/well developed characters and an engrossing plot which, yeah, isn't full of plotholes.

Another note, on creators personal interest in their games. I really don't think most gamers would be interested in (for instance) knowing that Giygas' dialogue in the final battle of Earthbound is inspired by (and I take a direct quote from Wikipedia) "a traumatic childhood experience where he (Shigesato Itoi the creator) mistakenly walked into an adult movie theatre and caught a glimpse of a sex/rape scene in the 1957 movie Kenpei and the Dismembered Beauty". Not exactly something you want to know, BUT, surely interesting trivial material.

I agree, Sakaguchi is a genius, when it comes to putting together a game. Final Fantasy VII however, is just a giant cash cow now for Square-Enix, which fanboys and fangirls easily sway into. NOT TO SAY, that some of the titles they are releasing aren't good, BUT, it is going a little overboard.

  6. Star Ocean 3? Sure it had a nice-ish ending but that was so over the top convoluted, I was more confused at how hard the writing fell off near the end than anything. Fate was good, then the rest.... video game nerd final boss....

Um. You're WRONG on that one. On almost all points. Fei was an emotional/moody kid for like 90% of the game, he barely had any goals and he was just being moody and running from place to place fighting enemies he sees in his dreams and flashbacks that have resurfaced in the present. In a way, he was similar to Cloud than being dissimilar. Cloud was far from being moody but more like his emotions were broken. And he had to fight to get his past back just the same. Cloud being whiny? Do people even remember these games anymore? And Cloud not showing emotions? But that was like the entire point of the entire story and his back story AND the connection to Jenova, etc etc yadda yadda. I don't want to bother elaborating the obvious.

Also, I don't understand why people are seemingly so miffed at imperfect heroes. I'd rather have the main character be an actual CHARACTER than a caricature who really does nothing but be goody two shoes for the entirety of the game.

Ya know, your right, I'm thinking about it now, that I am a lot more cognitive than I was when I wrote that last respone. Fei was pretty whiny too.

  7. attention offtopic

    this is a good thread

    fucking POST IN IT

OCR has personally inspired me as a person and actively helped me prove to people that VG music is not just noise. My buddy Jon at work, avid outdoors man, works out, bikes, athletic and probably someone you would never see playing video games more than once in a blue moon. I got him jamming w/me in the car to OC Remix tunes. He was howling to a Tetris remix (Thirty-Plus Mix by R3FORGED) I had. I played a SMW remix (Monstrous Turtles! by zircon) and he looked at me and said "Holy shit, Super Mario World" which was a surprise to see a extremely casual gamer remeber something like that. I could say that the social influence of OCR has gotten so far that, I went to a rave and heard JENOVAD Trance by FFMusic Dj, and I yelled in my friends ear right when I heard the first note (I listened to it at least 300-500 times in my life maybe more...I can recognize THE first note) "JENOVA REMIX" she looked at me funny and when she finally heard that first recognizable note from the song, she was like "SWEET".

I'm curious as to how OCR has influenced other people.

  8. They chose to release their games for the Playstation One instead of N64 because it had the horsepower to handle 2400 Megabytes worth of cutscenes, soundtrack and games on a mere 4 discs. They could not have feasibly put Final Fantasy 7 on a cartridge, and the same was true of 8 and 9. Not to mention the fact that the PS1 had the larger audience. .

I have to agree, I don't think I would have enjoyed FF games during the PS/N64 generation on the N64. I am a tad Nintendo biased, yes, but I feel (even if they could have fit FF7-9 on a cartride) I wouldn't have enjoyed it on the N64. I would have felt goofy first of all holding that big ass goofy looking controller, and getting into an epic fantasy world adventure. The only good RPGs on N64 were...NONE. The only good "near RPG" games, more action adventure, were Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, LoZ:OoT (Majora's Mask...was...somewhat disappointing), Paper Mario and thats about it. I'm starting to digress a bit so onto the next paragraph.

Now I'm going to say this, cause I'm going more toward the subject of console popularity of the generation. Playstation had it all. Good companies backing them up, state of the art console technology that blew games of that time out of the water. Companies thought of the limitations a cartridge had to them hardware and performance wise and chose Playstation to be the better bet. N64, simply up there with the bad ideas by Nintendo not to exclude the Virtual Boy (cringe). Cartridges were outdated, CD's were the up and coming format. Especially w/the dawn of the memory card. OMG WHAT?!! YOU MEAN WE CAN SAVE OUR GAME AND TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE WITHOUT HAVING TO FEAR THAT ONE DAY THE SAVE BATTERY MAY DIE AND WE LOSE OUR INSANELY AWESOME PROGRESS?! Save batteries. Outdated. Sega and NEC had the right idea when they put out Sega CD and Turbo Grapix CD. Unfortunately for them, people were still skeptical abouts CDs since it was a new and "foreign" concept.

The memory card became king. Not only was it a good way to profit for the console manufacturer, but it also gave the player a sense of security w/their save data. NOT to mention, you could rent a game, and STILL have your personal save data after you took it back to the rental store. HOW COOL IS THAT?!! I just remembered, I beat Final Fantasy 7 for the first time ever, on a 7 day rental in 45 hours and didn't actually own the game until 2004. Anyways, it was the innovative thing at the time. All those reasons struck me as another reason to buy a PS1. And by the time the PS2 came out (Got one the day it came out...because the PS1 impressed me so much) I had a collection where i had 6 PS games for each N64 game I owned (which was about 13). Even today, innovation takes the market.

Look at the Wii, everyone wants it. Some people don't know why, others do...ITS JUST COOL. Not to mention its inexpensive, innovative, creative, fun, casual, unintentionally health stimulating and (DAMNIT, way to go Shadowolf, you got me on a RANT) connective. Its going to sell, because yea, its cool to play Resident Evil 4 by aiming and shooting, its cool to literally cut the shit out of a zombie, its cool to throw a football to your teammate while playing against someone on the other side of the world. It definitely piques the interest of parents too, because it gets their kids off their asses. Doesn't let them sit there the whole time, and at some time they will get tired of standing waving a control around, find something else to do for a while, and when they feel like it, come back and delve back into their game; instead of mindlessly playing games for hours straight sitting on your ass and eating potato chips (not that there is anything wrong with that, and we're all guilty of having one of those 24 hour or more sessions.)

Square "is going to cater to who can sell their products and gets their story out" as Shadowolf put it. And I have to say, I don't think hardcore FF players are going to want to wave a Wii remote around to select a command for the next action. They are going to want to have a traditional, relaxing and mind engrossing intimate session with that involved FF plotline (save FF-X2....horrible story, awesome battle system).

    So yea....

  9. I know there's another FF7 thread, but this thread is about whether or not you've been moved by a game.

    FF7 SPOILER

    ...

    ...

    ...

    ...

Like Noizrocx said, I didn't get attached to her at all. In fact the only reason I ever wanted to use her was because of her healing limit break. That was it. Can't say I felt much of anything when she died. Except that killing her made Sephiroth cooler. Hahaha.

    Star Ocean 3 SPOILER

    ...

    ...

    ...

    ...

Star Ocean 3 really had me going during the ending though. That game was full of perfect cliches, stereo types, cheesiness all over, but when fate said, "That means I'm still alive!" and then all those memories flashed by I could feel the tears trying to creep up on me and my throat even got all swollen like when you cry, and I know exactly why. 95% of it was Motoi Sakuraba's sickly sweet music. That dude always does it to me. ^_^

Righto (wish I would have thought of that more generally when I named the thread...blah...but who cares, if you haven't played it by now....you 1, either already know about it, or 2 will never play it. Maybe one of the mods will rename the thread "Heartwrenching VG moments (Spoiler warning)" ::hint hint:: (jk, lol). But thats all beside the point.

    SPOILER WARNING...

I think a game has so much more substance to it when you can relate to a character. In Xenogears for instance. You can relate to Fei, in the sense that he is struggling to figure out who he is as a person. He learns through his experiences that there are parts of him he didn't know exist. And underwent the personal trials (for a lack of better wording) to find out for himself who he was. UNLIKE Cloud, who is a whiny spikey haired punk who gets headaches, Fei has a goal in mind after he decides what he wants to do. Cloud just kind of goes with it, not really caring about the end result. The only time I truely saw any emotion in Cloud was the last cutscene where Tifa was falling off the airship and Cloud runs, dives and rescue. That is THE ONLY point I find to be at all appealing about Cloud, where he finally decides to be a man. Not to make it Cloud bashing session, cloud is a badass in some senses. Cloud was poorly developed too...and a confusing mess as well.

  10. To be honest, I shed one tear...

    ...and then fragmented my controller.

it was pretty much act 2 of the unncessary deaths. Nei's was worse for me. I didn't talk about video games for 3 days... to anyone.

    SPOILER WARNING....although PS4 is almost...13 years old

Ya know, I never finished PS2, I couldn't really get into the slow gameplay, although I played a ways in. Phantasy Star series itself has always had a profoundly darker storyline to it series in general though. When Alys died I just wanted to grab Zio by the stupid throat and strangle him. Her character was more developed that Aeris, and so was Nei. I thought Aeris was underdeveloped for as long as you got to know her. Maybe Crisis Core (god help the flood of milking the FF7 cash cow), will develop her better.

  11. Ok, I love this one. Who cried when Aeris died? I didn't I kinda laughed and was shocked but I didn't cry. I think the first time I cried or felt emotionally bonded to a character was Phantasy Star 4. I'm just curious. Because I really feel it is overhyped that people say "Oh my gosh, Aeris dying is the most shocking moment in video game history" So just wondering what peoples thoughts are.

  12. OK. I can assume almost everyone here has either heard of or played Earthbound (Mother) Now, anyone who has played Mother 1 or 3 would it be worth buying an import copy of either game 1 or 3. I own Earthbound....one of my favorite RPG's actually. A cult classic if i may.

  13. Simply put. Excellent.

I have been frequenting OCR since 2002 as I mentioned in another thread. I must say, I was very impressed by the tracks I never expected to hear remixed in my life. Sometimes you hear a game track, when you play it and think "I don't know if there would be any other way to hear this track". But yet again, OCR has proved me wrong :)

I definately dig the remix of "Birth of a God," "Beginning of the End" by bLiNd. I never expected to hear a remix of that track. And bLiNd really pulled it off to the point where I got a chill down my spine, not only because of how well it was remixed, but also that part of FF7 i remember very clearly and was essentially one of my favorite battles in the game (despite how wretchedly easy it was).

Xaleph took me by surprise with "Son of Chance". The remix itself, took the "Shinra Company" theme to a whole new level. I felt a more sinister feel to the theme than originally. Rufus was a punk, but damn, Xaleph can make Rufus feel more evil than Kefka.

"JENOVA Celestial" was another remix that just makes you smile (well me anyways ). Granted I have heard many "J-E-N-O-V-A" remixes, this one sticks out. If you've ever wondered why the characters "dance" when they are waiting in battle....idly for their next command, bLiNd is the reason behind that. Especially when kicking J-E-N-O-V-A's lame face in.

I don't even know how to describe "Black Wing Metamorphasis" other than. All the collaborative remixers (bLiNd, Fishy, pixietricks, Sixto Sounds, Steffan Andrews, Suzumebachi, tefnek) just took "One-Winged Angel" to a level of awesomeness I didn't expect. I think Sephiroth is a lamo but, you made him a serious bada** in my book. The feeling of "Trans Siberian Orchestra" meets "Tetris" crosses my mind when I hear the transition from the 8-bit into the instrumental segment. Simply AMAZING.

The entire album itself is AMAZING, those are just a few that stuck out in my mind. :)
