  1. I've started a challenge where I only work on a new song for a maximum of a week before calling it "finished". The idea is that it will help me get over some of my perfectionist and/or analysis paralysis issues and start releasing more music. This is the second such song I've worked on, and is probably one of the best things I've ever made. I usually produce electronic music, so this was a huge departure from my usual style, but I really love how it worked out!

  2. Hello all! It's been a very long time since I've visited these forums, and a long time in general since working on anything music-related that got complete enough to get feedback on, but I had this idea the other night, and haven't been able to really think about anything else until I started working on it, so here we are!

The idea was basically just "I wonder what the Dragon Roost Island theme would sound like in a Bossa Nova style?" Most of my production knowledge is in EDM, so what followed was a lot of research (not nearly enough yet, I think), and then a few pages of notes trying to conform the theme to this new style and time signature. I'm pretty proud of what I have so far, certainly more proud of this than anything else I've made in the past few years, but I've reached a point where I'm not sure how to proceed. My personal thoughts right now are that the track progresses a little too slowly for my tastes, and I think the transition from the "A" melody to the "B" melody needs a lot of work, but I think I've been stuck in my own head a bit too long to have any ideas. If anyone could lend a fresh pair of ears and a new perspective, I'd really appreciate it!

The guidelines for posting say to include a link to the original track being remixed, so here that is. I'm specifically referencing the OST version for the bassline, but that's the only real difference I'm aware of between the game version and the OST version.

  3. Heh, alright, next time I'm over there, I'll see if I can at least email myself the project file. I'm not sure when it'll be, though, cause I just found out that their 1-year old has abnormal head swelling, and I have no idea how that's going right now. Obviously that's going to take priority over all of this since he's practically my little brother.

  4. First off, been awhile since I posted anything on this site. Mostly been working on original stuff. In any case, this is something I just started doing today, wanted to get some feedback on it. Usually I do hardstyle, this was my first ever attempt at dubstep, especially dubstep that I created the sounds for (played around with some samples a long time ago). Lemme know what you think! As a point of interest/reference, I'm only 2 hours in on this.

After the third revision, I called it finished, now looking for final tips before putting it up for mod review.

  5. Well, with my hardstyle, I actually sidechain the tail end of the kick to the punch of the kick (cause I built the sound using multiple instruments and samples), so that you get a nice punch that doesn't change pitch, and then the tail of the kick comes in, and can be pitched without frequencies clashing.

But thank you, this let's me know that I'm on the right track, at least (and, to be honest, it reminded me that I was using the compressor part of a limiter for sidechaining. I had forgotten)

  6. Hopefully this is the right place for this:

I mostly make dance tunes (hardstyle, if you know what that is). And, from what I can tell, compression is really important in this. However, my "skill" with compression goes about as far as putting a FabFilter Pro-C on my master channel to make the overall levels stay under 0 db. I've looked on this site, and I haven't seen anything for compression (mostly the theory/application of it, I'm not looking for a specific "This is how you compressors" tutorial type thing), so I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. This is one of the few things I'm a bit scared to use my Google-fu on, because if I end up with something completely wrong, I will have no idea how to fix it.

    Edit:

Found a nice little overall look of compressing in one of Zircon's tutorials (didn't see it at first, because it didn't have anything about "compression" in the title), but I'm looking for something a bit more in-depth.

  7. Well, Camelphat has a nice bitcrusher in it, among other things. It has has various filters (bandpass, hi-pass, low-pass, etc) that can have LFO or X-Y modulation on them. So that's a good catch-all. D16 makes a good bitcrusher called Decimort. I haven't played with most of the settings yet, because the default sound is pretty amazing. Hope that helps.

  8. Well, for the compression, I'm actually using FabFilter Pro-C. Though, I will admit that when it comes to compression, I'm a bit helpless, so I only have the one compressor set on the master channel. I used the default setting, too, with the threshold taken down a little bit, cause all I was trying to do was get it below 0 dB.

As far as the kick goes, I'm happy with the tail, but I was using Junglist for the punch this time, which is weird for me cause I usually use Drumazon. I think I'm gonna switch back xD

  9. So I haven't been online on this site in....quite near ages. I've been trying to perfect my art, and while I'm nowhere close, I'm a lot better than the last time I was here. Last time, I never really posted anything original, just stuff my friend and I could come up with together.

Anyway, I'm back with a Portal 2 themed song. I put it in the "Originals" forum because it only uses vocal clips from the game, and therefore, I think, probably does not count as a remix, correct?

Anyway, the genre is hardstyle, the DAW is FL Studio, and there was a total of 18 hours and 46 minutes spent on this track. Let me know what you think!

  10. Hey, back again. I'm quickly discovering that I have no idea how to make stuff on my own. I'm hoping that'll change when I finally buckle down and attempt to learn bass guitar like I've been planning to do for ages. But in the meantime, I've sort of taken up post production on my friend's music, and, according to him, I'm doing really well at that. Also, trying to take up DJing, but that's kind of hard to do without any physical hardware to work with. Saving up the cash for some decent equipment. Thanks for your help, and I hope that next time I come back, I've learned enough to actually make something of my own, rather than copying other stuff or messing with finished tracks. In other news, for some reason, I can come up with nice tunes in my head, but I'm never able to get the notes down in fruity loops, on a piano, or anything. Closest I ever came was when I made a really, really, basic bassline one day just messing around on a friends bass. They seemed to like it though xD It only consisted of 5 notes >.>

Mostly finished version. Sounds like the only way this thing is going back to the workshop is if people have any suggestions for improvements. Please, leave some feedback, we would like to know what you think. Oh yeah, and this has turned more from me plugging a friend's song, to me plugging a collaboration between me and a friend. Apparently I helped enough to merit credit in the Artists part of the data. Makes me happy xD But seriously. let us know what you think.

    EDIT

Listening to the rendered version, I'm probably taking this back into the workshop for some mastering. The volume is all over the place most of the time...any suggestions on the best way to do this would be greatly appreciated.

  12. A thing my friend did in FL Studio 9. He's looking for feedback, so here we go ^^

    img.php?fid=543

    EDIT:

Added a bassline, took out the melody in some parts. Overall made it tons better.

    img.php?fid=544

    EDIT:

Possibly final version of this song. Changed the bassline up a little bit. Added some more melody in one part. Changed the vocals completely.

    img.php?fid=559

  13. Also, don't worry too much about mp3 quality, most people won't hear the difference between a 128k mp3 and a wav, anyway.

on the other hand, try using good rendering settings, that is high-rate interpolation and dithering.

Meh, doesn't matter anyway, did a full system restore on my computer, backed up everything, it seems, but the .flp of this song >.<

Took a crash course in Music Theory though, so I may be doing original works soon...

  14. Alright, I will definitely try that. I have what I was referring to as the final version because I was done messing with it since I didn't have any more ideas on improving it, so I will be working more as I go. Ignore the "Final" bit of the newest revision. What started as a "learning the ropes" project in automation clips and Vanguard has turned into a full-fledged project. Anyway, got the streaming MP3 version of the newest one, as well as a full quality wav version on request.

  15. Thanks for all the replies! Didn't think the response would be that strong! And yeah, I've pretty much just started dabbling in random stuff. Downloaded a couple VSTs (Vanguard and Z3ta+) and starting with Hardstyle music, as that's what I'm currently into, and it's a lot of fun to do it in FLStudio, especially now that I have 9 XXL Producer's (woot woot lifetime upgrades, best idea ever). I actually posted a remix (sort of) of The Power of the Mind (by Headhunterz) in the WIP/Other forum, if any of you want to check it out and tell me what you think. I did the whole thing mostly by myself, getting the notes right for the melody took forever and I ended up getting my best friend (who knows everything about music ever) to help me out a bit at the end.

  16. Hi, practicing with Fruity Loops and I managed to create this semi-decent tune utilizing the melody from the Headhunterz track Power of the Mind, the Qlimax 2007 Anthem. Lemme know what you think! Also, if anyone can help me with the EQ of it, I have no idea how to use either of the Parametric EQs included with Fruity Loops Studio 9

    img.php?fid=486

    Revision One:

    img.php?fid=487

I messed with the beginning a bit, I'm finally able to do things that I wanted to do with certain stuff because I understand The Automation Control or whatever it's called. I think this revision sounds a crapton better than my original post. Lemme know what you think!

    "Final" Revision":

    img.php?fid=496

Not actually the final revision, as I finally got some feedback on it. Anyway, this one is a streaming version, so you don't have to download it. It may take a few seconds to load, especially on older computers. Messed with the Parametric EQ a bit to make the bass stronger in some parts, definitely had some serious Automation Clips going, and, all in all, I think this is my best solo experiment in FL Studio so far ^^

    Note:

I've just now noticed that you can't stream wav's from the WIP site, so I'm working on uploading MP3s. These will probably be lower quality, but it will work for those of you who don't want to download. Expect those sometime later today.

  17. So, I know I have posted a lot of "my friend did this" stuff in the past, so here's my first real submission. I did this completely on my own (you should be able to tell by the distinct difference in musical talent xD). I'm really only happy with the drums in this one, so I'm working a ton on the rest of it, but I think it's really good compared to some of the other crap I've put out before. Let me know what you all think!
