  1. you could say that nintendo would sell more if they had wider appeal but at the same time nintendo's fanbase has repeatedly shunned darker, grittier games whether they be by nintendo or third parties. how did zombiU sell? metroid was never a cash cow was it? how about majora's mask, didn't most of nintendo's fans just bitch that it wasn't as good as OoT? don't know the sales figures offhand but I don't recall madworld being a big system seller or anything. most of these aren't even M rated games and nintendo's primary demographic wanted nothing to do with them, can't blame nintendo for crawling deeper and deeper into the "family friendly" niche, that's what we consumers have demanded.

  2. tripping is just scratching the surface. i mean, its definitely a metaphor for the philosophy of brawl, which was restricting movement, the game literally punishing the player for playing :P

This is what I took out of it, as bad as tripping near an ice climbers is, it's not the worst thing ever on it's own-but it even existing spoke volumes about sakurai's design philosophy for that game, so I am hoping that it's removal is also part of a larger philosophy shift

Air dodges...as much as some of my melee playing friends have disagreed, I don't think it makes a big difference in offline play, bad connection wifi is the only place where you don't get punished for air dodging repeatedly for no reason anyway.

Melee's air dodge allowing wavedashing/landing to occur to me is the most significant part of that, the crazy movement options of Melee are a lot of what makes it so entertaining. While I certainly don't expect that to return, I'd like to see the ground mobility in Smash 4 opened up a little

  3. Bastion and Fez, AAA games

(Bastion is exactly the kind of game I LOVE though, I haven't played Fez yet)

And indeed my preference for more colorful art direction isn't anything to do with mood, a lot of my favorite games are not over the top happy, I don't believe a game having more mature or dark themes should relegate it to being dominated by brown and grey.

In the past Nintendo has even made good use of this, a lot of the foreboding and sinister atmosphere in games like Majora's Mask and Super Metroid comes from skillful color selections.

  4. From what I've seen, most people liked Zelda best (graphically-speaking) with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. The more realistic-ish approach is what most people enjoy, I think. Toon Link is a whole other monster; I don't really count that.

I wouldn't classify OoT/MM along with TP at all, those games are much more colorful, maybe not quite SS/WW/LTTP but maybe more of a happy medium. I find 90% of the games that try to be "realistic" to simply look boring to me, I get enough realism from real life, I like video games to have something more fantastical about them.

Personally I think SS' art style is close to perfect, the character style maybe being it's one imperfection(some of the faces...) but the environments in that game are gorgeous.

Graphics/art style are the last things I would criticize Nintendo for, there is a lot to criticize with the controller gimmicks or the narrowed focus of their first party lineup or the terrible online or Wii U's awful OS...but dammit they need to be COMMENDED for being one of the last major devs out there that still has some color in their games, most AAA games at this point look like shit to me.

  5. 14793_541156642607482_1745015574_n.jpg

Link and Mario were like killer powerful in the original. They were dumbed down quite a bit in the later games.

Melee looked fine and Brawl was more the fault of the art direction trying to be more realistic, where Mario and Zelda have always looked best with a more stylized look. Skyward Sword's influence on smash 4 will be a glorious thing.

I'm also noticing that Mario is getting angrier and angrier with each passing Smash Bros...

They also got rid of things the Tourney folks clung onto for Melee to that gave them competitive edge over newer players. Unfortunately of course, Tourney folk usually do not like this game and have stuck with Melee.

This was the idea but I don't think it actually worked, top players in Brawl are incredibly consistent in defeating lower and mid level players and if anything it actually seems -harder- to improve because you have to do so at a completely fundamental level, aside from a few things like ice climbers death grabs there isn't anything you can practice that makes you significantly more dangerous. The minimized tech skill required to play the game puts an even higher emphasis on things that may not even be trainable(reflexes, thought processing speed, memory, clutchness etc).

  6. 64 is the least talked about because it's the oldest and most people have long since moved on. Melee remains relevant because it's fans are extremely passionate and the changes made in Brawl put a lot of people off

SSB was a ton of fun back in the day, I haven't played it in forever but lots of great memories. As I already mentioned, I would like to see throws as common KO attacks again as it was in SSB

  7. Fair point that 20 years ago I wasn't overly concerned with Microsoft trying to monitor me 24/7 via kinect or Sony's long history of anti-consumer behavior(or in those days Nintendo monopolizing the industry like gangsters) - that's part of getting old though, you become responsible and have to consider what you are supporting.

This is still a separate issue however from the fact that I don't think the next generation of consoles is hype worthy to begin with, Sony and Microsoft are going further down the road of producing watered down PCs and Nintendo is also going further down the path that made the Wii a disappointment for many of us. Beyond Nintendo trying to throw the most unergonomic and unintuitive controllers imaginable at us, there isn't much that makes the console experience unique or desirable at this point.

I also do still make a habit of playing games at random, particularly on steam I'll buy anything that looks kinda interesting when it's on sale, but I also have a lot of 360 and Wii titles that I bought on a whim or recommendation that I didn't do any research into. I've acquired more 360 games in the past year than I ever owned for PS1, almost as many as I had for SNES, I have to say my experience with those consoles was much more enjoyable. I may in fact be a bitter old man but my lack of appreciation for present day mainstream game design certainly isn't for lack of exposure.

  8. I mean, you guys can paint it any way you want, but Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid, Wario Ware, Smash Bros...they're becoming the new CoD/FIFA of Nintendo.

Metroid has never been a really mainstream series in spite of how highly regarded it is by its cult audience, and Nintendo's attempt at making it more mainstream by being more narrative driven was also a complete train wreck from which the series may never return

I have kinda felt like Mario spinoffs fall into this category for a long time however

  9. People getting angry on the internet isn't the same as actually refusing to buy games that they want, particularly for a console they already own.

It's kind of a moot point because I also think there's little chance MS pulls a Sony and removes functionality after the fact, but it's pretty well established that boycotts aren't typically successful. I think this would be especially true considering the target audience

  10. I think they've learned something here. If they turn back from this later, gamers can very well say "well we bought the console but we aren't buying any games for it if you bring back these policies", which is just as bad.

Consumers collectively aren't that organized, intelligent, and certainly don't have that much will power

  11. Well I know the speed of the game is between Melee and Brawl, and they've already said that multiple air dashes are in (at this point though, so that could change)... it sounds like they're throwing out what didn't work for brawl (like tripping) and taking the good of melee (like most of the speed)...

Air dodges? Someone told me that on AIM, that was actually a particular thing I wasn't happy with, I thought it was better when there was a big risk with air dodging, in Brawl it's punishable if read but the consequences aren't as bad on average and it diminishes the advantageous position

Also some aspects of 64 should be considered, like in that game throws were much more common kill options IIRC, by Brawl that had gone far enough in the other direction where just predictably block camping at high % is a really good strategy vs a lot of characters

Also on throws, I'm biased as hell here because I played Snake a lot and always found it fun but I'd like to see a few characters have okis/tech chase throws like his down throw, I love that aspect of the game. Snake is probably not coming back but hopefully GAW still has his anyway

  12. Hard to assess the mechanics for a game that isn't out, but I'm not sure that the Melee/Brawl combination route is a good thing, aside from being technically streamlined for people like me who have slow klutzy fingers, I'm not sure that Brawl really brought anything positive to the table.

Wii Fit Trainer is the biggest gimmick character in the whole series so I'd be skeptical of that. I don't personally care however if the game has some oddballs, Brawl's roster was pretty good IMO with the one notable exception of Mewtwo's absence-second most iconic pokemon, they dropped the ball on that one

Tripping already confirmed gone, this is good on many levels

  13. Galaxies were really more like a follow up to the Shadow Mario levels of Sunshine, linear, kind of a 3D imitation of the 2D style.

idc if it's a "mainline" Mario or not, I think it's more questionable that Nintendo always has two or three Mario titles in development(or more if you're counting spinoffs) when they have dormant franchises. Mario is great but can we get some Star Fox or F-Zero? Maybe even something new(that isn't a tech demo for the newest controller gimmick)?

  14. The Wii's shell is pretty solid, the disc drive seems to be what 90%+ of peoples problem tends to be-moving parts and all that(but somehow Nintendo had this figured out with the GameCube, which was definitely built like a tank)

  15. Yeah, sucks that the Wii disc reader was cheap junk(I went through 3 of them myself), but that's kind of the standard approach to hardware malfunction these days, Sony for instance had to be forced to fix the PS2 DREs by lawsuit. And the save data thing? Kind of an unreasonable request. I'd agree that Nintendo is a shadow of their former selves as game developers, but as far as the hardware failure side of things goes it's not like you're going to do any better with MS or Sony.

  16. This E3 is, as has been widely documented, comfort food for fans who have been neglected for five or so years.

Really closer to a full decade at this point, and even then I wouldn't say so.

    Still no Star Fox

    Still no F-Zero

    Nothing on the next Zelda

    Mario's had very mixed reception

Retro is still doing Donkey Kong, and while DKCR was a great game, it still feels like a misuse of their talents

Metroid is probably dead after the train wreck known as Other M

Still excited for SSB4 even with some skepticism about it, it may wind up being just a slightly better Brawl but I think it will fix enough of what was broken to be pretty good. No tripping, a legit fighting game dev collaborating on it, maybe Brawl 2.0 but I do expect it to be an improvement

  17. The reaction towards DKCTF was also sad. DKCR was an amazing game, yet people were mad about it because they wanted Metroid... I think we'll see Metroid, but just not this year.

After waggle roll, I'm skeptical of DKCTF until it's confirmed that the game isn't gamepad touch screen controls only.

In all seriousness though, there was some mysterious hype around Retro some time ago, I think a DKCR sequel was a predictable move and people were expecting something more ambitious for their next project.

David Wise involvement has me excited, would've liked to have seen more original music in DKCR, maybe this time

  18. Did you expect him to NOT be built around projectiles? I mean, shooting is kind of his thing. And jumping.

Having a lot of projectiles isn't the same as having nearly your entire moveset be projectiles, even Samus has always had a lot of melee attacks. It is kind of unprecedented

And my comment was less about expectation and more just noting how obnoxious a character to fight against MM is probably going to be if he has much ability to micromanage these projectiles like a TL

Time outs galore confirmed for Smash 4

  19. I took a look at the Wind Waker HD trailer again. Pulled this nugget out.

    WWHDhuds.PNG

    Click for a larger version.

Check the D-Pad icon on the upper-left side. Wind Waker, Cannon, and Salvage Arm all mapped to it. Note that though the Grappling Hook is mapped to Y, the bombs aren't currently equipped. Which means no need to equip those whenever you need the cannon this time around. Odds are the same will apply to the Salvage Arm as well.

Also note that A makes you go faster, a much needed function for traveling the seas.

By the way, that's Spectacle Island (B-3), home of the Barrel Shoot minigame and possible Ghost Ship destination, with the Mother & Child Isles (B-2) in the distance.

Good to see some actual gameplay improvements and that the game isn't just a ridiculously gratuitous use of bloom lighting, was hoping for some info on the next Zelda but WWHD is looking more appealing to me now anyway
