So, I'm working on this right now and I'd like to know, should I keep the intro, or is it a bit too disconnected from the main body to be having around?
-
So, I've got yet another minor update.
What I've done this time is I've added more reverb to the tracks and I've replaced all the synth channels with new patches (all done with TAL-Noisemaker, since I've gotten pretty comfortable with it, thanks to Rozovian's recommending it to newbs such as myself).
As for actual new material and replacing the drums, piano, and strings, I wasn't able to in the bit of time I had this evening before being booted off my PC, but I'll see what I can do when I'm back on it (circa 3 hours from now). Hopefully an update fulfilling those goals should.come within the next 24-48 hours.
In the meantime, would you say this is an improvement over the last version?

No, but I did get real upset as a kid when I'd hear Bohemian Rhapsody. (I thought the first ballad-y part was really sad at the time.) I will admit that I came close when my school's orchestra played the 2nd movement of New World Symphony and I had an amazing vantage point (I was in the percussion section); that movement is still among my favorite pieces of music.

I love a sweeping, epic feeling to a song. Like, when I'm able to imagine hi-rez desert-scapes or battlefields, or skylines to it, I'm probably going to be loving it. Also, I really enjoy it when all sorts of timbres and layers are thrown around. That always can pique my interest.

Read soundcloud description. Not seriously anything but a reverb test.
It is good on the lulz!
I liked what you were doing with the odd time (5/4, correct?). I dunno if you even want to expand on it, but I'd say that's a good basic idea to work from.

to crypto: thanks for the sample recommendations.
G-Mixer: The synths, yeah, I could do more to dirty them up. What I'd like to know is what with? Distortion?
The strings, the current ones (and the piano), they're going to get replaced with stronger samples/vst plugins. I'll also center the strings and make sure that they're adding thickness.
As for reverb and delay, I will add more. One question about that, how do you tell if you've added enough, as opposed to too much or little?
I appreciate the mixing offer, however I really need the firsthand experience of taking it on myself. I've already learned LOADS, thus far, and this thing's far from finished.
And this goes to everyone: As always, thanks for the feedback; your words are always appreciated!

I made a lot of changes, instrument-wise, and balance-wise. I also made more use of panning.
Still stuck, in terms of what to do with the actual music, but it sounds better at least.
-
Thanks for the input, man; that's a lot of good info!
I will definitely take the time to re-balance everything. What I think happened was, see, there used to be different drums that were way too quiet, so I brought in different ones that were much punchier. I didn't actually change their track's volume on the DAW. As for the narrowness, you have a good point! I really didn't make much use of the panning, never moving anything more than 60% from center. That will change!
As for next update, expect these issues addressed, as well as some new material. (Speaking honestly, I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to go from here, but I'll get it sorted out. I am set on making this thing a thing.)
(And of course the intro would remind you of Bond. It's meant to be a ripoff of his song.

Please declare your personal favorite freeware vsti piano or piano sample/.sf2

I've got a sample/soundfont player on me, so playing those shouldn't be a problem. I could probably see myself replacing the piano and strings with better patches, yes?
-
I've changed everything from 0:42 on to be more trance-y. Or attempted to, at least.
I've also made efforts to make improvements on the instruments, especially the drums. I haven't been able to get Battery installed and ready, but I've found an appropriate 909 emulator for the time being.
-
Well, I thank you for recommending this sampler. I may have to go ahead and acquire it.
-
Great coverage, man; good seeing that it seems to actually work. Definitely sounds like the Wii U could be a real solid system. Can't see myself getting one in a few years, as A. I'm broke and B. I only got a Wii last December.
-
Hmm.. since I'm definitely going to switch to some different drums, I'd like to know, can Battery do a good TR-909 emulation? After hearing a number of trance-like remixes and some non-OC-trance, that seems to be THE drum sound.

Having only recently gotten into electronic music outside of VG stuff, I'm really enjoying the early Aphex Twin.
-
Thanks for the input.
Looks like I'll be doing some research, eh?
-
I've made changes to the instruments. Hopefully it doesn't sound so Genesis-y. Nothing else has been changed yet, as A: I want to get the instruments to a point where they're acceptable and B: I don't quite know where to go to next. What sort of stuff should I be doing if I want it to be trance-y from 0:42 onwards?
-
I'm working on a mix, but the thing is, the lead patches, they always end up sounding Genesis-y/Mega-Drive-like and need to be thicker and more 'modern'; I'm looking to give them 'pizzazz'. What do you typically do to make your synth sounds interesting and ear-catching?
-
The program I'm using? Reaper.
The samples I'm using? Mostly made with DSK Bluez and Oranze. Will try different instruments, I suppose.
Once again thank you for pointing out this issue; your feedback is always appreciated and I will do something about it soon.
-
So, here's an update addressing some of the problems.
No new content, yet. I'm thinking of going to the chorus next from here? You guys want that, or do you want some more build-up type stuff?
-
Firstly, thanks for the feedback, man! I really appreciate your word.
Secondly, increasing the bass volume and fixing the vibes near the beginning, those I will attempt to fix by the next update.
The beat issue, I'm not quite sure I can fix right yet, as I'm not sure what specifically your talking about, in regards to the beat. Am I throwing in too many complicated, syncopated stuff that could be simplified into something more appealing? Or is it not syncopated enough?

What he said!
Something I found that can help when trying to make your thing deviate from the original is take the key the song's in and noodle around in it on your weapon of choice. Do that for a while and you may stumble upon something that could add a lot to your mix.
Also, (this is more of a mind thing, so bear with me) try listening to your mix over and over and really think about sort of atmosphere its got, maybe even imagine the sort of setting or environment it could be played in. I find that this can sometimes really give me inspiration. Your mileage may vary, though; this isn't guaranteed to work for everyone.
Keep on working at it, though, and you'll make some progress!

And here's yet another update! This one comes with an intro (which totally rips off James Bond; I'd always been reminded of that theme when listening to this song. I initially intended to really bring that out, but ended up with this trance-y, dance-y thing. Then, I realized I needed a real intro and made the most of the opportunity.)

When I'm taking a difficult test or working on a project the night before it's due, I often get Sonic 3's final boss song in my head. Powerful tune!
