  1. Absolutely awesome stuff! I love the djent and the crazy effects like around 3:45. The cymbals feel a bit buried, but it might just be me. Arrangement-wise, I feel like the mix drags on a bit, and it could use some down time in the middle of the song for some sonic variety. You did it in your Midna's Lament mix with the saxophone section, which I thought worked well.

Thanks! There's a LOTTT of stuff going on at the high end, so I'd definitely believe it if someone told me I possibly went overboard trying to tame that beast. I feel you about the variety, having heard mixed things about it. Balls-to-the-wall types love it while with others it might feel a bit stale. I think Midna definitely is a bit more on the accessible side of things.

I'll mostly echo the sentiment above: awesome technique, and a really good, powerful arrangement. :) I would have loved some more variation though (at least regarding chord progressions), and as such I thought that last go at 4:10 was kinda unnecessary and made the piece overstays its welcome. It may also be the Schala melody on keyboard that gets a bit tiring after a while. But all in all, I loved it.

Thanks! I was kinda going for a Born of Osiris approach, with it just repeating in the background while adjusting the volumes. I found that if I took the keys out during a section it felt super empty. This could be that I'm just a sucker for wall-of-sound approaches, which I think I need to get over eventually. Thanks for the feedback!

  2. This is fantastic. Absolutely great. If I was forced to make a complaint, it would be that occasionally the leads sound just a bit buried, and sometimes the drums feel like they stand out too much. Still, this is awesome. I have more words for "really good" if necessary.

Thanks! Yeah, the leads being buried sometimes was partially intentional, but I think i downplayed them a bit too much in the mix. I think mostly my snare is a bit too present as well, so I feel you there.

  3. Oooooh, just the right choice of tones and effects. And that PRS of yours is a beauty. Fancy fingerwork. The sax and the guitars blend far better than I would have expected.

I am seriously digging this arrangement.

Thanks so much! Mixing the sax into a heavy-ish post-metal type part was a trip; I used M83 and TesseracT as a reference for levels, boosted the high end quite a bit, and applied a LOT of reverb and delay to give it a spacey effect without completely killing it. Glad you like it!

  4. I'm not sure about this, but I think in the section after 5:49 the guitar with delay playing trills and the lead have some conflicting frequencies.

Nah I think you're right, after I released the video I was listening back and around 5:39 I heard a little bit of dissonance with the tremolo notes, tapping leads, and the tail end of the solo. There wasn't much I could do about it at that point, but I'm honestly not too upset about it. If anyone asks I'll probably claim it was intentional ;)

    Glad you liked it!

  5. Great to see another Mass Effect cover/remix!! All in all, I really like your cover. I have one problem with your cover: when all of the guitars are together, the lead is buried. Bringing the lead out more would really help.

Thanks! Yeah, there are about 8 guitars playing on top of each other at this track's densest, and it becomes a bit of a headache with the mix and trying to balance the leads. I'll keep this in mind for next time, though.

  6. I usually do progressive metal / rock stuff, but I really wanted to take it easy on this one and try to do the original justice with some slow build, crescendo, ambiance, etc. I experimented a lot with layering all kinds of tracks and effects to achieve a unique tone, and a buddy of mine contributed bass.

This track is part of an album to raise money for charity.

  7. Hey, great playing !

Have you tried Amplitube (or any other amp sim) instead of podfarm? I dont know, I think the tones with podfarm are a little thin, or maybe its me.

I haven't, admittedly. I'm personally pretty happy with my tones as they are now given the limitations of the interface and software, but they're definitely not professional-grade. I'd like to get an Axe-FX or Pod HD Pro in the future when I have millions of dollars to throw around.

And thanks for the heads up about those comps!

  8. Hi all, this'll be my first post.

I arrange progressive rock / metal covers of VGM tracks and post them to my YouTube channel (original, I know). I've had quite a bit of positive feedback in the past, and have had people suggest a few times that I share some of my work here.

This is my latest cover, which is of the excellent SSB4 Main Menu theme. I'd like to think that this is my strongest mix to date, I took quite a while revamping my tones and trying to make everything sound as professional as possible with my limited production experience.

Any and all critique or comments are absolutely appreciated; I hope you enjoy:
