  1. You have to figure out if your interface has ASIO support, if so, you need to properly install the drivers and set up your Ableton Live to recognize and use those drivers. If you don't have ASIO drivers in the interface, try using something called ASIO4ALL, though I personally dislike that solution.. it may work for you.

  2. DX7 :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Hy Bound is an idiot, and bluefox once again proves he is completely useless. But, in many cases, the price of a synth is directly linked to its quality. Ofcourse, there are a few "Les Pauls" of the synthesizer world (meaning they cost about 300% more than they're actually worth), but for the most part, you get what you pay for.

  3. Well, as much as I know I won't be able to defend myself from a Snappleattack, I am quite a new mixer, so I am very prone to mistakes.

But, if I've got more arrangement problems than production problems then that's okay, as I really haven't made many changes arrangement-wise from the first couple versions aside from changing my ridiculous lead instrument (I like it  ), it's all been about making the bad arranging and mixing sound cohesive while going to worse. So, lemme know how or why it didn't really happen (if you can nail any good examples/reasons from just listening); I'd like to improve on that front as well.

As for arranging, I get what you mean for the majority of what you're saying but one thing stands out - how are my harmonies wrong? If you care enough to try to point out specific examples of my bad harmonies I'd appreciate the chance to figure out why. Like you said, I do lack musical knowledge; aside from having played the bagpipes for seven years I haven't played another instrument from an age (piano at age five) I can remember but I am trying to expand my musical knowledge both through practice (here) and classes (which I can't take until next quarter :|). I can just imagine you saying you don't want to hear my life story, but that's okay; I'm down with the soul-crushing as long as I can get some good advice from it.

EDIT: Getting some good feedback via IRC about certain things, especially the harmonies, so I'm getting a feel for what you might have meant. Still feel free to let me know what you had a problem with though, in case it was something different that I could fix.

Your harmonies are offkey. Unless you're going for dissonance which I can tell you're not because the rest of the composition doesn't go in that direction.

  4. After 14 tries this is the best you got? WEll, the mixing in this is REALLY bad, but that's the least of it. The orchestral style intro needs more articulation and better composition. Once the song comes in though, it goes from bad to worse. Almost all of your harmonies are wrong, that lead instrument you chose sounds ridiculous, and the arrangement itself is seriously lacking.

What you need to do (besides learning some music and training your ears) is to learn about proper arrangement techniques. You seem to have no idea what song structure is. Most of the work was done for you by the original composers, you can't just stick the songs back to back and hope it'll sound cohesive because you used the samples for all the songs. The key is to map the song out before you start arranging, listen to it in your head, and then try to translate that into a plan, on paper or notepad or whatever, just write it out in terms you can familiarize yourself with. Then go back, listen to each song, and try to match sections from each song, whether it be by similar rhythmic patters, same key, or anything that would glue section A from song 1 to section C from song 2 or whatever. MIX the material together in a good way, and use time and silence more effectively! All that time and silence do in your song now is prepare me for a bad transition into a totally new song, this is not how one song should be.

  5. Bluefox, shut up :(

Anyway, yeah it is indeed a legit guitar made by Epiphone, I found one on the street in a pile of garbage a couple years ago, no amount of cleaning would get rid of the filth....

Anyway, the sparkly silver finish more typical, I've also seen a very nice looking natural finish version (norg had one which he sold to housethegrate).

  6. If it weren't fair play to ask for people to rate your own music highly, you'd think they wouldn't phrase things like:

"Now’s the time to make sure your fans are doing all they can for you. To help facilitate the possibility of you moving up a notch..."

"The best way for you to earn the honor is to tell ALL your friends and devoted fans who are not on OurStage to register for OurStage ASAP and join your fan club."

And as they said, you really *can't* cheat in this system because all the rounds are randomized. You are forced to vote on all the songs presented to you - not just on those of zircon, sgx, or myself. I think you're reading too much into it.

All I'm saying is, where's the personal growth factor when your friends are the ones boosting your ratings? I know that my buddies like my music, but the point is that I was strangers to vote for it, honestly.

  7. I can understand why you might come to that conclusion not being familiar with the site, but that actually couldn't be further from the truth. (And we have been encouraging people to get recognized with their own music as well. Perhaps you didn't read the first post thoroughly.) OurStage is all about fan support. In fact, they send competitors frequent emails encouraging them to get new fans to sign up and vote. Here are some samples from those emails:

    ------

"A little encouragement can go a long way Now’s the time to make sure your fans are doing all they can for you. To help facilitate the possibility of you moving up a notch, we’ve included a sample email you can send out to your fans, or post as a bulletin, or have tattooed on your forehead. However you use it, it’s there to encourage your fans to register for OurStage if they haven’t already done so, and to come back and vote again for next round."

    ------

"Most of you, I suspect, have fans who are not connected to you by DNA or marriage. As much as you depend on your fans, we here at OurStage also need their involvement to see us on to bigger pastures. So here's a special opportunity, offered exclusively to our esteemed quarter finalists. Between now and the end of March, any artist who adds 20 or more new fans into your fan club will be automatically submitted to AOL for promotional consideration (musicians only), not to mention a passage in our beloved newsletters and other promotional announcements.

The best way for you to earn the honor is to tell ALL your friends and devoted fans who are not on OurStage to register for OurStage ASAP and join your fan club."

    ------

"Notify everyone you’re going for one of these performance slots, ask them to join the fun and judge all content fairly. Our system randomizes all entries, meaning that fans have no way of knowing or controlling who they vote for. This keeps OurStage from becoming a crappy little monthly dustup, instead of the film & music discovery venue that it is, where great artists get a stab at fame without having to kiss unfamiliar buttocks or sleep with people they’d rather just do deals with."

    ------

Etc etc. I think you get the idea. ^-^ Thanks for your support, everyone!

So you're telling me that the people you invite are voting for you purely based on the content of your music and are not at all biased? I wouldn't believe that if you paid me to. I mean, I don't care how you get your votes, but for me personally, I'd feel very wrong asking my friends to vote for me. Just because the site encourages fair play doesn't mean there's any way to enforce it.

  8. I have tried plugging into my amp then running a line out from there into the sound card. There is more noise doing it that way, but I can definitely adjust the sound level to come in higher (-10dB instead of -24dB) if that's an advantage?

I'll check out the GTR3 interface SM thanks. I can't tell, does that thing have a digital output or an analog output and does it have a preamp? (it says on the site it has a "transparent preamp")

    thanks!

The amp's line out is a bad idea. Unless you have a brand new state of the art amp that for some reason has a line out (most high grade amps do not), then you're doomed to a very high noise level.

As for the PRS interface, I don't really have the details on it, I can't find a spec sheet anywhere. I'm thinking of getting one myself because I just ditched my old pre-amp.

  9. I tried to look up the word impedance, but couldn't find an easy answer anywhere. I've got my guitar plugged directly to my external sound card with a standard jack, does that mean that I don't have to worry about a reduction of my sound quality?

I'm not gonna get technical, but impedance is the voltage to current relationship, and it's pretty logical to assume that if your source and destination are of different impedance, there will be some sacrifice. In your situation, you do have to worry about sound quality unless your external sound card has a mic preamp built in, that would convert the signal to be used properly in the digital domain. If your sound card only has "Line Input" or something similar, then you are getting a reduction in sound quality. So either get yourself a good preamp/DI box, or if your sound card has it, use the Mic Input.

  10. Yeah, you really need to get your hands on a DI box to lower the impedance, this will reduce the noise level and give you optimal tone out of your guitar.

Something REALLY cool that was recently released is the Waves GTR3 interface. It's relatively cheap (about $75-90 if you shop around) and is specifically made to convert your guitar signal into a low impedance signal in the same way an amp would. And it's made specifically for amp modeling software, I recommend you check it out.

  11. Constructive criticism is for MUSIC, not random bullshit thrown together by someone who has no idea what music is. There's nothing elitist about having standards, this is a site where anyone can join and post whatever they want, not everyone has what it takes to be considered a musician. People these days forget that it takes a certain level of talent to do something well and get praised for it.

  12. hahah, you called the original primitive? how stupid a comment...

    listening....

Hahaha, that's even funnier is listening to your version in comparison. So far there's nothing but filtered bullshit and badly mixed beats. I have no idea how this song got 4 pages of replies, but I can assure you, this sucks. Here's why:

    - No sense of anything musical.

    - Rhythmic songs are great, when they keep an interesting rhythm.

    - Extremely over compressed, it hurts to listen to.

    - Lacks composition.

    - Lacks melodic structure.

    - Lacks style and originality.

    - Simply sounds bad.

    - Too bland and simple, there's nothing interesting going on.

    - SOUNDS BAD! :(

You fail. This is hands down the WORST Killer Instinct remix I've ever heard, you should be ashamed.

Also, do some research before you post bullshit, because that "cover" you posted is the original song from the arcade version, combined with the character select theme that was used on the "Killer Cuts" CD that came with the SNES version. The SNES music is badly ported from the arcade (though still sounds better than yours).

  13. Why don't you stop pretending like I don't? The only thing I've faulted on in this thread so far was the licensing issue with the FR-derived trems; and that was a legal issue, not a technical one.

The point is that you just copy and paste text without knowing anything about it. And half the time you paste shit that nobody cares about. I don't know if you're trying to appear intelligent or what, but it's failing.

  14. Bluefox, once again, stop pretending like you know what you're talking about...

Anyway, I use Dunlop Jazz III picks primarily, I also use Dunlop Tortex of varying thickness once in a while, and my favourite pick would have to be my Cymbolic Brass pick (made of brass...). The brass pick is really interesting and gives a great sounding character to anything you play with it, it's hard to get used to at first, but I really like it now.
