  1. Another excellent contribution from goat. It feels somewhat slow with the intro, as things are kind of dry until around 2:30, and not much can be said for the quality of the instruments, but when that guitar hits, it gets pretty damn juicy. And from 4:27 on, it's just plain awesome. My only real criticisms would be the sound quality and about a minute of superfluous intro. Otherwise, it's gold. Thanks again, goat.

  2. Right off the bat, this remix is striking and catchy. I like the aggressive take on the water theme, it's well suited to piano, and generally well executed. The sound quality is just a wee bit suspect at times, but it hardly detracts from the piece as a whole. Excellent work as usual, Bladiator.

Please do try not to hit the bottle too hard, save that brain for more remixing!

  3. I had mixed feelings about this mix at first, but it's grown on me since. First, the guitar work is SWEET. Second, my main gripe, which was the lyrics (a bold choice for OCR), are actually somewhat well done in that they are just cliche enough to fit, but not so cliche that they put you to sleep. I've grown to appreciate the corniness, and instead just love to listen to this well-executed rock ballad. Good stuff.

  4. From the second the theme kicked in on this ReMix, I knew I was going to enjoy it. The swamp theme has always been a very emotive piece, and... wait, what's this? COMPLETELY DIFFERENT DIRECTION. An interesting theme on the Topsail theme, with a nice spin on the original melody. This piece has some excellent flow to it, and I enjoy the wind instruments, which go nicely with the theme of the piece. Overall, a strong first showing, and the commitment to the work really shows throughout. It's nice to see something different done with the DKC2 source material; no offense to Prot, but it's nice to see the veritable monopoly being broken up. Well done.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out the irony in this pieces resemblences to Protricity's FFV mix, when DKC2 is undisputably Proticity's turf. I'll shut up now.

  5. Hm. This remix warrants me logging into my account for the first time in at least 4 months. I've been downloading obsessively from Overclocked lately (bear with me, I'm still on 56K), and I went song by song through Chrono Trigger. Coming across this piece, I must say, this is one of the most adeptly exectued remixes I have downloaded (out of 555, to be precise). Listening to this song, you can really see and appreciate all the orchestration (no pun intended) that went into this remix. I could rant all day about how zircon and Unknown have taken fairly limited source material and turned it into a Orchestral-Techno epic, but what I really love about this piece is the subtlety. There is so much nuance and so many careful adjustments scattered about this remix, and so it succeeds in keeping this piece from ever becoming repetitive. One instance that occurs to me is the development of a more atonal sound, just before the techno beat kicks in. The techno shatters through, and I'm thinking, okay, that's it for the orchestral, but no more than 10 seconds later, it comes powering back in a perfect fusion with the electronic elements. Beautiful, simply beautiful. The one suggestion that occurs to me is the piano at the beginning sounding a bit too electronic. Humanizing it a bit, or most preferably getting a recording of some real piano would be some very sweet icing on an already outstanding cake. But that may just be me, I've been listening to too much kLuTz and Dhsu recently. Overall, great, great work that merits recognition, and, with any luck, will stand as an example for what remixers can aspire to achieve in this largely undeveloped genre.

  6. So good, or no good?

    SO GOOD!

What can I say, I absolutely love this track. It's dancy, it's probably the single best trance track I've heard on OCR, and it jumped right on to my FF playlist. I can't get enough of it, and it's just one of those tracks that you can't help but dance to. Simple wonderful. And I agree with TCK, the section from 2:43 to 3:10 makes this track. That effect where the note start to flow together (sorry, don't know my music theory) is awesome! For me, there is no downside to this song, unless you detest trance. A must download. Excellent Work, FFmusic Dj.

  7. This is one of those songs where from the first second I heard it, I knew I was going to like it, and it just keeps getting better. This is fun, funky, and makes me want to get up and dance. And that's no lie. Rayza is quickly moving up the charts as one of my favorite Remixers as I discover more of his work. I loved Guile (R.A.H. Mix), I loved Green Hill ('95 Euroclub Mix), I loved Ice Cap (Frozen Knuckles) Remix, and I love this. Another job well done by Rayza.

  8. Indeed. Great guitar work but it's just kinda there for a long time. This would prolly be great music to smoke out to. =P

my thoughts exactly....it's laid back, it's chill, but underneith it's complex enough to ponder over. good stuff.

I'll point out that the track is done by SAiNT 420. I'll just leave it at that.

Anyway, I like this mix. It was one of the first songs I downloaded on OCR, and I've yet to hear anything that resembles it in the least. You won't come across a mix like this too often... and I think that's too bad. I agree that the soloing begins to get tedious after a while, but I love the mixing of different guitars, and smooth flow of the song. It's relaxing, and satisfying. Thumbs up.

  9. Upon further review, I have deemed that this piece is still amazing, and easily in the top five of the 200 songs I have downloaded from this site. And ater listening to it, oh... 40 times now, I've figured out why this is such a wonderful piece. It's powerfully evocative, an emotional intensifier. If I'm happy when I listen to this song, life is good. If I'm down when I listen to this song, it will make me cry. It's hard to do that. Really hard. But McVaffe continues to make it look easy. Hats off to McVaffe.

  10. dunno if anyone mentioned this one already, but the hardest boss i ever found was the angel girl in the bottom lvl of the trial dungeons in Star Ocean:2, still havent killed her............

If I recall correctly, when you beat her, she drops a horn item, and if you play it on the overworld map, an even harder boss appears to fight you. Have fun with that.

The actual final boss of Star Ocean 2 wasn't too hard, though. My party of Claude, Rena, Ashton, and Dias, all equipped with bunny shoes, pretty much charged him, and threw all their killer moves on him at once. Mirror Slice was hitting so fast, the boss couldn't even move, much less get a spell off. He didn't last 10 seconds, haha. Good times.

  11. How have I not reviewed this song yet...? I could have sworn I did, but I've been flinging praise around the boards for some time now, so I might as well make it official.

Checking my Windows Media Player... I have now listened to Waltz of Pain 89 times. That just barely moves it into first place for the most commonly listened to song on my computer. This also does not count the countless number of times I have listened to it on CD, as it has a spot on 2 of my 3 OCR mix CDs. Let me explain why.

This song is amazing. This is the second song I downloaded from OCR, and to this day remains one of my favorites. The subtlety and skill with which this piece is played, combined with the masterful arrangement, makes this an instant classic in my book. It stands alone as a piece completely unique from everything else I've downloaded from OCR. It's a wonderful interpretation of the Sad Song from Super Mario RPG, and really evokes the pity and sorrow you feel for Mallow. And then, at 1'20", the more solid chords and volume build express the frustration. I can still picture Croc stealing Mallow's wallet, and the ensuing chase. It's all there in the song, mingling with some excellent piano playing. If I had to give this an award, I would probably give it an award for being the "Most Human Remix." You can see all the effort that went into making this piece, and how much it payed off.

I want to see more remixes like this. Excellent work.

  12. In my opinion, both remixes are fantastic in their separate ways. Why must we always draw contrasts and compare two completely different mixes? Personally, I prefer McVaffe's piece, but again, that's my opinion.

I agree wholeheartedly. They are two distinctly different remixes, by two different remixers with two different styles, and just because they are from the same game does not mean they have to compete. DD and McV (I smell a sitcom...) are both great remixers. Actually, I don't think "great" does them justice. They respectively maintain a firm foothold in my 5 favorite songs. I remember being blown away by Braving Tal Tal Heights, and I remember several mixes by McVaffe making my jaw drop. So, they're both great. Can't we agree to that? Godly as they may seem, there are people behind these names, that put a hell of a lot of effort into doing this. Between the two of them, they have 57 remixes. I think that demands some respect.

Anyhow, with the rant aside, I'll move on to my review. I've read all the way through this thread, and listened to the song 5 times now... and I'm not feeling anything. I can hear the blending, and I can hear the seamless transistions, but the song just isn't working for me. I can't really place what it is, though. Maybe the style just doesn't resonate well with me, but I have to shrug with this one. I guess it's just me, though, since it seems like most of the rest of the community is already erecting a shrine to Majeure.

I'll also just put out there that I personally prefer McVaffe's "The Darkness and the Light." I listened to it once, and kind of phased out, and said, wait a minute, let me listen to that again. So I did. And then I liked it. So I listened to it 19 more times. Probably one of my all-time OCR favorites already. But it's all about personal appeal. It doesn't "Kick DD's mix's ass." This is a community, not a colleseum.

    So, in review:

    Disco Dan= Excellent

    McVaffe= Excellent

    Triforce Majeure= Good song

The Darkness and the Light= Doesn't matter, since it's not a contest

    That is all.

  13. I'm going to do this review as a stream of conciousness as I listen to the song.

    0'00"- "Huh?"

    0'26"- "This is different..."

0'57"- "Whoa, this is different." *begins bobbing head*

    1'47"- "Nice tempo variation."

2'42"- "Damn, that's some fine piano."

3'51"- "Oh man, this is amazing."

4'41"- "He's done it again, god damn it."

5'42"- "No. It can't be over. No..."

5'54"- "My life suddenly feels without meaning."

Another amazing arrangement by McVaffe. The blending of wind and piano is seamless and soothing, and the percussion draws you in quickly. There's some nice tempo mixing, and this piece is layered in spades. I really don't know how he can do such amazing work. And he never fails to deliver. McVaffe is easily my favorite remixer, and this is why. Every so often, I'll download a song and immediately I know that it has to go on my playlists. This is one of them. Thank you for being so brilliant, McVaffe.

  14. The last two battles of Shining Force III, Scenario 1. They are fought in direct succession. If the golem doesn't kill you, Arrawant will. I spent a good 8 hours leveling up my characters high enough to barely survive both battles. And I didn't even try shorting out the golem. I'll note that Arrawant had 600 HP, and the Golem has somewhere close to 3000. And you maybe deal him 1 damage a hit. Now that's a boss.

NOTE: This is when I did not know about those punk mercenaries in the bar in Malorie. I wasn't supposed to be able to beat Arrawant, but I did, god damn it.

  15. The first time I listened to this track, I didn't really like it. But I gave it a second chance, and now it's one of my favorite remixes on the site. The balalaika is good, although a bit weak at the beginning, and it picks up nicely once the tecno comes in. And the solos are awesome. The sheer creativity behind this earns it a really high grade. Good work, djp!

  16. For me, it would have to be Culex in Super Mario RPG, with no Rock Candies! That took for-freaking-ever! It would have been impossible if I didn't have the lazy shell on peach. That's the only reason I even survived the first round. I almost ran out of royal syrups, too... gah, that boss sucked. It was worth it though. I could start breathing again after I beat him.

Also, Darth Vader from Super Empire Strikes back for the SNES. I've never even scratched him without the debug code... mmmm... infinite themal detonators...

The Emporer in Super Return of the Jedi can be pretty bastardly, too...
