  1. No you're actually wrong, the Wii U can actually split audio through it's AV analog port out to an external source, and output video through HDMI. It wasn't possible at first, but with the latest firmware update to 4.0, you can now do so. Nintendo mentions it on their support website and even has instructions. Looks like it's your lucky day!

  2. i just wanted to chime in and correct something that everyone seems to be confusing. Lots of you are saying that if you don't play video games for awhile, you don't get withdrawal symptoms, such as you would if you were "addicted" to alcohol. But you're not using the medically correct terminology. Having withdrawal symptoms is known as "dependence" not addiction. Hence someone with alcohol tolerance/withdrawal has a diagnosis of alcohol dependence (303.90 in the DSM). The word addiction isn't really used in medicine because of the public's confusion with it. And what the AMA is debating isn't just your typical "billy played WOW for 5 hours last night", it's more of your "billy hasn't eaten in 3 days and is getting dehydrated, has electrolyte imbalances, and is suffering an acute delirious episode secondary to a 5 day WOW binge. As for making money off drugs, my guess is SSRI's would be used to treat this problem, and for those of you who don't know, SSRI's like Prozac are now generic and among the cheapest drugs out there, so it's not really a matter of money for the pharm companies anymore. They could probably care less. Video game impotence however, that would probably interest them a lot more.

  3. Yeah, pretty much when you get to a certain skill level in tetris attack, the online gaming part becomes flawed. That's because with the new controls, it's super easy to do 15+ chains and any decent player can survive for ages as long as they conserve pieces and continue to resend back garbage blocks. Most people including the japanese are playing on normal mode online, which is way too slow. Also I've noticed some people using a technique I have named cloaking. I.e., they'll play badly the first couple seconds. This makes the other person think they've got the game in the bag and they then proceed to play less cautiously, bringing out the big guns and chains early. Then they amp up their game and for some reason this creates a psychological advantage I've noticed, which is important when so much of online battling requires endurance rather than skill.

  4. Anyone who's followed the current trend in Korea knows that video game/online addiction is a real and sometimes serious problem. If this were to be implemented in the DSM-V (coming out in 2012), which will be the next version of the psychiatrist's big book of diagnosable disorders, they would most certainly put a clause such as _causes social and occupational impairment in functioning_ which they always add as an addendum. As a future psychiatrist, I will be treating this as addiction is my specialty! :)

  5. I don't like it.

    Here's why:

NES games and Genesis games tend to have very different styles synth instruments, mostly as a result of the NES and Genesis having sound chips that operate in quite different manners.

In this piece, the Genesis chip isn't producing any of it's trademark sounds. Rather, it's being made to reproduce NES and SNES trademark sounds.

This is like making a xylophone sound like a piano. It may be possible, and it would be a great technical accomplishment.

    But it's a waste of a xylophone.

I would actually go a step further and put forth that this composition does not really make good use of the NES as an instrument.

It sounds like it was written and arranged for live instruments, and then transposed to NES & Genesis chip synths. This prevents it from really taking advantage of the charms of the retro sounds those chips produce. Additionally, the source tune is a bit too cacaphonous to allow proper emphasis of the dueling consoles concept (it becomes difficult to tell NES from Genesis at many points, and it's even harder to tell when they stop dueling and start cooperating).

The overall effect is that the chiptune sounds have been reduced to a gimmick, which pales in comparison to the original SPC.

I would really like to hear Shnabubula make a second offering of the NES + Genesis "dueling consoles", with a less frenetic source tune, and some of the signature Genesis type sounds in mind (strengths seem to be sustained tones, rapid arpeggios, and solid percussion). I think that could be truly great.

Edit: I fully expect to be lynched for this opinion, but it is my honest opinion, and I have tried to make it as constructive as possible.

haha, this song is awesome and this review is probably the funniest thing I've ever read. This has got to be some sort of joke I hope, because it makes absolutely no sense. Could you please answer these questions to the best of your ability in order to defend your review? I'm just so curious as to what you're thinking, because I've never read a review that made me laugh so hard.

#1 what is a "trademark" genesis sound?

#2 why does making a xylophone sound like a piano 'waste' the xylophone??

#3 The song WAS written and arranged for live instruments and transposed to the NES (hence the dueling banjos idea). Why do you think this detracts from the 'charm' of the NES sounds? How would the NES sounds be different if the source material was all original and not 'transposed'? Please give a detailed description of the aesthetic changes in both musical and descriptive terminology.

#4 How does a source tune being cacophonous preclude proper use of the NES and genesis synth sounds from being properly emphasized? Why do you think the source tune is cacophonous in the first place?? (I assume you meant cacophonous. You spelled it wrong in your review).

Please answer these questions as I'm utterly confused as to what your review is trying to say. Were you up at 2 in the morning writing this on LSD or what? :)

  6. Blah repeat what the previous 19 entries said, I kinda agree with all that. But what struck me most is that this song is almost an exact replica of Starblast's chrono trigger remix "Black Wind Rising." I.e., they both start out crappy with terrible samples and the impression that the mix will blow, then comes a radical change and the song gets good. Except that star does this to the nth degree while this woodman mix never quite does the same kind of quirky and amazing theme variations that we hear from star. So to summarize, this mix is like a Roman Venus de Milo to me.

  7. On the other hand, implying that the people involved are not "real instrumentalists" and that we have no sense of pitch is not a criticism of the MIX, it's a criticism of US, and an obviously untrue one.

Zircon I think you totally misunderstood the context in which I was using the term 'real' instrumentalist. I meant that to mean people who 'really' play instruments who are familiar with concepts like musical pitch and have a discerning ear with absolutely no intent of implying that you guys aren't real musicians or something of that sort. It wasn't a jab at any of you and should have been read without any notion of being sardonic. Sorry you chose to view it that way. And you know, I was trying to temper my negativity by starting out with giving Pixie a compliment. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just giving an honest opinion which should not have to be constructive in any way. Trying to control others' speech especially when it is regarding you personally amounts to dictatorship.

  8. To us real instrumentalists who can tell pitch with precision, it's just plainly out of tune, without a doubt.

Ugh. Fuck you. I SAID I knew it wasn't perfect, given the circumstances. Let's hear some of your performances, how about that? I'm sure you're a superb musician.

Wow let me give you one more piece of advice. Swearing at your critics isn't a sign of maturity. And I was concertmaster of my high school orchestra and second chair of my college symphony orchestra btw.

  9. I'd have to agree with some of the more negative commentary. I was totally hyped up to get a new remix featuring Pixie's vocal talents (whose 'Prayer' Zelda remix I've pretty much listened to for over a year without getting tired of) But I was aghast when I heard the vocals come on. To us real instrumentalists who can tell pitch with precision, it's just plainly out of tune, without a doubt. I was just surprised you'd let something like that slip by without fixing it first. Getting a remix out one or two days earlier isn't worth it when it's going to be listened to for many years to come. The rest of the song besides the singing is also mediocre at best, I really don't know what the fuss is about. Don't release a work or do a performance unless you're at your best. You people at Peabody Conservatory should know that more than anyone right?

  10. Arek and whoever else may step in to on my defense: thanks, but don't worry about it. If he doesn't like the song, he doesn't like the song; you're never going to convince him otherwise. I'd rather see actual reviews than a continued debate over one particular comment.

Yes I agree..if you'll notice this is like the 10000th time I've reviewed a song I did not like, and every time, a rallying defensive cry comes along trying to blast me away for being so mean/hypocritical/a jerk etc etc...well it only makes me more adamant that people need to dole out their negative reactions as well as their positive ones. So don't bother cause #1 you'll NEVER win, (every insult is hilarious and amusing to me and makes me want to piss you off more) and #2, people like Mr. Taucer can appreciate a bad review and fit it into the bigger picture.

  11. ??? Am I missing something? I read all of the mostly positive reviews for this remix and so had great expectations for it....which were not met. To me this is just another ordinary run of the mill remix. Nothing stands out and grabs my attention, and there's nothing memorable to it either. I played this in the background while doing some work and hadn't even noticed it had started and finished. It made that little of an impression the first time around. But hey that's just me... 4/10

  12. Good stuff, except for the horrendously, ludicrously, absurdly, horrifically, ridiculously, gimme-a-break-are-you-kidding-me intro which is the most unoriginal trance rehash crap which generally speaks for 99% of the genre and made me want to GOL (gag out loud). But with this remix, blind definately stands out in my mind. Seems like he's surpassed Oakenfold, although to most people thats not saying much ;P

Hence "Club Mix" aka for the djs to mix into a set. its necessary. Check out my snowbound remix from earthbound for a nice intro to a dance song. You have to understand the genre...

Next time I submit to OC it will be "OC Edit", like a radio edit, and vgmix will have the full on mix. It fits the guidelines better i guess.

Don't sweat it, man. Magi_tekk doesn't know the standards, djp and the judges do. And we gave you 4YES. This is an amazing piece by our standards and by the standards of dance/trance music.

What's with the diss Mr. Fancy Pants Judge. Just because we have different standards doesn't mean I have to subscribe to yours. Maybe blind can handle some heftier criticism unlike say...you??

Go get a cheese steak at Geno's (or better yet Jim's) and leave me alone.

  13. 14. This mix doesn't impress me at all, nor do I like it. My problem is with the violin samples. They sound fake as hell! Most likely because I played the violin for 16 years and know how it should sound. But seriously, listening to this song, it almost felt like it was 1993 and I was listening to a prepackaged midi on the media player for windows 3.1. I don't know, maybe I just expect too much from DJ P, but this mix is just a meager 4/10 in my mind.
