Jedihillis
Ok here are the files I've been working on recently. Just a few notes: I was originally going to make a soundtrack entirely 8 bit. As it turned out, only two of the songs are actually 8 bit; the Hero theme and the Town theme. The other two utilize a more "complete" composition and tools ect. But I'm sure you'll get it as it goes along. Also, I'm not really good at mixing yet and am still learning how to engineer that stuff. I've found that it sounds best on a decent set of headphones so I'd say try it that way first. Also there are a few things missing like fade outs and whatnot. Still working on that stuff. Let me know what you think! Main Hero Theme: (Finished) http://www.mediafire.com/?rwykfq48mezsqs9 Town Theme: (Mostly done) http://www.mediafire.com/?vuwu4o7eu8i1y1x Title Screen: (Finished) http://www.mediafire.com/?ad476cbhbuxbae3 Boss Battle: (Mostly Done) http://www.mediafire.com/?cxedn07s1m1t2i7
erineclipse
Hero Theme: Very good theme but overall muddy mix. Needs EQ work. There should be another note after 0:35. Also kind of repetitive. Town theme: In aif format, didn't download Title Screen: Beautiful, started sad at first but became more energetic. Piano was muffled though and overall it was muddy. Boss Battle: Really good and crisp, until the 2nd drum part, which muddied it up, maybe add compression to the drums. Add eq to synth too. (The goal of a mix is to have it sound good on all playback devices, so telling us to wear a certain kind of headset isn't going to fly
Jedihillis
Sorry that message was originally for another guy who i sent these files to. I forgot to proof read. But yeah, I definitely need EQ help. I just bought Logic Express recently and am still learning how to get things to sound even across all listening platforms. One thing I can't seem to figure out is how to get rid of that "muddyness" you mentioned. Does it just take a lot of trial and error or are there certain things that everyone should know how to use? Thanks for any advice! Appreciate the feedback

A chart like this might help you, but generally the best way is to do it by ear. especially when using unusual sounding instruments. You typically want to boost it high enough right before it starts to clip. It's also important to remove frequencies that are barely audible, in order to allow room for other instruments which use that range of frequencies. I use Fruity parametric EQ 2, which is convenient because it shows what frequencies are emphasized by the instrument and it shows in Hz the position of each knob. Here is another guide for drum compression. http://howrealisdat.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2009-04-01T00%3A00%3A00-07%3A00&updated-max=2009-05-01T00%3A00%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=6 I use soundfont drums, so one setting for all my drums works fine for me (I use FL compressor "Drums" preset.) You problably don't have that plugin though, so you'll have to play around with the settings and see what sounds good. Panning may also help too. If you want something to get noticed, or your song is becoming dull, remember to pan. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5752236/sonically_speaking_vol_4_the_art_of_pg3.html?cat=
