Mint
I booted my circa 1999 desktop the other day and I could not get into Windows XP. The monitor just went into "sleep" mode as if there was no video input. So I tried Safe Mode and found that the colors were somewhat off and that my mouse cursor would "track" and "make new colors", basically smearing everything on the screen. I was able to take a screenshot and found that the error was on the screenshot, so the problem must be my video card. However I have tried all the regular solutions including changing my video card settings in safe mode and restoring my windows state but I still can't get into Windows XP. I'm not sure what the problem is considering that most of the video applications in Safe Mode work fine albeit the "smearing" that comes when I move my mouse. Movies and video files work fine, so I don't think my video card is 'dead'. What's my next step?
Smoke
Swapping out videocards, actually. Artifacting can have several causes, and it doesn't have to happen in everything. If reinstalling your videocard drivers gives no results, your only real option is getting a new card and putting it in.
