Arranging the music of one song...

"Opening Stage"

Primary Game: Mega Man X3 (Capcom , 1995, SNES), music by Kinuyo Yamashita

I'm proud to formally announce the addition of our newest judge, WillRock!!

Mr. Harby has already joined the panel & started voting, and so far his productivity as a judge is mirroring that of his ReMixing. Since May of 2009, Will's been rocking OCR non-stop, crafting mix upon mix, branching out, developing, and just making a huge contribution to the fan VGM arrangement scene in general. I'm glad to see him join the panel and am confident that he, along with all our staff - new & old - will continue working to improve this website and community. So give him some mad props - he's certainly earned them! For this track off Maverick Rising, he writes:

"Some time ago, Gecko Yamori linked a Genesis version of the MMX3 Opening theme on the OCR forums. As it turns out, this piece of music was very influential on me at the time, it pretty much fueled my interest with making Genesis-style tracks, and inspired me to make this. Excited, I looked up the original - and what I got was the tinniest sounding source I've probably ever heard. I was disappointed to say the least, as it paled in comparison to Gecko's version. So I did my own remix of this theme, using Gecko's as inspiration, which is why this has a Genesis-like quality to it. As far as arrangement goes, this is probably one of my more creative remixes. I'm not spoiling anything, you'll just have to listen to it to find out. ;P"

Unabashedly retro synth rock with more than a couple surprises that I'm not gonna spoil; Nutritious writes:

"Man, this sounds like something that could've been submitted to the site a few years ago (in a good way). It's got that old-school ocr electronic sound. No question what sound is being arranged here at all, as Sir Harby both makes strong melodic connections, but also adds his own soloing and expansions to compliment the material."

Fellow Brit Fishy adds:

"If only you were born in the 60s, you could have been in van halen or some shizz. Shamelessly retro. I don't know whether to vote yes or slap you for that solo."

Opportunity missed - can't slap him now, he's your fellow judge. Let's just say there's indulgent, there's spastic, and then there's SPACESPLOITATION SYNTHMANIA. That's not a real thing, I just made that up, but it feels right. The arrangement here is a bit more playful than some of Will's other joints, and all the other staple qualities - retrophilia, meaty synth solos, and general verve - are present & accounted for. Another great MR track, another great WR track, and a new OCR judge that deserves your congratulations!

This is really the only track that can express the adentureous nature of MR. It just says "This is where the journey begins". The excellent retro atmoshpere is so neat, that this track can easily fit, for example, some old Sonic the Hedgehog game. The amount of energy is just ridiculously high. Great job!

The rest is typical Will. :D

It does sound retro in a good way and that's part of the charm. This ReMix gives off a sort of Genesis/Halen combo that does the theme more justice than it could have ever asked for. Loved the middle genesis organ-sounding bit and that solo was very cool.

This is one of my faves from the album. The synths are so cool (they remind of Van Halen :pretzel:). Solos are fun and the general mood of the song is cool!

This mix is a perfect kickoff to Maverick Rising - it sports tension, and does so with Will's snazzy trademark sound. It builds up throughout, and then it leaves you hanging for what is to come. I love this song, it does its job perfectly!

Congrats on your new status Will! I have to admit, I needed to get used to the synths you used at first, but the track has been in my playlist for quite some time now. You captured the source perfectly and the soloing was delicious. Great stuff!
