Hey guys
I found the CD-ROM of King's Quest VII. Would you recommend playing the games in order, or is it nothing-to-do with the previous games a la Final Fantasy?
VII was actually the first I played, and probably why it's my favourite too. There are related elements among the games, but not so many that it would stop you from enjoying or making any sense of it.

On a side note, anyone know how to get those old DOS games working on an XP Windows machine without having to go into DOS? I don't want to mess up my computer, since I do music on it, but I really want to go back and play the Monkey Islands and Full Throttle, DotT, and Grim Fandango.
You shouldn't really have a problem with Grim Fandango considering it was a Windows game (just run it in Compatibility mode if you have to), but for any other old adventure games, ScummVM should have you covered. It's been ported a fair bit too, so even now you could even play these on your wii if you wanted to:

This guy is one of the best bootleggers around and I highly recommend everyone check out some of his stuff.
I'll be sure to download this as soon as I get the opportunity this weekend.

Thanks a lot for giving the Wand of Gamelon a go Bundeslang!
I had fun listening to it, and I hope you had fun making it.

Okay, I've updated my post with a link to a higher quality MP3.
I was going to try and update the wiki at thasauce by myself, but the site is timing out for me at the moment.

Feel free to ignore this if it's too obscure for anyone.
Game: Zelda: Wand of Gamelon
Song: Overworld

Comments on the following topics...
Games with Musical Numbers (or just with songs)
Don't forget that the original Sam & Max game had a song too! I can't remember what it was about, but it was sung by that Conroy Bumpas guy.
...and for the trivia of it all, I'd like to throw in that Gabriel Knight 2 (1995) had a few arias in it, as the game involves you discovering and attending a performance of a lost Richard Wagner opera.
Games with Swearing
In those early text adventures you could type the swear words yourself and get some interesting results.
Also, in You Don't Know Jack (1995), if you keep typing "f**k you" as an answer, the host becomes increasingly annoyed to the point where he says it right back at you and exits the whole application.
Someone mentioned the Nintendo Zapper
According to wiki, the first light gun game was the Seeburg Ray-O-Lite (1936), but that might be going a bit too far before what we would classify as a 'video game'.
Breaking the fourth wall
I suspect The Secret of Monkey Island (1990) might've done this, but can't think of a particular example.
First Female Protagonist
Does Ms Pac Man (1982) count? (and what on earth is a dominant ovary?)
-
So are we just naming the games here, or do you want more detail than that?
-
Darn, well that's unfortunately a deal breaker. I'm aware of it's limitations, but I prefer to get most of the work done on the staff as that's how I was taught.
Thanks max97230.

Sorry if this a silly question.
I have only ever used Cakewalk Home Studio 9 in the past, and it's served me well up until now. Yet seeing as I now have money, I've been looking around for other products on the market, and have been considering FL Studio.
What I particularly like about Cakewalk is how I can draw the MIDI notes onto a musical staff, as I'm a bit more on the traditional composing side. Nothing I've read/seen about FL Studio so far though indicates it has such a feature.
Am I mistaken, or is there not much beyond the piano roll?

It's unfortunate that people have such perceptions based on the visual style of games. I suspect that's why Psychonauts didn't do too well.
And another thing that's unfortunate is that the game's been delayed to sometime in 2008 in Australia. Looks like I won't be purchasing any games this Christmas.
(yes, I'm aware of Super Mario Galaxy, but I don't want to get it right away )
-
...and another one done here.

We can all get together on the 24th and vote!

I'm interested! But the few previous times when Melbourne's been mentioned for a meetup, it never seemed to get any further than an idea.
I guess there aren't that many OCR people down here.
-
How the hell was that mix a rip? Do you even know the originals? You clearly don't.
I think he just read the 'Recording: MIDI sequence' bit on the site and assumed it was.
-
I may be able to mirror - probably depends on how much traffic you're expecting through it though.
-
Any Melbourne OCR'ers interested in organising a meetup on that weekend?
Yes...yes I am.
-
Most remixes I find through ocremix or VGmix, so I don't have a great deal to contribute here.
However, a couple of years ago I came across Peddler's Tune's take on the Scumm Bar theme from Escape from Monkey Island:

Of course, I don't see this ever getting submitted or accepted, as it's a medley featuring the scumm bar theme as just the base of it. But still, I think it deserves a little bit of attention.

If it helps at all.

Bah, sydney... too far. Need one in Melbourne.
Well, if you're willing to organise it...
-
Haha! Awesomeness! Makes me wish I had some decent remixing skills to put forward.
But I'm probably not gonna let that stop me from having fun with it regardless. It should be interesting to see what combinations of words people can come up with.
-
Okay, I've read it...and I can't really say it's something that I personally take issue with as I'm not normally interested in higher rated games anyway.
Regardless though, I still think it's important that the medium get the treatment it deserves. Central to this problem seems to be the outdated perception that video games are a kids only pursuit, which you can kinda see in a response someone on another forum got after they sent of a letter to the OFLC:
Due to the concerns of the 'interactive' nature of computer games and the impact on, and potential for harm to, minors, MA15+ is the highest classification. Censorship Ministers are aware of research into game-playing trends in Australia, including findings that indicate support for an R18+ classification for computer games. However, decisions on significant classification policy issues such as this must be agreed unanimously by the Australian, State and Territory Censorship Ministers.I can't help but feel regardless of the information on gaming trends they've been given, that there's still that same kiddy perception among the ministers.

Having spent the past four months job searching in the web design/development industry, I'd like to give a bit of advice if I may.
Commercial experience means a lot more to employers than volunteer work like you're offering here. Ask around with your family/friends and see if they know anyone who needs a website/anything done. Or, you can present yourself to some local small businesses as well, and offer a really competitive price. Once they see how cheaply you're willing to do it for, along with the quality of work already in your portfolio, they should be glad to take you up on your offer.
It'd also be better as well to move a bit out of your comfort zone in terms of content. As you said, you'd prefer to do some stuff with people who share common interests, but it'd probably be better for you in the long run to get experience with a wide variety of clients.
Anyway, good luck with it all
Any VGmusic sequencers here?

They're not incredibly accurate, but I did the operation theme from Trauma Center on the DS, and the Overworld theme from Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon.
